History Of The Reorganization Of Utah's State Administrative Government By The Twenty-Fourth Legislature, Desmond L. Anderson
History Of The Reorganization Of Utah's State Administrative Government By The Twenty-Fourth Legislature, Desmond L. Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the evening of January 13, 1941, Herbert B. Maw, who was then beginning his first term as Governor of the state of Utah, addressed his first legislative message to a joint session of the 1941 Utah Legislature from the rostrum of the chamber of the House of Representatives. An overwhelming amount of the Governor's message was devoted to a multifaceted topic, the reorganization of Utah's state administration.
After extensively deploring state structural and political organization as it existed at that time, Governor Maw declared:
The plan which I shall now propose is a product of the recommendations of the …
Consumptive Use Of Water Studies In The Ashley And Ferron Creek Areas Of Utah, Elden E. Fisher
Consumptive Use Of Water Studies In The Ashley And Ferron Creek Areas Of Utah, Elden E. Fisher
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The inadequacy of water and power supplies in Utah for agriculture, for industry, for domestic and community consumption has retarded the State's economic growth. Shortages of water and hydroelectric power are the principle impediments to the full realization of other potentials of Utah, that is, the full use of its arable lands, the wide and diversified use of its industrial raw materials, and the unrestricted development of its communities. The problem of securing additional sources of water and power has resolved itself into one of major concern. The objective of this study was to determine unit values of consumptive use …
A Cyto-Taxonomic Study Of The Genus Geranium Within The Wasatch Region, Richard J. Shaw
A Cyto-Taxonomic Study Of The Genus Geranium Within The Wasatch Region, Richard J. Shaw
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The western North American species of the genus Geranium have never been satisfactorily clarified. The perennial, indigenous species of this interesting group have been particularly confusing. One important reason for confusion in this group is the fact that the taxonomic problems of the perennial species have never been studied from the genetic point of view. A sound delimitation of specific and subspecific boundaries and phylogenetic relationships cannot be achieved without the application of cyto-genetic principles.
In respect to the cytological phase of this study, the author has placed emphasis on chromosome numbers in order to show evidences for and possible …
An Etiological And Host Range Study Of Celery Mosaic In Utah, Dennis H. Hall
An Etiological And Host Range Study Of Celery Mosaic In Utah, Dennis H. Hall
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Celery mosaic is a virus disease of major economic importance in Utah. In years of severe epiphytotics, it has been a limiting factor in celery production. In 1947 losses due to this disease were estimated to exceed 8 per cent of the total crop. This estimate does not include losses resulting from reduction in grade or from plants discarded in the packing sheds. The celery acreage in Utah dropped from a high of 950 acres in 1946 to 750 acres in 1947 and dropped again in 1948 to 420 acres. Leaders in the industry attributed this reduction in acreage, in …
The Use Of Time Of High School Students Logan, Utah And In Eight Small Western Towns During The Summer Of 1949, Josephine West
The Use Of Time Of High School Students Logan, Utah And In Eight Small Western Towns During The Summer Of 1949, Josephine West
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A considerable number of leaders in education are seriously considering a limited extention of the educational program in the summer. The various churches conduct what are sometimes called vacation schools, some of which are conducted in mountain retreats, where they combine recreation and bible study classes. There is now a law in Utah which permits school districts to levy taxes to pay for organized public recreation programs. An extention of any one or all of these programs into a community should be preceded by a knowledge of the amount of leisure time that is available and the attitude of the …
Harvest Of Wild And Stocked Fish From The Logan River Drainage, Louis S. Pechacek
Harvest Of Wild And Stocked Fish From The Logan River Drainage, Louis S. Pechacek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Logan River, one of Utah's better trout streams, has carried more than its share of the increased fishing pressure of the past few years. Careful management of the drainage by the U.S. Forest Service has kept the Logan River free of serious water fluctuations and relatively unpolluted by silt and wastes. The only noticeable fluctuations in the stream is the annual runoff cycle which usually reaches its peak in May. This alone has contributed greatly to the ability of the river to withstand the increased fishing pressure which it has done quite well. The increase in fishing pressure can …
Leafhoppers (Cicadellidae) Associated With The Stone Fruit Orchards Of Northern Utah, Mervin W. Nielson
Leafhoppers (Cicadellidae) Associated With The Stone Fruit Orchards Of Northern Utah, Mervin W. Nielson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Virus diseases of stone fruit orchards have existed in Utah for more than a quarter of a century and are seriously diminishing the peach and cherry fruit production. Western X of peach, rusty mottle of cherry, wilt and decline of cherry, and little cherry constitute the most economically important stone fruit virus diseases in Utah. Many orchards, particularly in Davis County, have 50 to 83 percent of the trees infected with one or more of the yellow-red viroses. Surveys have shown that the diseases are spreading from 3 to 5 percent each year. It is believed that certain insects are …

