Vernacular Religiosity: Liminality, Mentorship, And Communal Reciprocity In Women's Religious Communities, Megan J. Miller
Vernacular Religiosity: Liminality, Mentorship, And Communal Reciprocity In Women's Religious Communities, Megan J. Miller
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis is a study on women’s religious communities, and the vernacularized traditions practiced by the women themselves from a folkloric perspective. Examining the creative and meaningful ways women find to interact with their faith on a daily basis, this thesis proposes a natural cycle of religious participation which allows the women to move between active and passive participation roles within their religious communities, and creates equitable spaces for women by relying on the communal reciprocity of the group.
By focusing on individual women and their experiences and belief practices as part of a larger community of religious practice, this …
Financial Overconfidence, Borrowing, And Life-Cycle Outcomes, Jessica B. Parkinson
Financial Overconfidence, Borrowing, And Life-Cycle Outcomes, Jessica B. Parkinson
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This paper studies the effects of overconfidence in a lifetime consumption and savings model that allows for debt accumulation. Overconfidence, a well-documented behavioral bias, leads individuals to hold distorted perceptions of the different interest rates that they face on their savings and on their borrowings. While existing life-cycle models with overconfidence abstract from debt, I introduce a spread between the interest rates on savings and on borrowings, where the overconfident individual forms distorted perceptions of this spread. To model the actual and the perceived spreads, a continuously differentiable logistic function is utilized, and these spreads are incorporated into a standard …
Patterns Of Acquisition For /ɹ/ Across Phonetic Contexts, Hailey Nielson
Patterns Of Acquisition For /ɹ/ Across Phonetic Contexts, Hailey Nielson
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Purpose:
This study examined longitudinal changes in /ɹ/ production (i.e., the “r” sound) among 14 children aged five to seven at risk for persistent speech sound disorders (SSDs). Children at risk for SSDs show slower or atypical development of /ɹ/, yet little is known about which early patterns predict persistent difficulty, making it difficult for clinicians to prioritize caseloads and provide timely intervention. Using perceptual accuracy ratings across varied /ɹ/ contexts, we modeled growth in /ɹ/ accuracy across different word contexts and evaluated the extent to which early accuracy and changes in /ɹ/production predicted mastery at age seven.
Methods:
Longitudinal …
Implementation Of Udl In Secondary Classrooms: A Capstone Project, Livia J. Mortensen
Implementation Of Udl In Secondary Classrooms: A Capstone Project, Livia J. Mortensen
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
In today’s classrooms, students come from various backgrounds and may benefit from a variety of instructional approaches to meet their unique learning needs. Regardless of the need to tailor instruction for students, traditional teaching methods continue in classrooms but often fail to accommodate all the needs of our students. Many students, including students with disabilities, may struggle to engage with the standard curriculum that does not provide sufficient flexibility in instruction to reach all types of learners (Smith, 2012). Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework that seeks to address this specific issue by promoting inclusive teaching practices, …
Open Space Management Planning: A Framework And Case Study From Eagle Mountain City, Utah, Nathan K. Shumway
Open Space Management Planning: A Framework And Case Study From Eagle Mountain City, Utah, Nathan K. Shumway
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Open Space Management Plans (OSMPs) are increasingly used by municipalities to guide the long-term stewardship of natural lands; however, little formal guidance exists regarding how these plans are structured, developed, or organized in practice. While numerous OSMPs are publicly available, their compositional logic, procedural workflows, and thematic priorities remain largely undocumented within academic literature. This study addresses that gap through a qualitative document analysis of fifteen publicly accessible OSMPs from the western United States, published between 2015 and 2024.
Using manual matrix-based coding in Microsoft Excel, each plan was analyzed through three lenses: structural composition, procedural development, and thematic content. …
Which Energy Expenditure Equation Is Most Accurate In A Field-Based Setting?, Merrill C. Ward
Which Energy Expenditure Equation Is Most Accurate In A Field-Based Setting?, Merrill C. Ward
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Several energy expenditure prediction equations for walking on varied terrain exist; however, these predictions are often theoretical and have not undergone rigorous field testing for accuracy. Field research on this topic is sparse. The aim of this study was to determine if any existing energy expenditure prediction equations are accurate in a field-based setting with load and gradient being taken into account (i.e., under conditions that are most applicable to day hiking). This was done by directly measuring relative VO2 (ml/kg/min) of study participants and comparing these direct measurements to the values generated from the existing prediction equations. Fifteen …

