Bulletin No. 356 - Consumer Demand For Fruit: Salt Lake City, Utah, 1948-1949, Ellis W. Lamborn, Roice H. Anderson Aug 1952

Bulletin No. 356 - Consumer Demand For Fruit: Salt Lake City, Utah, 1948-1949, Ellis W. Lamborn, Roice H. Anderson

UAES Bulletins

In a free enterprise economy where production and consumption are adjusted through the medium of prices, consumers direct the kinds and amounts of production through their choices in the market. The problems of production and marketing of any product cannot be effectively solved without studying the wishes and actions of consumers.

To ignore the decisions of consumers is economic suicide. No one can long continue to produce who does not find buyers for his product. The producers who give the consumers what they want, in the form and at the time they want it, and at a price they are …

Bulletin No. 355 - An Economic Study Of The Production Of Canning Tomatoes In Utah, 1948 And 1949, Earnest M. Morrison, George T. Blanch Aug 1952

Bulletin No. 355 - An Economic Study Of The Production Of Canning Tomatoes In Utah, 1948 And 1949, Earnest M. Morrison, George T. Blanch

UAES Bulletins

Production of canning tomatoes is an important enterprise on many farms in Utah. In 1949 this crop brought about $1,772,000 and in 1951, nearly $2,750,000 to the farmers of the state (appendix table 1). Nearly all the canning tomatoes of the state are produced in the counties at the west of the Wasatch Mountains. In order of importance, these are: Davis, Weber, Utah, Box Elder, and Salt Lake (appendix table 2). Since tomatoes are processed relatively close to where they are grown, the income to farmers is not a complete measure of the importance of the tomato enterprise to this …

Bulletin No. 353 - Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On Yield And Protein Content Of Winter Wheat In Utah, Howard B. Peterson Jun 1952

Bulletin No. 353 - Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On Yield And Protein Content Of Winter Wheat In Utah, Howard B. Peterson

UAES Bulletins

Winter what is one of the major crops of Utah. For more than 50 years winter wheat has been grown on the dry lands of the state. It is about the only crop grown on these lands under the usual alternate cropping and fallow system. Since 1941 acreage in the state has increased about 60 percent. Little or no manure is applied and only occasionally is a legume green manure turned under. It is apparent that with the original low supply of nitrogen in most of the soils of the state, together with the depleting effects of the common cropping …

Bulletin No. 354 - Marketing Of Chickens From Producer To First Handler Washington, Oregon, And Utah (1948-1949), Roice H. Anderson Jun 1952

Bulletin No. 354 - Marketing Of Chickens From Producer To First Handler Washington, Oregon, And Utah (1948-1949), Roice H. Anderson

UAES Bulletins

In 1949 the receipts from eggs and chickens amounted to 8.6, 6.0, and 13.2 percent of the total cash receipts from farm marketings in Washington, Oregon, and Utah, respectively. About three fourths of these receipts were from sale of eggs and one fourth from the sale of chickens. Receipts from chicken sales, while less important than from eggs, amounted to about 21.5 million dollars in 1949 in the three states. As would be expected, considering the importance of egg production in the three states, many of the chickens sold are cull layers and other chickens produced incidental to the egg …

The Teaching Of Science, Sherwin Maeser May 1952

The Teaching Of Science, Sherwin Maeser

Faculty Honor Lectures

Like to teach! Whether with the expectant, half-frightened freshman, the senior, worried about his preparation now that . he must get out and meet competition, or the graduate student interested in new discoveries, I like to work with all of them.

I have been teaching a long time now. As has always been the case when one generation is thinking of turning over its work to the next, I am glad to have the opportunity to talk about some of the things that I consider important in this job of teaching.

