Bulletin No. 305 - The Composition Of Sumer Range Plants In Utah, L. A. Stoddart, J. E. Greaves
UAES Bulletins
In Utah, a vast industry of livestock grazing, which is the backbone of the state's agriculture, has arisen during the past 75 years. Range land furnishes between 6 and 7 million animal unit months of forage to some 2 1/2 million sheep and 275 thousand range cattle. Income from meat, wool, and range livestock sales in Utah is about $15,801,500 annually, of which $11,700,000 is calculated to be obtained from range lands exclusive of cultivated pastures.
These range lands can be used economically in no other way than by grazing livestock and, because of heavy winter snows and protracted dry …

Bulletin No. 304 - Phosphate Reserves Of Utah, J. Stewart Williams, Alvin M. Hanson
UAES Bulletins
To supplement the work reported by the senior author in Bulletin 290 of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, the writers have visited the phosphate outcrops in Weber, Morgan and Salt Lake Counties, as well as those in the Park City District of Summit County and others west of Midway in Wasatch County. These areas were found to contain considerable phosphatic shale of 25 to 35 percent grade, but no rock of 40 percent grade, the minimum quality included in the estimates in Bulletin 290. However, the data recorded for the sections visited are valuable in showing the leanness of these …

Bulletin No. 302 - Nutritional Inadequacy Of Beet Molasses Rations For Swine, Russel A. Rasmussen, Harry H. Smith, Ralph W. Phillips, Ton J. Cunha
UAES Bulletins
The feeding of large amounts of beet molasses to young hogs causes a condition that is characterized by a wobbly gait, and that is frequently fatal. Hog raisers have apparently recognized this condition for a number of years, since a number of farmers have reported it in their animals. Some farmers have also reported breeding failures and abortions when beet molasses was fed to brood sows. Consequently, beet molasses has not been considered a good hog feed by Utah raisers.
Beet molasses is a relatively cheap source of carbohydrates and could be used advantageously in pork production if the cause …

Bulletin No. 301 - Economic Analysis Of The Weber Central Dairy Association, Walter U. Fuhriman, Harold H. Culter, W. Preston Thomas
UAES Bulletins
At the request of the dairymen in the Ogden milk shed the Department of Agricultural Economics, Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, made an analysis of 162 dairy farms in the Ogden area for the years 1937, 1938 and 1939. The study covered the entire farm business and a detailed analysis of the dairy enterprise.
Since production of dairy products is closely associated with, and is affected by, the marketing institutions which provide outlets for these products, an analysis of marketing phases was made through a study of Weber Central Dairy Association , one of the larger dairies of the area . …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In 1928 the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station conducted an Agricultural Survey of the "Dixie" section of Washington County, Utah, which includes the irrigated section of the Virgin and Santa Clara Rivers. Special reference was given to production and marketing of truck crops and fruit. In 1934-35 another study was conducted by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station and the United States Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Utah State Planning Board. In this study special reference was given to the present use of the agricultural resources of Washington County together with suggestions for better utilization of the resources and the …
Stem Blight Of Alfalfa In Utah: A Complex Of Two Distinct Diseases, William E. Rader
Stem Blight Of Alfalfa In Utah: A Complex Of Two Distinct Diseases, William E. Rader
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In 1908, Sackett described for the first time what appeared to be a new bacterial disease of alfalfa in Colorado. To this particular disease he applied the name “stem blight" and attributed the cause to a bacterium, Pseudomonas medicaginis n. sp. For some two decades or more Sackett's work on this disease was accepted. During this time stem blight, which was first thought to be indigenous to the western United State, was reported from nine states east of the Rocky Mountains. In 1933, Johnson and Valleau described a disease of alfalfa, characterized by stem lesions very similar in appearance to …
Phosphate Deposits In Western Summit, Wasatch, Salt Lake, Morgan, And Weber Counties, Utah, Alvin M. Hanson
Phosphate Deposits In Western Summit, Wasatch, Salt Lake, Morgan, And Weber Counties, Utah, Alvin M. Hanson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Phosphate deposits in the western United States have been the subject of considerable discussion in the last decade, and during the last few years much interest has been aroused in them. Phosphate was first discovered in this area in 1889, but it was not until 1906 that the United States Government took active interest in the study of these deposits. The investigation by the government of the occurrence of western phosphate was begun by Weeks and Ferrier (10), and later carried on by others. On December 9, 1908 the western phosphate reserve was created and many acres of land were …

