Studies Into Some Physiological Relationships Between Dodder (Cuscuta, Spp.) And Alfalfa, Harold Edward Pattee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years the weed commonly known as dodder has become an important reason for the rejection of several alfalfa seed fields for certification in Utah. The rapid spread of infestation in alfalfa seed fields, difficulty in removing the dodder seed from the alfalfa seed due to the similarity in size, and a lack of adequate control are among the main causes for the rising concern with dodder, Dodder is an annual which reproduces from seed each year.

The Effect Of The Method Of Irrigation And Fertilizer Application On The Movement Of Nitrates In The Soil, Lavoir A. Banks May 1960

The Effect Of The Method Of Irrigation And Fertilizer Application On The Movement Of Nitrates In The Soil, Lavoir A. Banks

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is generally recognized that one of the most important factors limiting crop production is soil nitrogen. Farmers today are using more nitrogen fertilizers than ever before. All indications show that this usage will probably continue to increase. With the expanded use of nitrogen, it has become desirable to increase the efficiency from nitrogen fertilizers. One factor which will affect the efficiency is the position of the nitrogen in the soil in relation to the plant roots.

A Study Of The Parasites From Rainbow Trout Of A Commercial Fish Farm In Cache Valley, Utah, Kenneth L. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the biennial period July 1, 1956 to June 30, 1958 the 12 state fish hatcheries in Utah produced and stocked in the waters of the state 20,092,902 fish weighing a total of 1,528,787 pounds, at a cost varying between 69 and 75 cents per pound. The cost figure depends upon what expenditures are included (Don Andriano, 1960). A substantial mortality occurs at the fish hatcheries in the state of Utah. The determination of the cause of any given loss is complicated by a number of factors. This is especially true of losses which may be due secondarily to parasites …

As the value of the channel catfish, as a game fish, increased, it has become increasingly important to the state to maintain this species for present and future generations. This study was initiated in 1958 and completed in 1960, and was financed by the Utah State Department of Fish and Game. …

The Effects Of Flouride Ion On Some Blood Constituents Of Rainbow Trout, Salmo Gairdneri, Linnaeus, Richard H. Alger May 1960

The Effects Of Flouride Ion On Some Blood Constituents Of Rainbow Trout, Salmo Gairdneri, Linnaeus, Richard H. Alger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past quarter of a century there has been considerable investigation into the effects of fluorides on living organisms. It has been well established, as a result of these studies, that both small and elevated amounts of fluorides present in the environment may have a marked toxic effect upon gaining entry into the organism. Much of the research involving fluorides and the living organism has been confined to experimentation with animals, although considerable evidence indicates that plants are also subject to injury if fluorides are present in the atmosphere or the soil.

The great majority of the research dealing …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Evapotranspiration has been defined as the combination of evaporation of water from the soil surface and transpiration of water by vegetation. If the ground is well covered by plants, most of the water is lost by transpiration of water directly from the plant tissue, rather than by evaporation of water directly from the soil surface. The term consumptive use is synonymous with evapotranspiration.

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian May 1960

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Molybdenum may function as a catalyst in promoting and controlling some of the complex chemical reactions that go on in living systems. The lack of understanding which exists about these reactions is due to their obvious complexity and to the extremely minute quantities of molybdenum involved. Traces of molybdenum have been shown to have spectacular results on the growth of plants when added to certain soils. This metal is also required for the growth of azobacter, the nitrogen-fixing bacteria (1).

Molybdenum has been shown to be present in four enzymes: nitrate reductase (2), hydrogenase (3), xanthine oxidase (4) and aldehyde …

The Effect Of Feeding Various Levels Of Fluoride To Dairy Cattle On Their Pepsin Activity, Hassan Sabeti-Rahmati

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In certain industrial areas fluorides are present in various amounts in the atmosphere. These fluorides are liberated by industrial processes at high temperature in treatment of materials containing fluoride, either as a natural impurity, or as added material for technical purposes. Equipment and procedures have been installed in many plants to reduce the output of fluorides significantly, yet forage and hay grown near the plants may contain elevated amounts of fluorides. The feeding of such material to young livestock for many months may cause fluorosis or chronic fluoride poisoning. Some springs contain a high concentration of fluorides and the continuous …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Incoming freshman students are confronted early in their college career with the problem of selecting a program of study that fits their needs, capacities and interests. Counselors and advisors have found that a large number of students do not give prior deliberation to the selection of a major field of study. For the most part, students use a trial and error method in making their choices. That is, their choice is a result of success in previous class work. Although some effort is being made by educational personnel to resolve this problem, a large amount of objective research remains to …

The Inhibitory Effects Of Tarweed Upon The Germination And Growth Of Seedlings, Glenn F. Carnahan May 1960

The Inhibitory Effects Of Tarweed Upon The Germination And Growth Of Seedlings, Glenn F. Carnahan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extensive areas of potentially productive but depleted range land in the United States are occupied by a weed commonly known aa cluster tarweed (Madia glomerata). Moat attempts at seeding these areas to useful forage plants have resulted in failure. Many of these failures have been attributed to the vigorous competitive growth of tarweed plants. More recent observations of seedings in tarweed areas and laboratory work at the University of Utah indicate that tarweed is not only a strong competitor but may also produce substances which inhibit the germination and growth of other species of plants.

Studies In Iron Chlorosis Of Leaves, Narayan Gunderao Perur May 1960

Studies In Iron Chlorosis Of Leaves, Narayan Gunderao Perur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Normal healthy growth and development of plants is controlled by certain factors known as factors of plant growth. They are soil, climate, and plant inheritance. The soil contains many nutrient elements needed by plants both in macro and micro quantities. Iron is one of the essential elements required by plants in small amounts.

When plants are starving for any of the essential nutrients, characteristic symptoms usually appear as certain abnormalities, discoloration and deformation of leaves, fruits, and other parts. The deficiency symptoms, though not easily recognizable in some cases at the beginning, are quite apparent in advanced stages of plant …

A Political Study Of Federal Aid To Education At Utah State University, Richard Yates Merrell May 1960

A Political Study Of Federal Aid To Education At Utah State University, Richard Yates Merrell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the present-day world of change, every time we pick up the paper we read of something new in our society. We now have new rockets, new satellites, new computers, and new methods or destruction. There are also many "new" things in the field of education. One of these is federal aid to education. As yet, there seems to be no consensus on the merits of this supposedly new approach to educational finance. Some view it as a kind or plague; others see it as an unmixed blessing. Actually, federal aid to education is quite old and quite common.

A Comparison Of Daughters Of Sires In Artificial Breeding At Different Levels Of Management, Richard C. Cook May 1960

A Comparison Of Daughters Of Sires In Artificial Breeding At Different Levels Of Management, Richard C. Cook

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the largest problems facing the successful dairyman of today is selection of proper sires to mate to his high producing cows. Many breeders and dairymen have the impression that proven sires will give the same increase in production regardless of the dam's production or the level of environment present. Even though sires come from high producing herds, some as high as 600 pounds of butterfat, the average production of all cows in the state of Utah remains at a much lower figure. The average for all cows in Utah is about 250 pounds of butterfat and the average …