The Cache Valley Express: A Proposal For Bus Rapid Transit Serving Cache County, Utah, Benjamin L. Chandler
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a transit route, often with its own dedicated lane, that uses buses but has greater frequency and greater distance between stops than local bus routes. These elements allow passengers to reach their destination more quickly. A BRT's stations have many of the same amenities found at a light rail station. By building a BRT line, Cache Valley, Utah can prepare for the growth it is already facing. This study aims to determine the most useful route for a BRT line, which would be known as the Cache Valley Express (CVX), and evaluate the general …

Check-In/Check-Out Implementation Across Grade Levels For Improving Unexcused Absences In A High School Setting, Otis C. Bitsuie
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Chronic absenteeism may contribute to declining graduation rates for many students with disabilities. Students with disabilities face challenges with academic and emotional behaviors. Chronic absenteeism causes students to fall behind with classroom materials, and they are unable to utilize instructional supports, emotional supports, or assistance with transitions. Students with disabilities who miss class often tend to drop out of school, which leads to difficulties with navigating post-high school life. Students who do not obtain a school diploma often experience high unemployment rates, homelessness, and incarceration. Students facing chronic absenteeism need interventions that will improve problem behaviors amongst students. I will …

In This World: A Scalable Methodology For Scenic Design, Michael W. D. Francis
In This World: A Scalable Methodology For Scenic Design, Michael W. D. Francis
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis examines how strong scenic design emerges not from how something looks, but from a clear understanding of how its world works. Rather than starting from aesthetic preference or visual trends, it outlines a process that identifies a central idea within a story and uses that idea to shape a cohesive spatial environment. By focusing on how a world behaves - what drives it, what resists change, and how its internal logic operates - design decisions begin to align, creating work that feels intentional rather than assembled. Through a series of production case studies, it evaluates how that process …
“Women Vs. Perfection:” A Pentadic Analysis Of Toxicity In Online Gaming, Niyayesh Arshadnia
“Women Vs. Perfection:” A Pentadic Analysis Of Toxicity In Online Gaming, Niyayesh Arshadnia
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis utilizes a mixed-methods approach to examine an online video game player community as a case study to diagnose the underlying reason for widespread hostile behavior, especially towards women, among players in the online gaming sphere. The application of dramatism, a rhetorical theory that breaks down human behavior into elements of drama, reveals that the gaming industry and gaming culture are the likely perpetuators of this issue due to the environments they create and the behaviors they reward. This project is a diagnostic step towards rhetorically alleviating the exclusionary attitude of users in online gaming spaces through further research.
“The Revolution Begins At Home”: Ambivalent Sexism In The Color Purple And The Help, Berit P. Gibson
“The Revolution Begins At Home”: Ambivalent Sexism In The Color Purple And The Help, Berit P. Gibson
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Ambivalent sexism theory, proposed by Glick and Fiske in 1996, argues that sexism is comprised of both negative and “positive” images of women. The theory has become a staple in research on sexism as it theorizes the Madonna/whore dichotomy as sexist on both sides of the binary, and how attitudes switch from “positive” to negative. But, so far, literature scholars have not used the theory to read literature. As the theory is based in ideals of white womanhood, how do we do so in an intersectional way?
In order to work through this question, I bring in The Color Purple …
Quietude, Caroline Roberts
Quietude, Caroline Roberts
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
I grew up in a landscape shaped by the slow withdrawal of an ancient glacier. Its passage carved, gathered, deposited, and smoothed, a force both powerful and tender. What remains is not dramatic ruin, but a terrain of gradual accumulation. Small shifts in light, air, and temperature create an immersive atmosphere—an intimacy that comes through proximity, through a landscape encountered within reach.
This body of ceramic work emerges from an attempt to create such an atmosphere. I am interested in how an object might carry a similar quietude—not as absence or restraint, but as an active force. It is the …

Grit, Nikita Nenashev
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Grit is the pursuit of intuition and sustained attention in the search for expression. My work aims to create a sense of both familiarity and mystery by operating between the framework of utility and abstraction. I investigate the liminal space between what is known and unknown, creating surfaces and forms that challenge our perceptions of beauty.
Working gesturally and swiftly invites the clay to reveal indicators of its character, leaving evidence of the forces involved in the creation of each form. Textured and scorched surfaces, produced through the firing process, reflect the transformation of malleable material into a state of …