Raspberry production in Utah is concentrated to a large extent in Utah county. According to the 1940 census, Utah county contains 62 percent of the state acreage of 611 acres. Average raspberry acreage in Utah is only about one-half acre per farm on farms reported as growing raspberries. With such small acreage the average producer cannot afford to devote very much time and effort to the production and marketing of raspberries. In the majority of cases raspberry production is carried on by the farmer's wife, as a means of gaining “pin” money for use in the household. Proceeds from raspberries …

Investigations Of The Fishery Of Fish Lake, Utah, Vaughn D. Madsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fish Lake, which is located in Sevier County, Utah, is considered to be one of the most productive lakes in the intermountain regions. It is visited annually by thousands of fishermen from Utah and surrounding states. In 1934, a thirteen day check made by the Utah Fish and Game Department showed that anglers caught 17,521 fish with a total weight of 13,844 pounds, and spent a sum of $27,246.21 on expenses.
Because of the great recreational value of Fish Lake, chiefly as a fishing resort, it is desirable to find out whether or not any great change has taken place …

A Study Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus Colchicus Torquatus Gmelin) In Northern Utah, William T. Mckean
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Purpose of Study. The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus torquatus Gmelin) is well enough known to need no introduction. It is at present undoubtedly the most abundant and most important gallinaceous game bird in northern Utah. Its abundance and its occurrence in agricultural areas has stimulated much general interest. Yet, aside from two food habits studies, both conducted in Utah County, no intensive research has been made into its ecological relationships or its general life history in Utah.
In order to formulate sound management plans for the pheasant in Utah, the Utah Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit has felt the need …
An Economic Comparison Of Dairy Cattle Breeds In The Weber Milk Shed Of Utah, Edgar Andrew Hyer
An Economic Comparison Of Dairy Cattle Breeds In The Weber Milk Shed Of Utah, Edgar Andrew Hyer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Comparison, of dairy breeds in most of the literature is concerned with listing numbers of cows in each breed, milk and, butterfat production and average butterfat test per cow. Table 1 shows the total distribution of dairy cattle throughout the United States and the relative distribution in the various areas. This table shows the wide difference in popularity of the various breeds in different areas. In the North Atlantic States the Holstein is definitely the most popular breed whereas dairymen in the South Atlantic States and in the South Central States prefer the Jersey breed.

Faculty Honor Lectures
To those who are aesthetic, there is perhaps nothing more inspiring than a beautiful sunset, with brilliant colors above the horizon and with banks of dark clouds above, set in the deep blue of the heavens, or the brilliant hues of the rainbow forming a halo about the majestic mountain with its coat of green, purple, brown, or gray. By these things are the emotions stirred.
The physicist too is emotional but he.is also at times realistic. He becomes sentimental but he also seeks to explain the behavior of nature. By means of devices and instruments his perceptual world is …

CUCUMBERS are included among the 20 important commercial truck crops that are shipped to the markets of the United States in large quantities. The area planted to cucumbers for table purposes in 1940 was 42,870 acres, and the crop produced was valued at $4,993,000, as reported by the Crop Reporting Board, Division of Agricultural Statistics, Agricultural Marketing Service. This acreage is exclusive of approximately 91,000 acres of cucumbers grown for pickles and also of the crop produced in greenhouses. This bulletin deals only with the production of table or slicing cucumbers as a field crop and those grown in coldframes, …

The agricultural experiment stations have contributed in a very material way to the progress of agriculture in the United States not only by the development of better crops and livestock and production practices, but, through basic research on the many and varied problems of agriculture, they have furnished an understanding of those principles upon which progress must depend.
The permanent value of these research centers to the progress of agriculture is no better illustrated than in the present emergency. The ability of farmers to meet the tremendous additional contributions to defense in the way of increased food supplies is dependent …