The most varied and the most acute problems of …

The principal objectives of this bulletin are stated as follows: ( 1) to trace the development of livestock marketing in the West and to ascertain the economic conditions responsible for shifts in the total volume of production and marketings of the several types of meat animals sold, and the relative importance of the various marketing agencies used by farmers …

The Effect Of Radioactive Phosphorus On The Histology Of The Rat Testis, Robert H. Peterson May 1952

The Effect Of Radioactive Phosphorus On The Histology Of The Rat Testis, Robert H. Peterson

Biology

The first account of radiation damage to male germinal tissue was published in 1903 by Albers-Schoenberg, and stated only that rabbits were made sterile by repeated exposure to X-ray irradiation. By 1925 numerous papers (Blanc, 1906; Barratt and Arnold, 1912; and Schinz and Slotopolsky, 1925) discussing the histological and cytological effects of irradiation on the testis had appeared. In 1928 Lacassagne, Lattes, and Fournier, using uranium x as an external source of beta radiation, reported damage to the testis of the same nature as that caused by X-ray irradiation (2). Within a few years internal irradiation of testis tissue was …

Histology Of Rat Adrenal, Liver, And Kidney Following Intraperitoneal Injection Of Phosphorus 32, A. Earl Johnson

Biology

Radioactive materials and isotopes, since their introduction at the first of the century, have been invaluable tools in many fiends of research. Physiology and its related fields are among those receiving maximum benefit from the versatile tools. Fresh light has been shed on numerous heretofore insoluble problems with the coincidental introduction of new problems by the score. Foremost among these problems are the fundamental effects on individual tissues produced by radioactive materials. Before research with these valuale instruments can be exploited to its fullest extent, these basic effects must be determined. This study is an attempt to determine the histological …

Effects Of Temperature And Light On The Mass Rearing Of The Geminate Leafhopper, Colladonus Geminatus (Van D.), Walter H. A. Wilde May 1952

Effects Of Temperature And Light On The Mass Rearing Of The Geminate Leafhopper, Colladonus Geminatus (Van D.), Walter H. A. Wilde

Biology

Mass rearing experiments with Colladonus geminatus ( Van D.) conducted in an experimental greenhouse laboratory from January 30, 1952, to April 18, 1952, indicated light had important breeding effects on C. geminatus, the geminate leafhopper. A light intensity of forty foot-candles provided by a 100 watt incandescent bulb for a period of 16 hours daily was the most effective of the three light intensities and the three heat ranges tried. It was found in the expirimental cages that light had the effect of speeding up the development of the new leaf hopper generation, progeny of the overwintering adults from …

Experimental Infections With Eimeria Zurnii In Calves, Rulan S. Hansen May 1952

Experimental Infections With Eimeria Zurnii In Calves, Rulan S. Hansen

Biology

Bovine coccidiosis is an infectious disease, commonly called bloody scours or red diarrhea, that sometimes causes heavy losses among calves. It is of great economic importance in many parts of the world, including the United States. An economic loss of an estimated 10 million dollars occurs annually in the United States as a result of bovine coccidiosis.(2) It is known that Eimeria zurnii Rivolta, 1878, is one of the 2 most pathogenic species of coccidia in cattle. At present little information is available on this species. Further information concerning E. zurnii would be of value in establishing sound prophylactic measures …

The History Of The New Jersey-Logan Academy, 1878-1934, Harold Y. S. Loo May 1952

The History Of The New Jersey-Logan Academy, 1878-1934, Harold Y. S. Loo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The story of Presbyterianism begins, in general, with the story of Protestantism. Not many years after Luther's action in Wittenburg began a spiritual reformation, two men--Calvin and Knox--shared in the new form of Protestantism which was to come under the name of Presbyterianism. Largely by way of Scotland and England this denomination of Christianity moved into America early in the 17th century. When the United States government was formed officially in 1789, one man--John Witherspoon--was highly instrumental in the form adopted. Witherspoon was also a leader of the Presbyterian Church, and in that one year of 1789 he helped to …

Affect Of Specified Factors On 1951 Farm Prices Of Utah Peaches, William N. Capener May 1952

Affect Of Specified Factors On 1951 Farm Prices Of Utah Peaches, William N. Capener

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Utah ranked nineteenth in the United States in the production of peaches for a ten year period 1940-49, producing 1.2 percent of the national total. Peach production is an important part of Utah's fruit industry. The 1951 peach crop estimated at 800,000 bushels, valued at $1,520,000 represents 32 percent of the value of all the fruit grown in Utah and 0.8 percent of the value of all agricultural commodities grown in the state.
