This family is restricted to the paper-making wasps, all social species living in large communities and having three distinct sexes, female, worker, and male, thus agreeing with the social bees, the Apidea and Bombidae, and with many ants, Dorylidae, Myrmicidae, Formicidae, etc.

In this paper 335 species are recorded, of which number 201 are regarded as new to science and are here first described. Of the 10 superfamilies, into which the order is now divided, all are represented in Alaska and are distributed into 29 families and 183 genera. Two of these genera, Dallatorrea and Hyposyntactus are new, and of the remainder, thirty have not been previously reported from North America.

The winter growing of lettuce is not yet practiced in Utah. There is a good demand for lettuce in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and in some of the smaller towns during the winter, but this demand is supplied by the California grown product. It is yet to be determined whether or not lettuce can be grown profitably under glass in this State. The recent high prices of the winter product indicate that the forcing of a moderate amount of lettuce can be done with profit.

Meyer in Hamburg habe ich eine genane Untersuchung der mir bekannten Arten du groupe si confus de Prosopis dilatala K.", wie J. Vachal sehr richtig sagt, vorgenommen: dadurch habe ich die Uebenengung gewonnen, dass im nordwestlichen Deutschland 2 sehr nahe verwandte Arten ans der genannten Gruppe vorkommen, welche ich irrtumlich bisher beide als P. dilatata K. bezeichuete. That beet pulp has a high feeding value, when fed in proper combinations, has been shown conclusively since the establishment of the first beet sugar factory in the State, ten years ago. There are in Utah many lands that will not, for many years to come, be brought under irrigation; and there are many others that probably will never be irrigated. These are usually high-lying lands, often far from large streams, to irrigate which, would require the construction of exceptionally costly reservoirs, dams, and canals.
