Über die Apiden von Westpreußen ist schon eine Anzahl von Arbeiten veröffentlicht, und in den letzten Jahren sind auch in verschiedenen Teilen der Provinz gelegentlich oder planmäßig Bienen gesammelt worden. Daher dürfte es nunmehr möglich sein, ein, wenn auch nicht erschöpfendes, so doch einigermaßen vollständiges Verzeichnis der im Gebiete der Provinz vorkommenden Bienenarten aufzustellen. Überdies ist seit dem Erscheinen der letzten zusammenfassenden faunistischen Arbeit über die preußischen Apiden - der in den „Hymenoptera aculeata der Provinzen West- und Ostpreußen" von Brischke enthaltenen - eine geraume Zeit verflossen, so daß es zweckmäßig sein dürfte, eine die neusten Untersuchungen und Sammelergebnisse berücksichtigende …

In verschiedenen Gegenden Deutschlands, so in Brandenburg, Posen, Sachsen und WestpreuBen, sind seit langerer oder kurzerer Zeit Forscher und Sammler auf Anregung von Vereinen hin oder aus eigenem Antrieb tatig, die Apidenfauna der betreffenden Gebiete festzustellen. In OstpreuBen hat sich die Physikalisch-okonomische Gesellschaft zu Konigsberg auf Veranlassung von Herrn Kreisarzt Dr. P. SPEISER, jetzt in Labes in Pommern, die Aufgabo gestellt, die Provinz in apidologischer Bezichung zu durchforschen. The species of Cerceris are among the prettiest of our entomophilous wasps; usually black, with bands and spots of yellow, of the general appearance of many species of Crabro. They are most abundant on flowers in July, some occur in June, and others as late as October. They are not especially shy, so are readily taken in the net.

In the spring of 1903, we commenced at the Utah Experiment Station a series of experiments, the purpose of which was to study the development and movement of nitrates in irrigated soil. The work was so outlined that it should give some very definite results, both as to the influence of water and the plant, upon the nitric nitrogen content of the soil.

In the past a great deal of experimental work has been carried on to determine how flowers attract insects. The conclusions reached have been various and have served to provoke lively discussions as to the relative importance of the visual sense and the olfactory sense in guiding insects to flowers.