A Study Of Tenure And The Orderly Demotion Or Dismisal Of Teachers In The State Of Utah, Sidney L. Wyatt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The problem of this study is to determine, so far as possible, the conditions, reasons, and underlying motives which have led to the dismissal, demotion, or non-issuance of contracts to teachers in the state of Utah during a recent five-year period - 1943-1947, and also what methods have been used in terminating the tenure of those teachers who have been considered undesirable by their employers. The study will seek to reveal the extent to which the professional education associations are influential in determining policies for the dismissal of teachers. It is hoped that from this study some suggestions may emerge …
Farm Organization And Management In Egypt And Utah, Aly A. Morad
Farm Organization And Management In Egypt And Utah, Aly A. Morad
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Agriculture in Egypt is important to the economic structure of the country today as it was during the ancient days of Joseph and the Pharoahs, which dates back more than 3,500 years. As for Utah, agriculture is still important to the economic structure of the state as it was a hundred years ago in the days of Brigham Young and the Pioneers. These two statements should not hide the fact that the importance of agriculture to the economic structure of the two areas is diminishing. Since these ancient days, new techniques and methods have been introduced and used in agriculture. …
The Demand For And Consumption Of Fluid Milk In Logan, Utah, 1949, Edwin B. Jones
The Demand For And Consumption Of Fluid Milk In Logan, Utah, 1949, Edwin B. Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dairying is one of the most important agricultural enterprises in Utah. Income from the sale of dairy products by farmers within the state comprises about fifteen percent of the total farm income. Milk and its products are an essential part of the diet of practically all consumers. Its widespread use makes it a commodity that should receive special consideration and study. The continued growth of the industry depends upon how well it can meet the demands of the consumer in supplying quality dairy products at reasonable prices. The problems that need particular attention to bring about continued growth are efficient …

Inheritance Of Certain Characters And The Linkage Relationships Of Factors On Chromosome Iv In Barley, Claude J. Jenkins
Inheritance Of Certain Characters And The Linkage Relationships Of Factors On Chromosome Iv In Barley, Claude J. Jenkins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Plant breeding and the development of new or better varieties of plants are essential parts of modern agronomy, horticulture and forestry. The basis for such improvement is a knowledge of the factors and principles of genetics.
A number of genetic studies have been made with barley in recent years. This is partly because of the commercial importance of the crop, and partly because of the many distinct heritable characters of barley plants. The cultivated species of barley offers the plant breeder and geneticist a wealth of material for genetic studies. Varieties differ in a great many readily distinguishable characters, species …
Establishing Criteria For The Pre-Service Selection Of Teachers With Special Application To The Utah State Agricultural College, Howard H. Barron
Establishing Criteria For The Pre-Service Selection Of Teachers With Special Application To The Utah State Agricultural College, Howard H. Barron
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Our American culture and civilization depends in large measure upon the recruiting of the right kind of men and women to be teachers in our American schools and colleges. All professions depend on effective teaching for their life blood. Many educators and colleges during the past few years have become concerned with pre-service selection methods for improving the teaching personnel. This concern has become somewhat intensified at the present time, largely as a result of four factors. One factor is the large number of returning servicemen, who are turning to teaching as a career. A second factor is improved salaries …
Attitude Of Utah Farm People Toward The Extension Service In Utah, Stephen L. Brower
Attitude Of Utah Farm People Toward The Extension Service In Utah, Stephen L. Brower
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Cooperative Extension Service in agriculture and home economics was established on a national basis in 1914 by the passage of the Smith-Lever Act. The act stated, in broad non-restrictive terms, that the major purpose of cooperative extension work was "to aid in diffusing among the people of the United States useful and practical information on subjects related to agriculture and home economics, and to encourage the application of the same." Thus the primary function of the Cooperative Extension Service in agriculture and home economics is education.
A Study Of The Courses That The Physical Education Major Professional Graduates, From 1939 To 1947, Inclusive, Used To Fill Their Group Requirements At The Utah State Agricultural College, Ted Heath
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Prior to the year 1913, there had been some schools at the Utah State Agricultural College that had had biological science, exact science, language and arts, and social science groups for the graduates to fill requirements in before they could graduate from these particular schools.
However, it was not until the year 1913 that all of the schools, with the exception of the engineering school, were required to make the students meet these basic group requirements.
An Examination Of Union-Management Relations In The Garland Plant Of The Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, Theral V. Bishop
An Examination Of Union-Management Relations In The Garland Plant Of The Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, Theral V. Bishop
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The problems presented in Union-Management Relations affect the whole economy. When collective bargaining breaks down and economic warfare, in the form of strikes or lockouts, results between industry and labor, the effects reach far beyond the two parties immediately concerned. Strikes in industries, such as the Coal or Steel Industries, impose depressive imprint upon every segment of the economy. even in purely regional industry the effects of labor dispute spawned shutdowns cannot be isolated to the parties directly involved. Therefore, any efforts that seek to find and remove causes of Union-Management conflict are worth while and should be encouraged. This …
An Economic Analysis Of The Possible Implications Of The Abolition Of The Basing Point System Of Pricing On The Steel Industry In Utah, Lester T. Hansen
An Economic Analysis Of The Possible Implications Of The Abolition Of The Basing Point System Of Pricing On The Steel Industry In Utah, Lester T. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The production of iron in America began in a limited area east of the Alleghenies, centered around Philadelphia, which was also a principal port of entry for foreign iron. As early as 1750, pricing was done on a rudimentary basing point structure. Apparently, all prices on domestic iron were quoted on a Philadelphia base and were higher in the outlying territory where the iron was actually made. The manufacturers absorbed freight in order to move their iron to the central market, where it competed with foreign iron.

