Programs Of Guidance And Counseling As They Relate To Young People And Their Preparation For Work, William E. Mortimer Jun 1965

Programs Of Guidance And Counseling As They Relate To Young People And Their Preparation For Work, William E. Mortimer

Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Faculty Publications

There is evidence on every hand that one of the important needs in present day and future education is good guidance and counseling. Although some guidance and counseling programs have been in operation for many years, only recently have they blossomed forth into the significant place in education which they now occupy. The rapid growth has brought about numerous problems, many of which are yet unsolved. Among these important unsolved problems are the following: What are the real duties and responsibilities of counselors? Is vocational guidance receiving its proper emphasis? How well informed about vocations are the counselors and how …

Graphical Solutions To Frequently Encountered Fluid Flow Problems, Roland W. Jeppson Jun 1965

Graphical Solutions To Frequently Encountered Fluid Flow Problems, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

Introduction

Graphical methods are often used by engineers to solve frequently used or complex formulas which require trial and error solutions. Perhaps the best known graphical tool used by the engineer is the slide rule, but anyone familiar with its use will recognize its limitations both in time and accuracy. For many problems which involve many repetitive computations high speed digital or analog computers are the most effective tools for solution. There are, however, many problems requiring considerable engineering time for slide rule solutions where solutions are not justifiable on computers. The use of nomograms for such problems is desirable. …

The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal May 1965

The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Throughout the history of mankind there always have been famines, disease, and poverty in some parts of the world, and this has been because of economic under - development to a great extent. For nearly a century after the publication of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" in 1776, economic development was the main interest of economists . In the late nineteenth century, Europe, America, and Australia were developing rapidly and few people were interested in raising the incomes of Africans, Arabs, and Asians . Most of the countries in Africa and Asia were under European colonial rule, and being so, …

A Study Of Insects Attacking Douglas-Fir Cones In Cache National Forest Utah, Jerald E. Dewey May 1965

A Study Of Insects Attacking Douglas-Fir Cones In Cache National Forest Utah, Jerald E. Dewey

Biology

Insects that destroy the seeds of forest trees have an important bearing on reforestation. If a high percentage of a seed crop is destroyed in any year, seed collecting may be unprofitable, and nursery establishment and planting will be greatly hampered. A loss of seed may seriously threaten the natural re-establishment of commercially valuable tree species particularly on turned or cutover lands, where timing of seeding may be highly critical (Keen, 1958). Douglas-fir is one of this country's most valuable timber trees. Presently in the western United States about 24 million acres of commercial forest land are classified as Douglas-fir …

A Genetic Study Of A Nonpupating, Melanotic Tumorous Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Gary V. Petersen May 1965

A Genetic Study Of A Nonpupating, Melanotic Tumorous Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Gary V. Petersen

Biology

Melanotic tumor formation and failure of pupation have been reported in a tumorous head stock of Drosophila melanogaster. The lethal effect has been correlated with stretching of the salivary gland chromosomes near the chromocenter and changes in the puffing patterns of the chromosomes (Rodman, 1963, 1964). The genetic basis of this phenomenon has not been elucidated however.

Uterine, Ovarian And Adrenal Proteases In The Normally Cycling And Pseudopregnant Rat, Royal Allen Rich May 1965

Uterine, Ovarian And Adrenal Proteases In The Normally Cycling And Pseudopregnant Rat, Royal Allen Rich

Biology

The complex endocrine involvement with the reproductive process was all but unknown until the second decade of the present century. The first biologically active steroid was isolated in 1929. This accomplishment encouraged many investigators in the field of reproductive physiology. The untiring efforts of these scientists provided the foundation upon which current investigators continue to develop our understanding of the reproductive process.

Direct Effects Of Irradiation On The Biosynthesis Of Androgens By Testicular Tissue, C. Gordon Simpson May 1965

Direct Effects Of Irradiation On The Biosynthesis Of Androgens By Testicular Tissue, C. Gordon Simpson

Biology

The increased usage of various types and sources of radiation in medicine and space explorations merits a closer examination of the effects of ionizing radiations on living matter. Although considerable research has been conducted in this field, many problems still remain unsolved. Of the many studies on the effects of radiation on the mammalian organism, very little information is available as to the effects of this treatment on the endocrine aspects of the testes. The objective of this investigation is to ascertain if irradiation has an immediate and direct effect on steroidogenesis by the testes.

