Circular No. 58 - Potato Production In Utah, George Stewart
Circular No. 58 - Potato Production In Utah, George Stewart
UAES Circulars
Potatoes were the first crop planted in Utah. In July 1847, the Mormon pioneers turned the water from City Creek over the parched land near what is now the center of Salt Lake City. The ground was then broken and sown at once to potatoes. Only a small yield was obtained but this helped materially to eke out the meagre food supply until the harvest of 1848. During the several hard years that followed potatoes were among the most important foods for the pioneer settlers. Since then they have held a prominent place in the agriculture of the state.

Circular No. 57 - Economy In Harvesting Sugar-Beets, George Stewart
Circular No. 57 - Economy In Harvesting Sugar-Beets, George Stewart
UAES Circulars
During sugar-beet harvest the farmer has two big opportunities to increase his income from the beet crop. No great amount of extra labor is entailed in either case, and yet the profits are written in large figures. To neglect getting the most from beets at harvest time after a toilsome and expensive production seems wasteful. Farmers are urged to give full consideration to these two phases of beet harvest: (1) The making of beet-top silage from fresh beet tops. Large yields of good quality feed may thus be secured. (2) The preventing of losses in tonnage due to evaporation. Poor …

Circular No. 56 - Summary Of Publications
UAES Circulars
Circular No. 56 contains summaries of publications of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station' issued since September, 1924. The publications of this Station are no longer sent to a general mailing list (except in case of libraries) but are sent only on request. Therefore, copies of any of the publications listed will be sent without charge to those requesting them as long as the supply is available. However, in case of abstracts of scientific and technical papers the supply is very limited and the requests for these should be limited as far as possible only to those who are especially …

Circular No. 55 - Rules And Regulations For The Second Utah Intermountain Egg-Laying Contest, Byron Alder
Circular No. 55 - Rules And Regulations For The Second Utah Intermountain Egg-Laying Contest, Byron Alder
UAES Circulars
The support given the first Utah Intermountain Egg-Laying Contest by the poultry breeders of this section and the very unusual records obtained during this contest to date seem to justify this announcement of the rules and regulations for the second contest to begin November 1, 1925. The contest is located on a part of the Utah Agricultural College Farm near the experimental poultry yards. It is managed by the Poultry Department with an experienced poultry raiser in direct charge of the feeding and care of the hens in the contest. The buildings, grounds, and fences were built and furnished by …
Bulletin No. 194 - The Influence Of Storage On The Composition Of Flour, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst
Bulletin No. 194 - The Influence Of Storage On The Composition Of Flour, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst
UAES Bulletins
There is quite a general belief among millers, bakers, and the laity that flour improves on ageing. However, there is no definite information as to the time requisite for this improvement nor whether it reaches a maximum and then deteriorates. The information is no more exact as to the changes which occur during the ageing process or the conditions which govern them. We have found no reference in the literature where bad effects have resulted from storage, provided a highly-milled, sound flour is stored in dry, well-ventilated rooms free from odors (20). The results which have been reported point to …

The Effect Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of Solution Upon The Absorption Of Water By The Hard Seed Of Alfalfa, A. L. Starr
The Effect Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of Solution Upon The Absorption Of Water By The Hard Seed Of Alfalfa, A. L. Starr
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The hard seed coat found on some seeds has long been an object of interest to experimentors in seed germination and a great deal of work has been done on various phases of the problem. Some have attacked it with the idea of hastening germination, while others have been interested in determining the nature of the seed coat and isolating the factors which make it impermeable under ordinary favorable germination conditions.

The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford
The Relation Of Light To Soil Moisture Phenomena And To Water Transmission In Plants, Leon B. Linford
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An attempt was made in this laboratory to measure the pressure or capillary potential of soils by a vapor pressure method. The experiment was carried out by placing small cans of soil in dessicators with solutions of known vapor pressure in the bottom. These dessicators were immersed in a constant temperature water bath. It was hoped that by this method the vapor pressure of the soils could be determined and the pressure potentials calculated as will be explained in a later part of this paper. The results were disappointing because the wet soils in dessicators over pure water dried out …

The Effect Of Sulfur On The Microflora Of The Soil, J. M. Fife
The Effect Of Sulfur On The Microflora Of The Soil, J. M. Fife
Biology
Sulfur is one of the required elements for all plants and animals. Does the Greenville soil contain sufficient sulfur for the maximum bacterial activities when it contains only .0068 per cent?(7) It is the object of this paper to present data which has been obtained in trying to answer this question. The Greenville soil is an ideal media in which to study the effect of sulfur on the soil microflora due to the abundance of all the required elements with the exception of sulfur, and its most interesting microflora (6) (7).