Inheritance Of Resistance To Six Races Of Bunt, To Awns And Kernel Color In A Wheat Cross, Marr D. Simons
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wheat is the most important cereal crop of the world, and one of the most serious diseases affecting it over much of its range is covered smut or bunt (57). The word "bunt", according to Heald (48), is a contraction of an old English term, "burnt ear", which fittingly describes the ravages of covered smut.
Man's first knowledge of this disease is lost in antiquity, but it was first recorded by early Greek writers (97). Gaines (39), writing in 1928, stated that since 1924 stinking smut had been the most destructive parasite of wheat in America, causing losses of as …

Hive And Field Mortality Of Honey Bees In Northern Utah Due To Effects Of Certain Ecological And Chemical Factors, Shih Chun Ma
Hive And Field Mortality Of Honey Bees In Northern Utah Due To Effects Of Certain Ecological And Chemical Factors, Shih Chun Ma
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The honey bee is the most important pollinating insect in Utah, because various important crops such as fruits, legumes, and vegetable seed crops depend chiefly on it for pollination. In the past, honey bees have suffered repeated severe death losses through contact with arsenic and other agricultural chemicals. Recently the newer insecticides, such as DDT, chlordane, parathion, benzene hexachloride, lindane, toxaphene, and several kinds of miticides have further complicated the problem of bee survival. In addition, natural enemies such as predators and parasites and some unfavorable environmental conditions, including unfavorable temperature and humidity, wind, storm, and other changeable weather conditions, …

The Franklin Basin branch is the main contributing tributary while the Beaver Creek branch is nearly as large.
Some Factors Which May Influence Survival Of Game Farm-Reared Pheasants After Release Into The Wild, Taylor F. Cottle
Some Factors Which May Influence Survival Of Game Farm-Reared Pheasants After Release Into The Wild, Taylor F. Cottle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine some of the factors which may influence the survival of Utah game farm-reared pheasants following their release into the wild. The survival of these birds is below the desired level after they are released, as is indicated by the low percentage taken by the sportsmen during the hunting season. In recent years the return from released game farm-reared pheasants is about 7 to 8 percent.1 Consequently, if survival rate of these birds could be increased, more birds would be available to supplement the wild stock. Also, an increase in the …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study deals with the program, personnel, and physical plant of the Utah State Industrial School. Studies made of the school are few. Among them, the Survey made by John Schapps, Field Consultant of the National Probation Association, between January and July, 1946, is probably the most comprehensive and professional in nature. Since Mr. Schapps's study began only three months after Mr. Parley Kilburn was appointed superintendent, this investigator covered conditions mainly as they were under the old administration. This study aims at comparison of conditions, facilities and programs as they existed in 1947 and 1949 with those found by …
