Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen May 1941

Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Farmers and agriculturalists have in recent years become more conscious of the seriousness of the weed problems. The solution of this problem is obviously the development of more efficient and less costly methods of eradication. Most pernicious weeds are propagated vegetatively by means of underground parts in which reserve food is stored as a source of energy in tiding the plant over winter and initiating spring growth each year. In order to get at the behavior of these perennial parts, it is necessary to resort to a study of root reserves. This involves information not only on the composition of …

Bulletin No. 296 - Uton: A New High-Yield White Oat Resistant To Loose And Covered Smuts, D. C. Tingey, R. W. Woodward, T. R. Stanton

UAES Bulletins

Oats have been among the five or six leading crops in acreage grown in Utah since its settlement. For many years Swedish Select has been by far the most predominant variety. This variety is well adapted to Utah conditions, but because of its high susceptibility to loose and covered smut, it is not the most desirable.

In 1934, after extensive trials, the variety, Markton, which is resistant to loose and covered smuts, was introduced into the state to replace Swedish Select. In those trials, Markton averaged 13 percent higher in acre yield than Swedish Select. Markton possessed one drawback in …

Bulletin No. 295 - Comparison Of Two Methods Of Determining Wool Density, Milton A. Madsen, Ralph W. Phillips, John V. Christensen, Roy L. Henrie

UAES Bulletins

Density of the fleece is one of the primary factors determining the wool-producing capacity of the sheep. Sheepmen have attempted to evaluate density by handling the fleece. This method is not sufficiently refined for use in experimental work, and may be subject to errors and misinterpretations. For example, if two fleeces are alike in density and diameter of fibers, yet differ in length, the longer fleece will feel less dense. If, on this basis, the sheep with the fleece that appeared most dense were selected for breeding, selection would be away from the longer fleece. Any method that can be …

Transactions Of The Plague Control Conference Of The United States Public Health Service And Twelve Western States, United States Public Health Service Jan 1941

Transactions Of The Plague Control Conference Of The United States Public Health Service And Twelve Western States, United States Public Health Service

Elusive Documents

The plague problem is potentially of grave public health importance. The history of this disease over a period of centuries shows that it has several times assumed epidemic proportions, especially in cities. History also shows that when the disease appears in bubonic form contracted from rat fleas, it sooner or later may assume the pneumonic type and be spread from person to person with fatal results.

From the evidence presented to the conference it appears that complete control of plague is not economically feasible without a great increase in Federal, State, and local expenditures. It is recommended that funds are …

Bulletin No. 294 - Research Aids Utah Agriculture: Biennial Report Utah Agriculture Experiment Station 1938 - 1940, R. H. Walker

UAES Bulletins

The foundation of progress in agriculture as in any other industry is research. Research has resulted in knowledge now daily applied in soil treatment, in irrigation practices, in dealing with insect pests, in breeding new varieties of plants, in animal improvement, in better farm practices, and in better land-use planning. Research undertaken by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station has been outlined to solve specific problems facing Utah agriculture, among them the problems of irrigation, dry farming, range management and animal production. The prosperity of the state is dependent upon the success of these agricultural enterprises. Agricultural research should not, therefore, …

UAES Bulletins

Velvon, a new barley variety with smooth awns, with relatively stiff straw, and with a high degree of resistance to covered smut was developed at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station through the cooperative efforts of the Station and the Division of Cereal Crops and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, U. S. Department of Agriculture. This new variety resulted as a hybrid strain from a cross made in 1930 for the purpose of improving straw strength and the texture of awns.

It has been observed that many ewes in Utah are somewhat under size when eighteen months old, the usual age for first breeding. It is a common experience for these ewes to produce much smaller lamb and wool crops than the older ewes.

Experiments On Artificial Control Of The Strawberry Root-Infesting Weevils Brachyrhinus Ovatus (Linne) And Brachyrhinus Rugosostriatus (Goeze) In Northern Utah, Ray L. Janes May 1940

Experiments On Artificial Control Of The Strawberry Root-Infesting Weevils Brachyrhinus Ovatus (Linne) And Brachyrhinus Rugosostriatus (Goeze) In Northern Utah, Ray L. Janes

Biology

Strawberries In Utah have for many years suffered serious injury fron the larvae of root-infesting snout beetles. Injury caused by the two species, commonly called the strawberry root weevil, Brachyrhinus ovetus (Linne) and the rough strawberry root weevil, B. rugosostriatus (Goeze), is very similar, except that individuals of the latter and larger species consume more food and therefore cause more damage to infested plants for a given population. A third species, B. sulcatus (Fabr.), which is larger and more destructive then the others, has recently appeared in a few fields in Cache County. Beesune of the serious injury caused by …

Sexuality And Related Subjects In Ustilaginales (Smuts), William Vance Wright May 1940

Sexuality And Related Subjects In Ustilaginales (Smuts), William Vance Wright

Biology

The Ustilaginales represent a group of fungi which are all parasitic upon the higher flowering plants. The mycelium is hyaline, somewhate septate, mostly intercellular, branched, and practically restricted to the interior of the host. At maturity the mycelium often disappears, partially, at least, through gelatinization. The fertile mycelia becomes compacted into the masses which give rise to numerous chlamydospores. That is, the chamydospores develop directly from the mycelia. Upon germination, each chlamydospore sends out a short tube called a promycelium. From the promycelium are budded off sporidia, generally four. If the sporidia find logment on suitable host tissue, they germinate …

Certain Factors In Relation To The Present Occupational Status Of Former All-Day Students Of Vocational Agriculture In Utah, Mark Nichols May 1940

Certain Factors In Relation To The Present Occupational Status Of Former All-Day Students Of Vocational Agriculture In Utah, Mark Nichols

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Vocational agriculture had its birth in Utah rural high schools in the spring of 1918. It is a program for training present and future farmers for proficiency in agriculture. The instruction in Utah, as in most states, has been devoted to the training of all-day (high school) students.

Since 1918 considerably over one million dollars of federal, state and local funds have been expended for all-day instruction in vocational agriculture in Utah. The primary objective of the program is to train these boys to become farmers or farm leaders. From time to time the following questions have been asked: Do …

Some Changes In State Educational Administration In Utah In Terms Of The Recommendations Of The Utah Survey Of 1926, Verland L. Christiansen May 1940

Some Changes In State Educational Administration In Utah In Terms Of The Recommendations Of The Utah Survey Of 1926, Verland L. Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Inasmuch as this study is concerned primarily with state school administration and an educational survey concerned with administration, it appears proper to devote some attention to the evolution of these two things. The first consideration will be given to the development of state educational administration.

When grants were made by congress to the various states for educational purposes, the responsibilities of administration went to the states. The state administrative systems evolved as a natural process. Cubberley traces this development from the time the boards consisted of ex officio state officers entirely, through the time when school men were ex officio …