Seasonal Movements And Habitats Of Chipmunks (Eutamias) In Montana, David L. Martinsen May 1965

Seasonal Movements And Habitats Of Chipmunks (Eutamias) In Montana, David L. Martinsen

Biology

Since most small mammals are nocturnal or secretive in their habits, the use of indirect methods, such as live trapping, has been necessary to study their activities. Given a network of traps, the assumption basic to all capture-mark-recapture studies is that the traps do not markedly interfere with the normal activities of the animal. An important corollary would be that the frequency of capture in any area reflects the intensity of use of that area by the animal. Some workers have obtained results which cast doubt on the validity of these assumptions (Hayne, 1949), yet other studies support their worth …

The Developmental Expression Of Tumorous Head In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lewis M. Mulkay May 1965

The Developmental Expression Of Tumorous Head In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lewis M. Mulkay

Biology

This study has been undertaken to determine the developmental sequence of the tumorous head phenotype from its first expression in the late first instar larva or early second instar larva as reported by Thelander (1950), to the form taken by such growths in the adult fly as reported by Newby (1949). Because Thelander did not determine the specific time of first expression, a part of the present problem was to determine that time as precisely as possible. It was hoped that serial sectioning of the larval forms would allow a pattern of development to be formulated and a mechanism of …

Graduate Recital, Ronald L. Wooden May 1965

Graduate Recital, Ronald L. Wooden

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The opportunity to select and perform qualified musical literature on a graduate recital offers the individual music teacher a challenge that is commensurate with the duties of his profession. A major responsibility of the music educator is the selection, rehearsal, and performance of the best possible literature that will meet the educational aesthetic needs of his particular performing group. It could be said that one of the most potent factors in preserving and expanding the musical culture of our society is the part played in it by the music educator and his wisdom and choice that he displays with this …

Commitments In Marriage, Don C. Carter May 1965

Commitments In Marriage, Don C. Carter

Faculty Honor Lectures

Man always faces the future with institutions which are products of the past and which must continually be modified to meet the changing needs of the present and the emerging future. The changes taking place in today's world are particularly rapid and dramatic, and they provide an unprecedented challenge to society. The family, as one of man's enduring institutions, has repeatedly been faced with the need for modification in response to changes in society, and today faces what may be its most severe test. However, Hill (1964) has concluded that our society is far from the most hostile social order …

Graduate Recital, Thomas Gordon Nelson May 1965

Graduate Recital, Thomas Gordon Nelson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The prospect of presenting a recital was very exciting to the author for two reasons. First, in spite of the fact that he has been associated with music as a performer and teacher-conductor for twenty years, this writer has participated in only one formal solo recital situation. This was a performance of Morceau Symphonic, to complete requirements of a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brigham Young University, and was prepared with little formal supervision. The second, which is directly related to the first, was the desire of the author to attempt to prove that he had gained at least a …

Experimental Tissue And Peripheral Eosinophilia, Orson Lee Treloar Jr. May 1965

Experimental Tissue And Peripheral Eosinophilia, Orson Lee Treloar Jr.

Biology

It has been known for some time that eosinophilia, either local or peripheral, is associated in some manner with the antigen-antibody reaction. Several theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. The most prominent of these theories at the present time is that proposed by Code (1944) and strongly supported by Archer (1963). These investigators contend that the release of histamine at the site of the antigen antibody reaction attracts eosinophils to the area. Litt (1964a), on the other hand, reject the eosinophilatactic function of histamine, but believes that the function of the eosinophil is to phagocytize the antigen antibody …

Utilization Of The Breeding Territory In The Black-Capped Chickadee, Raymond A. Stefanski May 1965

Utilization Of The Breeding Territory In The Black-Capped Chickadee, Raymond A. Stefanski

Biology

Breeding territorial behavior in birds is manifested in self-advertisement, localization of activity, increased conspicuousness, threatening postures, pursuit, or actual physical combat. The several activities represent a considerable expenditure of energy by the males. The function and significance of this behavior has been inferred from many studies in the past 35 years (Hinde, 1956), but until recently (Weeden, 1965; Stenger, 1958), no attempts have been made to quantitatively explain this phenomenon from empirical data.

The Diffracta Complex Of The Genus Polyphylla Harris (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Melolonthinae), Ronald M. Young May 1965

The Diffracta Complex Of The Genus Polyphylla Harris (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Melolonthinae), Ronald M. Young

Biology

The genus Polyphylla is distributed throughout the major portions of the northern and southern hemisphere but is more common in the temperate zones. Within North America the greatest number of species is in the western sections of the continent, being especially numerous in the southwestern and Pacific coastal regions of the United States. Blackwelder (1948) listed 26 species and one subspecies of Polyphylla which occur North of Mexico. Since then no additional species have been described.

