An Analysis And Evaluation Of The Methods Of Reporting Pupils' Progress In The Elementary Schools Of Utah, John W. Chadwick May 1945

An Analysis And Evaluation Of The Methods Of Reporting Pupils' Progress In The Elementary Schools Of Utah, John W. Chadwick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study of the pupil-progress reports of the elementary schools of the state of Utah came about as the request of an assignment of the late Superintendent Keith Wahlquist. In answer to requests of local teachers and principals, a committee was assigned to make an investigation and recommendations for a revision of our reporting system. The work with the committee led to further study, which finally led to the writing of this thesis.

After a tentative formulation of the problem, a program of reading was outlined to ascertain current trends in pupil-progress reports. A request was mailed to all school …

Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart Apr 1945

Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart

Faculty Honor Lectures

Although grazing of livestock has been a practice and a profession of man almost from his beginning only recently has range management reached anything approaching a pre~ cise science. Although ' trials and errors over the years brought to light much practical methodology for assuring high production from grazing land, still it remained for the plant physiologist and ecologist to find the whys and wherefores, and to advance new methods and new thoughts which promise to increase productivity still further and at the same time maintain the great range resource.

The peculiar land situation that marked America in her forma~ …

Bulletin No. 317 - Range Lands Of Utah County And Their Utilization, L. A. Stoddart

UAES Bulletins

Utah County, comprising about 1,394,760 acres, lies in the north central part of Utah immediately west of the precipitous Wasatch Mountains. These mountains, which occupy about the eastern half of the county, vary in elevation from 4,700 feet at the bench lands to 9,000 and 10,000 feet. Extreme elevations of 12,000 feet are found on the highest peaks. The western half of the county, although broken by small mountain ranges, is much more level, lower in elevation, and more arid. Whereas the mountainous eastern parts of the county are marked by higher precipitation and, consequently by relatively dense vegetation, mostly …

Bulletin No. 316 - Marketing Fruits And Vegetables In Utah, W. Preston Thomas, George T. Blanch

UAES Bulletins

During the period from 1920 to 1941 the fruit industry in Utah and other areas or the west went through a period of adjustment. Previous to and during World War I, growers received high prices for fruit which resulted in increased production. However, following the sudden drop in prices of 1920, fruit growers had a hard time to market the large tonnage produced. Returns were low. During this period keen competition for the sale of fruits developed between individual growers and various producing areas. Although the problems of adjustment were severe in most fruit areas of the west, the marketing …

Bulletin No. 315 - Biennial Report, 1942-1944

UAES Bulletins

The war years have made new demands on Station personnel and facilities. With fewer staff members and less adequate equipment the Station has not only carried on the regular project work, but the research program has been expanded, and numerous activities resulting from the emergency have been assumed.

The Station has taken a leading place in the victory food production program. Each year it has assumed the lead in a study of the wartime agricultural production capacity of the state and desirable crop and livestock adjustments studying all the agricultural assets and the ability to produce various crops.

As a …

Seeding Grass On Deteriorated Aspen Range, A. Perry Plummer, George Stewart Oct 1944

Seeding Grass On Deteriorated Aspen Range, A. Perry Plummer, George Stewart

Aspen Bibliography

The herbaceous undercover on much of the aspen range in the Intermountain region is badly deteriorated. These areas, naturally highly productive, when revegetated can contribute greatly towards a much needed supply of range forage. One of the major obstacles to successful seeding has been the difficulty of getting the seeds covered with soil since both standing and fallen trees interfere with the use of drills, harrows, or other machinery. In the search for methods to overcome this difficulty, it was found that for open aspen stands the covering of seeds is unnecessary when the right precautions are taken in other …

Bulletin No. 314 - Gains Made By Cattle On Summer Range In Northern Utah, L. A. Stoddart

UAES Bulletins

The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, in 1934, began experimental studies on the grazing of beef steers on mountainous summer range lands. Although the direct purpose of this work was to find whether supplementing phosphorus in the diet of grazing steers would increase their gains, many incidental observations proved of great interest. Among the most significant were the distribution and extent of weight gains through the summer grazing season and the effects of various factors such as weather upon the gains, causing them to vary greatly from year to year.

Bulletin No. 313 - Canal Lining Experiments In The Delta Area, Utah, Orson W. Israelsen, Ronald C. Reeve

UAES Bulletins

THIS bulletin reports data collected in a three-year experimental study of seepage losses from typical canal sections in the Delta Area, Millard County, Utah. It includes analyses of the justifiable cost of lining irrigation canals based on the value of the water saved and on assumed or estimated annual maintenance costs of the lining. vVith present water values and interest rates and canal lining maintenance costs not greater than 9 percent annually, Delta Area irrigation companies can justify initial lining costs of 9 cents per square foot on some of their canals . Seepage losses were measured in eight experimental …

Occupational Survey Of Ogden City With Implications For Vocational Education, Leroy A. Blaser

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the most striking characteristics of society today is the marvelous development that is everywhere manifest along industrial lines. In nearly every department of industry the simple processes which formerly prevailed have become differentiated into a great variety of activities, and all have been organized into a definite system. Methods of exploiting the earth in search for raw materials, processes of manufacture, and modes of distribution and exchange have become wonderfully complex. The influence of this change is far-reaching. It permeates every phase of life. It operates in the church as well as in the state, in the home …

Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown Apr 1944

Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown

Faculty Honor Lectures

The science of nutrition is the science of life. Though man is still ignorant of the true nature of that elusive force we call life, he has learned by means of the discovered laws of nutrition how to preserve and prolong life as well as how to add to the satisfactions of living.

The emergence of the sicence of nutrition from the maze of superstition which for centuries clouded man's thinking is a fascinating story. A story, however, that arouses a feeling of regret that for so long a time man was willing to attribute to supernatural forces all phenomena …

Bulletin No. 311 - Water-Application Efficiencies In Irrigation, Orson W. Israelsen, Wayne D. Criddle, Dean K. Fuhriman, Vaughn E. Hansen

UAES Bulletins

There is today an urgent need for information on how to distribute irrigation water uniformly over land surfaces. Land and water are no longer cheap. Prices of the better irrigated lands in Utah range from $200 to $400 or more per acre, whereas dry farm lands are worth less than $100. Water stock which formerly sold at $25 per share now costs $100, or more. Storage water in the newer reservoirs costs from $30 to $50 per acre-foot, an amount equivalent to $9,000 or more for a full water right to irrigate 100 acres. Because of these high costs of …

Bulletin No. 312 - Cache: A Beardless, Smut-Resistant Winter Wheat, R. W. Woodward, D. C. Tingey

UAES Bulletins

Resistance to dwarf smut is one of the major characteristics sought in the development of any new wheat variety for growing in the Western States. Before the development of resistant varieties, winter wheat losses in northern Utah and adjacent areas resulting from soil-borne dwarf smut were estimated to approach $500,000 annually.

In three principal locations, western Cache, Box Elder, and Juab Counties, Utah Kanred had for years been a good quality, hard red winter wheat variety of high producing ability, but susceptible to smut which in some years almost destroyed the crop. Losses from smut have been greatly reduced in …
