Ganciclovir (GCV) has been shown to be an effective antiviral for the treatment of congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) induced sensorineural hearing loss. However, dose-dependent adverse effects (e.g. neutropenia) require strict, burdensome monitoring, limiting GCV use in some patients. Quercetin is a flavonoid with antioxidant properties that has demonstrated antiviral therapy against CMV. Although more benign than GCV, quercetin has limited therapeutic value due to its poor solubility. We previously reported that GCV improves hearing thresholds in a murine model of cCMV. We also noted that solubilizing quercetin with poloxamer 188 (P188) and combining with GCV therapy amplified CMV inhibition in murine …

Plant diseases significantly reduce crop yields, threatening food security and agricultural sustainability. Fungi are the most destructive type of phytopathogen, and they are responsible for major yield losses in some of the most crucial crops grown across the world. In this study, a fungus isolate was detected from infected tomato plants and molecularly identified as Pythium aphanidermatum (GenBank accession number MW725032). This fungus caused damping-off disease and was shown to be pathogenic. Moreover, the expression of five pathogenesis-related genes, namely PR-1, PR-2, PR-3, PR-4, and PR-5, was quantitatively evaluated under the inoculation of tomato with …

Quantifying And Managing Anthropogenic And Drought Influences On Instream Temperatures, Abbygael Johnson Apr 2023

Quantifying And Managing Anthropogenic And Drought Influences On Instream Temperatures, Abbygael Johnson

Student Research Symposium

The western US is currently experiencing effects of one of the worst droughts in 1200 years. These effects are evident in our rivers, as shown by broad scale reductions in baseflow. This lack of runoff combined with growing demands has resulted in the overallocation of the water contained within our rivers and reservoirs. Water temperature is the key factor in many biological, chemical, and physical processes, making it critical to the health of ecosystems . River temperatures are a function of many factors including weather and tree canopy, but also instream flow volumes and water residence time. When instream flows …

Reason And Rationality In The Post-Pandemic Era, Jordan Schwanke Apr 2023

Reason And Rationality In The Post-Pandemic Era, Jordan Schwanke

Student Research Symposium

My research investigates human reason and rationality's proper function and role in the Post-Pandemic Era. First, humans can intuit reasons for their beliefs and intuitions. But more importantly, reason is the metarepresentational ability to evaluate the strengths or weaknesses of reasons and arguments. Reason, through the process of evolution, is fundamentally used for justification and argumentation. Second, individuals can summon reason to justify an established moral intuition. Argumentation helps interlocutors self-reflect on political and moral beliefs, opinions, and intuitions, influencing people to change their minds. Third, human reason and rationality are accompanied by internal cognitive limitations: confirmation bias influences the …

Comparison Of Product And Observational Measures Of Academic Engagement Under Different Contingencies Of Reinforcement, Milad Najafichaghabouri Apr 2023

Comparison Of Product And Observational Measures Of Academic Engagement Under Different Contingencies Of Reinforcement, Milad Najafichaghabouri

Student Research Symposium

Educational researchers frequently target and measure student on-task behavior in academic settings. On-task behavior is typically defined based on the topography of the behavior (i.e., what it looks like to be on task). However, few studies have assessed if students being on task corresponds with students completing more work or responding more accurately. The current study examined correspondence between on-task behavior, work completion, and work accuracy for four elementary and middle-school aged children across different contingencies of reinforcement in a clinical setting. Academic engagement was assessed for each participant under different conditions: baseline, on task, work completion, work accuracy, and …

Electromagnetism In Curved Spacetime, Kevin Rhine Apr 2023

Electromagnetism In Curved Spacetime, Kevin Rhine

Student Research Symposium

Electromagnetism is well-understood in the case of flat spacetimes through Maxwell's equations. However, these equations do not account for spacetime curvature, yet there exist environments in which the spacetime curves enough to affect electromagnetic fields. Such extreme conditions can be found in the early stages of the universe, as well as near dense objects such as neutron stars and charged black holes. In order to understand electromagnetic interactions in these environments, one must solve the coupled Einstein-Maxwell equations, which form a highly complicated non-linear system of second-order partial differential equations. Despite their immense complexity, we can solve these equations by …
