A Study Of The Relationship Of Potassium Accumulation To Metabolism In A Sodium Rich Yeast, Thomas H. Strunk May 1962

A Study Of The Relationship Of Potassium Accumulation To Metabolism In A Sodium Rich Yeast, Thomas H. Strunk

Biology

Physiological phenomena such as glandular secretion, intestinal and tubular absorption, nervous activity and bioelectric potentials are all closely related to the movement of sodium (Na) and potassium (K) across cell membranes. The movement of the ionic forms of Na and K across biological membranes has been of special interest to investigators because the movements fail to conform to the predictions of diffusion and thermodynamic law (35). This behavior has been referred to as active transport when the following conditions are met: i) the transport exceeds or is opposite to that to be expected from electrochemical gradients; ii) the transport depends …

Phenotypic Expression And Genetic Analysis Of A New Drosophila Melanogaster Mutant (Eyes-Reduced) Exhibiting A Structural Eye Abnormality, James W. Edwards May 1962

Phenotypic Expression And Genetic Analysis Of A New Drosophila Melanogaster Mutant (Eyes-Reduced) Exhibiting A Structural Eye Abnormality, James W. Edwards

Biology

During experiments involving the addition of copper sulfate to the food medium (Turner, 1959), some flies from the tu150/Cy strain of Drosophila melanogaster exhibited a structural eye abnormality. By inbreeding those flies a new mutant stock was developed. Phenotypically the flies of this new stock resembled the established fourth chromosome eyeless mutants of D. melanogaster, and the new mutant was tentatively designated as eyeless-prime (ey'). Turner described the morphology of ey', and he also superficially investigated the genetic basis of the trait. The purpose of this investigation was to locate the genes associated with …

Biology And Control Of The Rose Stem Girdler, Agrilus Rubicola Communis Obenb., On Raspberry, Nuggehalli N. Raghuvir

Biology

The first red raspberries were cultivated in Europe 400 years ago. They were grown for the first time in the United States some time before 1800 (Gourley and Howlett, 1941). The cultivation of raspberries is limited largely to the northern part of the United States, chiefly in the cool, temperate areas. Areas from which extensive quantities of red raspberry are shipped are located in southern New Jersey, in the Hudson river valley, in western Michigan, in the Puyallup valley of Washington, and near Sebastopol, Washington.

Genetic And Physiological Mechanisms Associated With Certain Eye Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Afton M. Hansen May 1962

Genetic And Physiological Mechanisms Associated With Certain Eye Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Afton M. Hansen

Biology

A large number of flies expressing an eye abnormality was observed during the sunmer of 1960 in a "wild" Cockaponsett stock. A review of environmental conditions showed that the temperature had risen to 30 C on several days before the abnormal eyes were detected. Some of the abnormalities resembled certain expressions of known mutants such as lobe and tumorous head. Lobe eyes are reduced and flattened anteriorly, whereas the new abnormal eye is not usually reduced, but is flattened ventrally. The tumorous head phenotype is characterized by abnormal growths in the entire head region, but the new abnormality is usually …

The Price Of Prejudice, Leonard J. Arrington May 1962

The Price Of Prejudice, Leonard J. Arrington

Faculty Honor Lectures

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor December 7,1941, about 127,000 persons of Japanese descent were living in the United States, of whom more than 112,000 were on the Pacific Coast. These could be conveniently divided into three groups: the Issei or immigrants born in Japan; the Nisei or American-born, American-educated children of the Issei;' and the Kibei, who were born in America but received some of their education in Japan.

Permanently excluded from becoming American citizens by United States law, and seriously limited in their ability to acquire agricultural and residential property by alien land laws, the 40,000 Issei had …

The Entomological Aspects Of Seed Chalcid Bruchophagus Roddi Gussakovsii Resistance In Alfalfas, Wayne A. Rowley May 1962

The Entomological Aspects Of Seed Chalcid Bruchophagus Roddi Gussakovsii Resistance In Alfalfas, Wayne A. Rowley

Biology

The alfalfa seed chalcid has been recognized as an important pest of alfalfa seed since 1891 (Urbahns, 1920). Heavy concentrations of seed chalcid in the alfalfa seed producing regions of the western United States pose a serious threat to the production of alfalfa seed. Experiments designed to study bionomics and plant resistance of this pest are part of a regional project at the Experiment Stations of many western universities. Several states and workers are testing a number of chemicals for possible use in controlling the alfalfa seed chalcid.

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler May 1962

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler

Faculty Honor Lectures

Even in such a wide-ranging and eternally changing field as biology, a few statements about certain aspects can be made with a minimum likelihood of their being refuted. In this class are the following: No two lakes are identical. Any given lake is simultaneously many things to many people. A lake is never static. The influence of a lake reaches far beyond its shores.

Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, can be used to good advantage to exemplify the truth of these statements. It defies meaningful comparison with other lakes unless a mass of detailed statistics is employed. To the fisherman and water …

In the teaching of woodwind instruments, the inherent differences of these instruments with regard to tone production, pitch characteristics and technical problems, make it imperative for the instructor to have an intimate knowledge of these factors. Through actual demonstration by the teacher, the student is made closely aware of the multiple difficulties involved in woodwind instrument performance. It was the writer's purpose in the recital to demonstrate the characteristic tone quality and basic technical facility on each of the major woodwind instruments in addition to some of the standard repertoire for these instruments.

This investigation was devoted to a study of food availability and the selective utilization by juvenile mallards (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos L.) from hatching through the flight stage. Such information furnishes basic knowledge which may be used for determining the effects of chemical poisons on these organisms, how breeding ground habitats could be manipulated for their most efficient use by duckling species, what nutrients occur in natural duckling foods, and the digestibility of these items. The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah, was used as the study area during the waterfowl breeding seasons of 1959, 1960, and 1961. Mallard ducklings …

European Economic Integration And American Business Strategy, Paul Andrykowsky May 1962

European Economic Integration And American Business Strategy, Paul Andrykowsky

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The term “economic integration” recently has been used for various forms of economic cooperation. Many writers have tried to give a working definition of it, but a review of the literature does not show any generally accepted definition. The term is used for several degrees of economic cooperation; harmonization; trade agreements; tariff-agreements; advanced forms of cooperation like tariff communities, customs communities, customs unions, free trade areas, common markets, monetary unions; and complete economic unions. Integration furthermore has been split into sector and total integration and has been determined by various criteria. Thus, it is very difficult to judge where economic …

Forage Yield And Plant Stand Intensity Of Nine Alfalfa Varieties In Relation To Nine Rates Of Seeding And Bacterial Wilt Resistance, Hamid Auda May 1962

Forage Yield And Plant Stand Intensity Of Nine Alfalfa Varieties In Relation To Nine Rates Of Seeding And Bacterial Wilt Resistance, Hamid Auda

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In growing alfalfa it is important to obtain a good initial stand. However, it is difficult to predict the exact amount of seed necessary to insure a good stand.

There are about 220,000 seeds in 1 pound of alfalfa seed, or enough for four to five seeds per square foot at the rate of 1 pound of seed per acre. If every seed should grow, 2 to 3 pounds of seed per acre would be sufficient for a good stand.

However, there are many hazards. Some seeds are not viable, and others are planted too deep or too shallow to …

The Cost Of Owning And Operating Farm Power And Machinery Used In Tillage Operations On Diversified Farms In Selected Areas Of Utah, 1960, Clynn Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A current problem facing farmers is, how much should they mechanize their farm perations? As the relative price and productivity of factors change farmers usually have to adjust their operations to assure maximum profits. Technological advances often change the relative productiveness and the price of machinery. These changes have caused the progressive farmer to continually review his farm organization and make adjustments in levels of factor use. If he is to produce at maximum profits it is necessary that his machinery investment be in proper adjustment with other resources.

Because of the rapid advancements being made in the field of knowledge, educators, as well as those in other fields, must periodically take inventory. Current practices, policies, and methods must be carefully scrutinized to determine if they are the most effective. The group or class method of instruction is one such area.

A Study Of Sprinkler Uniformity Evaluation Methods, Baha Dabbous

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The use of water in homes, on farms, by factories, and for recreational purposes has been increasing rapidly. Water use has doubled in the last three decades. By 1980, water use is expected to be double the current use. In arid and semi-arid regions, the practice of successful profit-yielding agriculture often depends on irrigation. Irrigation is, in turn, dependent upon a water supply which is limited. The highest possible efficiency should be maintained if maximum utilization of the available water resources for irrigation is desired. Sprinkler irrigation allows, among other things, high water application efficiencies with good distribution uniformities.

Student Teacher Attitudes Toward Child Aggression And Dependency In A Child Development Laboratory, Kristine Halls Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A child development laboratory in a university finds its first justification in its ability to contribute to the education of college students. After this justification has been established, the laboratory has a responsibility for serving the children enrolled in it.

The Child Development Laboratory at Utah State University serves college students in several ways. Students are able to observe and participate in the nursery school laboratory through experiences in various courses. The culmination of their course work comes when, as juniors or seniors, they do student teaching in the nursery school.

Some of the purposes the nursery school attempts to …

Differences In Frustration Reactions Of Nursery School Children, Sharon Marshall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study of frustration has been of interest to various people including psychiatrists, psychologists, and educators for a number of years. These people have been interested in frustration because the complexity of our modern life has involved so many frustrating experiences. Frustration has been defined by Dollard (8, p. 7) as "an interference with the occurrence of an instigated goal response at its proper time." Ruch (21, p. 151) defined frustration as "the denial or thwarting by some obstacle which lies between a need and its goal." These two definitions are in essence identical. The average person has many obstacles …