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
The ancient Greek myth speaks of Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to mankind. I engaged this body of work without the use of maquette, drawings or markings. What emerges from this method is archetypal in nature. I leave the tool marks as my fingerprints laid bare.
Long Term Changes In Elk Group Size And Composition (2002-2023) In Relation To Wolf Hunting Sucess, Kennedy Price
Long Term Changes In Elk Group Size And Composition (2002-2023) In Relation To Wolf Hunting Sucess, Kennedy Price
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Elk (Cervus elaphus) in Yellowstone National Park exist within a predator-prey system shaped by long-term interactions with wolves (Canis lupus). This predator-prey system represents an important model for understanding how predation influences ungulate behavior and social organization. Predators affect prey behavior through direct and indirect interactions and may cause long-term changes. What this study strives to answer is if predator success can have long term effects on prey grouping behavior and age-sex structure. In a previous study, wolves were found to be most successful hunting medium sized group of elk (20-49 individuals) in Yellowstone National Park. …

Developing Training And Streamlining Training Management Process For Smithfield Fire Department Employees In Aha, Naemt, And Aap Certifications, Michael Christopher Popa Ii
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The rapid operational expansion of the Smithfield Fire Department and EMS (SFD)—marked by a 300% increase in call volume and a transition to a fully professional, independent paramedic service—exposed critical systemic inefficiencies in clinical preparedness and personnel credentialing. This project addresses the "HALO Paradox," wherein high-acuity, low-occurrence emergencies require expert-level proficiency that cannot be maintained through call volume alone. Historically, the agency relied on fragmented, external continuing education (CE) that incurred high financial costs, lacked equipment standardization, and created administrative bottlenecks during biannual recertification cycles. The central objective of this capstone was to engineer a sustainable, in-house training infrastructure that …
Automating Building Feature Recognition In Digital Twin Models Using Computer Vision, Jaron Harbison
Automating Building Feature Recognition In Digital Twin Models Using Computer Vision, Jaron Harbison
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Standard 3D scans treat all surfaces as generic geometry, but Wi-Fi signals don't. A signal drops by a different magnitude through a wooden door than a concrete wall. Without labeling these materials, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) cannot accurately predict "dead zones". This project addresses that gap by creating a machine learning model that identifies structural and architectural features. This includes features such as walls, doors, windows, and columns directly from RGB-D (Red, Green, Blue, Depth) point cloud data.
I constructed the model on a custom U-Net architecture featuring a symmetric encoder-decoder structure with skip connections, trained on the StructScan3D dataset …

Individuals in these environments reported higher levels …
Evidence-Based Practice In Speech-Language Pathology: Creating Effective Therapy Materials, Avalee Dunkley
Evidence-Based Practice In Speech-Language Pathology: Creating Effective Therapy Materials, Avalee Dunkley
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Evidence-based practice is a fairly new topic in speech-language pathology, gaining traction among professionals in the field in the last twenty years. Evidence-based practice is the integration of high-quality research, patient cultural and social values, and clinician expertise to treat a patient. Patients are more likely to progress when these three factors are combined. This paper explores four areas of speech-language pathology that are commonly treated in school-aged children: speech sound disorders, language disorders, social communication disorders, and the use of augmentative and alternative communication. Each section gives a summary of the disorder and how the disorder can be treated …

Inter-Government Communication– Transportation Options For Utahns, Andrew Nicholas Barber
Inter-Government Communication– Transportation Options For Utahns, Andrew Nicholas Barber
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
As a growing Western state, Utah has ambitions for building more infrastructure, especially public transportation. The way it organizes its communication strategy for public transportation, however, represents a microcosm in a larger debate between political scientists and economists. Professionals have backed one of two models for inter-government communication: the decentralized or “fiscal federalism” model and the centralized model, and pros and cons have been theorized for both. Decentralization, on paper, is more democratic, can better represent the needs of its constituents, and can better navigate pesky bureaucratic red tape, but is less efficient. Centralization, on the other hand, is more …
Challenging Myths In Speech-Language Pathology: A Scientific Review Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication (Aac) Use, Bilingualism, And Late Talking, Mariah Morris
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Persistent myths within the field of speech-language pathology continue to influence clinical decision-making and contribute to biases experienced by both providers and clients. This scientific review examines common misconceptions surrounding late talking, bilingualism, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) by evaluating current evidence-based research. Specifically, this review addresses three central questions: Do children outgrow late talking? Does bilingualism cause language delay in children? Does AAC hinder speech development?
An analysis of multiple peer-reviewed studies revealed little statistical support for the belief that bilingualism or AAC use causes language delays. Instead, research indicates that factors such as limited access to language-rich …
