Inheritance Of Resistance To Three Physiologic Forms Of Bunt In Ridit X Utah-Kanred Cross, Muhammad Ibrahim Shah
Inheritance Of Resistance To Three Physiologic Forms Of Bunt In Ridit X Utah-Kanred Cross, Muhammad Ibrahim Shah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bunt is a serious disease of wheat found in nearly all weat-growing countries of the world. In India the disease is more severe in the northern provinces than in the central and southern provinces as the temperature during planting time is favorable to the germination of the fungous growth in the northern part. In the central or southern parts, this is not the case. In the United States this disease causes heavy annual loss. The amount of smut in a field, or the percentage of smutted heads, is generally taken as an index of the reduction in yield or loss …
A Study Of Certain Economic Factors Involved In The Organization And Management Of Poultry Farms In Utah, Robert L. Wrigley Jr.
A Study Of Certain Economic Factors Involved In The Organization And Management Of Poultry Farms In Utah, Robert L. Wrigley Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the organization and management of poultry farming many problems arise which call for a solution. Among such problems are the following: The amount of floor space per hen which will prove the most economical, the value of electric lights in poultry houses, amount of labor which can be profitably invested in a poultry flock, and the amount of feed which can be economically fed to poultry.
There are many influences which determine poultry profits that cannot be controlled directly, but the factors mentioned here are largely within the control of the poultryman. He should, therefore, direct them as far …
A Survey Of The Literature Dealing With The Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolism Of Normal Children, Albertine Appy Noecker
A Survey Of The Literature Dealing With The Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolism Of Normal Children, Albertine Appy Noecker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study is to collect and organize all data available to the investigator on the subject of calcium and phosphorus requirements for normal children. Since it is the business of nutrition to maintain health and prevent disorders, leaving the cure of disorders to the medical profession, this study deals with the calcium and phosphorus metabolism of normal children and avoids going into the pathological phases, taking up rickets and tetany only in so far as prevention is concerned.
If this study has any value it lies in the fact that the findings of investigators seem to be …

Bulletin No. 253 - Cherries Of Utah, Fancis M. Coe
Bulletin No. 253 - Cherries Of Utah, Fancis M. Coe
UAES Bulletins
In the production of cherries, as with all fruit plants, growers are dealing with clonal varieties which are individuals, and as such differ from each other in their characteristics. Since these characteristics vitally affect the value of each variety and returns from its culture, the importance of complete information on these characteristics for a given region is evident.
All varieties now grown, unfortunately, have faults or fail to reach the ideal in one or more important characters. They may lack size, productivity, hardiness, or quality. They may lack vigor or be susceptible to diseases and insects. They may ripen at …

Bulletin No. 254 - Summer And Winter Rations For Fattening Hogs, H. H. Smith, E. J. Maynard
UAES Bulletins
Practically all of the 85,000 hogs on the farms of Utah (as of August 1, 1934) are in the irrigated sections of the state where they fit in well with dairying. Utah, however, is a hog-deficient area and produces about 109,000 hogs less than are slaughtered in the state for its own use. Large amounts of milk by-products such as skim milk, buttermilk, and whey are produced in Utah. Large amounts of alfalfa are also grown in the irrigated sections, thus providing excellent pasture for the growing out and feeding of market hogs. Barley is the principal feeding grain grown …

Bulletin No. 251 - Apricot Varieties, Francis M. Coe
Bulletin No. 251 - Apricot Varieties, Francis M. Coe
UAES Bulletins
While this publication has as its primary purpose the presentation of data as a progress report on the apricot variety testing work of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, study of the apricot varieties being grown in the state and of the literature showed such a confusion of varietal nomenclature in orchards, nurseries, and even in the literature on apricot varieties, that it was considered desirable to review the literature and to describe the varieties at hand more completely than is usual with a report of this kind in the hope that by so doing the apricot variety situation might be …

