Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a very hardy perennial herb adaptable to most conditions. Comfrey grows best in partial to full sun in moist, fertile soil. Comfrey is propagated by root cuttings or crown divisions. Comfrey can be planted throughout the growing season but establishes best when planted in the spring. Maintain moderate soil moisture, especially when plants are young. Once established, comfrey outcompetes weeds and does not have any reported insect or disease issues in Utah. Some leaves and roots are harvested after the first year of growth. It should be noted that consuming high doses or excessive …

The changes in stream discharge extremes due to temperature and seasonality are key metrics in assessing the effects of climate change on the hydrological cycle. While scaling is commonly applied to temperature and precipitation due to the physical connections between temperature and moisture (i.e., Clausius–Clapeyron), the scaling rate of stream discharge extremes to air and dewpoint temperatures has not been evaluated. To address this challenge, we assess the scaling rates between stream discharge and air temperature and between stream discharge and dewpoint temperature in Utah using a well-designed statistical framework. While there are deviations from the Clausius–Clapeyron (CC) relationship in …

Locations of 74,755 vascular plant vouchers representing 2,425 species were digitized into a spatial database from the Atlas of the Vascular Plants of Utah (Albee et al. 1988). Source maps consisted of 1:6,000,000-scale shaded relief maps of Utah with points representing collection locations by species. Location points, representing 1 or more specimens, were transposed onto these maps from the approximately 400,000 herbarium records of 3 major universities and federal land management agencies.

This paper shares the experiences, engagement, and struggle of one young Indigenous Hawaiian woman as she grapples with her sense of disconnect with STEM while serving as a land protector on the Mauna Kea, the home of the Thirty Meter Telescope being built over the objection of the local Indigenous community. I examine her changing perspectives and connections to STEM through her engagement during a summer school enrichment class focused on science and technology learning in service of community goals. Findings indicate that her sense of agency and autonomy were greatly improved by engaging in a space where science and …

Supervised practice is a prerequisite to becoming a registered dietitian. Research suggests that environmental and social factors may affect dietary choices. This focus group research aimed to gather opinions from dietetic interns to understand what factors related to supervised practice, if any, affected their dietary habits. Qualitative data were collected via seven recorded virtual focus groups in which trained moderators facilitated a discussion using a series of controlled questions. Participants, dietetic interns (n = 42) who were currently completing or had completed their supervised practice within the previous six months, attended one of seven virtual focus groups. Each focus …

Institutional Predictors Of Campus Sexual Misconduct Reporting: The Role Of Gender In Leadership, Alison Cook, Christy Glass, Alicia Ingersoll
Management Faculty Publications
Sexual misconduct remains at crisis levels on American college campuses and is vastly underreported. Most research focuses on individual level risks of assault and perpetration, yet campuses vary significantly in sexual offenses and reporting rates. The current study responds to calls to consider institutional factors that shape campus climates for sexual misconduct and reporting. We consider the role of gender in leadership, analyzing the impact of women's appointment as college president on reporting rates over time. We consider individual and organizational mechanisms that may shape the impact of women's appointment on reporting rates. Our analyses rely on data from U.S. …

Neural Network Flow Optimization Using An Oscillating Cylinder, Meihua Zhang, Zhongquan Charlie Zheng, Yangliu Liu, Xiaoyu Jiang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Flow behaviors of a downstream object can be affected significantly by an upstream object in close proximity. Combined with the neural network algorithms, this concept is used for flow control in this study to optimize the aerodynamic performance of a downstream object. Flow with an oscillating cylinder placed upstream is systematically studied because there are multiple control parameters that influence the flow dynamics around the downstream object. These control parameters are used as the input factors of a back-propagation neural network, and then a revised genetic algorithm is applied to find the optimal set of control parameters. In the current …

It's cold out there! Frost: An overlooked aspen disturbance
Joseph D. Birch
If you have ever decried the arrival of a frost in May or June, you are not alone. As it turns out, late-spring frost is also a problem for aspen. Our recent research details the damaging history of defoliating frost on aspen over nearly two centuries. Early in the growing season aspen are undergoing budburst and are particularly vulnerable to frost. When a frost arrives shortly after budburst, the buds and leaves may be so seriously damaged that the aspen is partially or fully defoliated. This disturbance disproportionately …

Sensitivity Of Optimal Midcourse Correction Scheduling For Robust Cislunar Trajectory Design, David Geller, David Woffinden, Stefan Bieniawski
Sensitivity Of Optimal Midcourse Correction Scheduling For Robust Cislunar Trajectory Design, David Geller, David Woffinden, Stefan Bieniawski
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
A new approach to optimal trajectory design is the determination of optimal trajectories that are robust to initial trajectory dispersions, navigation errors, maneuver execution errors, and environment modeling errors. This paper investigates the sensitivity of cislunar robust optimal trajectory design to launch date, duration of navigation measurement passes, and navigation measurement frequency. For a given cislunar trajectory from translunar injection (TLI) to lunar orbit insertion (LOI), the optimal locations of midcourse corrections, also known as trajectory correction maneuvers (TCM) are determined by minimizing the final 3-σ ∆v subject to a final 3-σ position dispersion constraint for a …

Geospatial research in archaeology often relies on datasets previously collected by other archaeologists or third-party groups, such as state or federal government entities. This article discusses our work with geospatial datasets for identifying, documenting, and evaluating prehistoric and historic water features in the western United States. As part of a project on water heritage and long-term views on water management, our research has involved aggregating spatial data from an array of open access and semi-open access sources. Here, we consider the challenges of working with such datasets, including outdated or disorganized information, and fragmentary data. Based on our experiences, we …
Dynamic Fecal Microbiota Transfer From Mice With Western Diet-Induced Severe Colitis And Colon Tumorigenesis Did Not Exacerbate Colitis Symptoms Or Colon Tumorigenesis In Recipient Mice Fed Either The Ain93g Diet Or The Total Western Diet, Abby D. Benninghoff

Consumption of the total Western diet (TWD) in mice has been shown to increase gut inflammation, promote colon tumorigenesis, and alter the fecal microbiome composition in mice as com-pared to mice fed a healthy diet, AIN93G (AIN). However, it is unclear whether the gut micro-biome contributes directly to colitis-associated CRC in this model. The objective of this study was to determine whether dynamic fecal microbiota transfer (FMT) from host mice fed either AIN or TWD basal diets would alter colitis symptoms or colitis-associated CRC in recipient mice, which were fed either AIN or TWD directly using a 2x2 factorial experiment …