Forest Fire Damage Studies In The Northeast--I. Bark-Beetles And Fire Damaged Hardwoods, Paul W. Stickel
Forest Fire Damage Studies In The Northeast--I. Bark-Beetles And Fire Damaged Hardwoods, Paul W. Stickel
The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography
In reporting the damage to trees scorched lightly at the base by fire the average fire warden and even the technically trained forester is given to stating that little harm has been done providing the tree crowns remain green. Such a statement is far from being correct, failing as it does to take into account the aftermath of insect and fungus damage which invariably follows even the lightest of surface fires. In the case reported herein, over 50 per cent of the fire-scorched hardwoods showed signs of the presence of ambrosia-beetles, whose work, even if the trees continue to live, …

Some Factors Involved In The Manufacture Of Brick Cheese, George F. Jackson
Some Factors Involved In The Manufacture Of Brick Cheese, George F. Jackson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The flavor, quality and composition of market brick cheese varies greatly. Its moisture content often ranges from 37 to 43 per cent. The flavor may be similar to Limburger or it may even resemble that of Cheddar. Such a great variation in a specific food product tends toward disappointment for the consumer.
It is believed that a more uniform standard of quality for this product is needed to materially increase its consumption. Therefore, a detailed study of some of the factors involved in the manufacture of brick cheese may help to improve the quality and aid in determining a satisfactory …
The Utah Pioneers, Joel E. Ricks
The Utah Pioneers, Joel E. Ricks
Joel Ricks Collection
Eighty-six years ago the Mormon pioneer company under the leadership of Brigham Young entered this valley as the vanguard of a people who were to build their own civilization in the Great Basin and beyond. They were the fore-runners of a people admirably trained for the task of colonizing the intermountain valleys. The middle west was the proving ground for the Mormon movement. There they developed a missionary system through which they reached sufficient numbers for their far western venture.

This study was undertaken at the request of the Cache County Council of Child Health and Protection, who in cooperation with the Juvenile Court of District No. 1 beginning with 1933 planned specific undertakings to minimize delinquency.
Life is a ceaseless struggle for existence. It enters every aspect of life and culture and in the long run the more fit tend toward the high places and the less fit are sifted and shaken to the low places. This struggle goes on in our physical environment, the less able take poor homes and the poor sections to live. In employment the …

Studies On The Comparative Value Of The Hot Treatment (Krantz Patent) And Common Methods Of Handling Barnyard Manure, Orval E. Winkler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Antidating written human history the dung of animals, chalk, marl, wood ashes and other substances were probably used to increase the productivity of the soil. These practises found their way into the earliest farming activities of the Chinese, Persians, Greeks and Romans. (3)(11) In the Hebrew scriptures mention is made of the "Dung Gate". (10) This was undoubtedly a place given to the marketing of manures. That manure was used as a soil amendment in Asia Minor in Biblical times is not questioned. The famous Roman agricultural writer Cato (234 B.C.) wrote at length on manures and their handling. He …
The Evolution Of The Curriculum Of The Utah State Agricultural College, Alfred B. Hart
The Evolution Of The Curriculum Of The Utah State Agricultural College, Alfred B. Hart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The chief purpose of this work is to trace the development of the curriculum of the Utah State Agricultural College from the establishment of the institution to the present time with emphasis upon the forces shaping it. These forces have been active since colonial times, and in them lies the explanation for much of what the college is today.
The Utah State Agricultural College is a part of a much larger system, which has developed parallel to it in many respects, and which has in other respects been a force in determining the direction in which the college was to …
An Evaluation Of Teaching Practice In The Minimum Essentials Of English Through Grades Six To Twelve In The Schools Of Cache County, Utah 1931-1932, W. Wendell Perkins
An Evaluation Of Teaching Practice In The Minimum Essentials Of English Through Grades Six To Twelve In The Schools Of Cache County, Utah 1931-1932, W. Wendell Perkins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
National English Committees insist that composition content is of first importance; organization of ideas, second; and form third. The writer agrees with this point of view, but believes that a large proportion of class time in English, all through the grades, is spent in trying to establish knowledge and skill in the use of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and mechanics generally.