Decision Problems, Lowell Anderson May 1965

Decision Problems, Lowell Anderson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

From an intuitive point of view the notion of effective procedure consists of a set of rules or instructions that enables one, in a finite number of steps and in a purely mechanical way, to answer yes or no to any one of a given class of questions. This procedure requires no intelligence to carry out the instructions and, in fact, it is conceivable that some mechanical contrivance may be constructed to carry out these instructions. Should such an effective procedure exist, that answers either yes or no, then the group of problems in question is said to be effectively …

Axiomatic Set Theory, Ronald P. Smit May 1965

Axiomatic Set Theory, Ronald P. Smit

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

An analysis of the well known paradoxes found in intuitive set theory has led to the reconstruction of set theory by axiomatic means. This exposition is devoted to Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with some changes made by Suppes.

The first order predicate calculus is presupposed. In addition to the usual quantifiers admitted, a unique existential quantifier is used. The primitive notions of the set theory are the empty set and the two place membership predicate.

A Biography Of Edith Bowen, Donald Edvalson May 1965

A Biography Of Edith Bowen, Donald Edvalson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1856 , a handcart company pushed and pulled its way along the dry and dusty trail over the plains to Salt Lake City. An eighteen year old lad, David Bowen, walked stiffly along, eagerly scanning the west for the "Promised Valley" of the Saints. He had walked a thousand miles for his faith-leaving all behind and not looking back. Four years later , over the same trail, still marked by a spiraling column of dust, came an ox team company. The wagons were loaded and Annie Shackleton was young, so the nineteen year old girl , London born and …

Agricultural Problems And Economic Growth In East Pakistan, Asad-Ud-Dowla Chowdhurry May 1965

Agricultural Problems And Economic Growth In East Pakistan, Asad-Ud-Dowla Chowdhurry

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Pakistan came into existence on August 14, 1947, by the partitioning of what was British India. The basis for the division was the desire of the Moslem population of India to form a sovereign state. Since the country was established in the sections of India which were predominantly Moslem, Pakistan emerged in the form of two blocks, East and West Pakistan. They are two provinces separated from each other by over 1000 miles.

A History Of The French Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints 1850-1960, Gary Ray Chard May 1965

A History Of The French Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints 1850-1960, Gary Ray Chard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an evangelical religion. From a beginning in western New York in 1830, it grew into a world-wide organization which numbered more than a million and a half members by 1960. Those largely responsible for this growth have been the Church members who have volunteered two to three years of their time to missionary service. In 1960 there were approximately 7,000 of these missionaries working in different areas of the world. Of this number, almost 1,800 were serving in Europe, where with the exception of the personnel of the United States government …

Children's Relationships With Peers, Carla Nelson May 1965

Children's Relationships With Peers, Carla Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A child's family is the center of his world during infancy and extending into the preschool years. As a child nears school age and in succeeding years, he reaches out into the world beyond his home environment. He comes in contact with the world of other people who arc not included in his family circle. In this new world of peers, the child finds something he does not find at home. Here are other individuals like himself who have many things in common, such as age, appearance, interests, and desires. We find in this peer culture, children who can better …

Reactions To Parenthood, Geraldine Rosine Brinley May 1965

Reactions To Parenthood, Geraldine Rosine Brinley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parenthood is a common experience, in the sense that it is almost universal among married couples, but it is a unique experience in the sense that there are great individual variations in its meaning and its impact upon the life of each parent.

In spite of the many variations in reactions and responses to parenthood, a stereotype reaction seems to prevail. The stereotyped conception of behavior following the conception of a child is for the wife to be filled with some inner joy which causes her to behave mysteriously for a time until she reveals the unsuspected truth to her …

The Influence Of Exchangeable Ions And Their Concentration In The Pore Fluid On Plastic And Strength Properties Of Cohesive Soil, Mahmoud H. Abd-El-Aziz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study was conducted to find out both the effect of different exchangeable cations and the concentration of ions in the soil pore fluid on strength and plastic properties of a sample of cohesive soil taken from the bank of an open drain ditch at the Utah State University Irrigation and Drainage Farm.

The experimental results of this study may be summarized by the following points:

  1. A general decrease of liquid limit and an increase in both shear strength and modulus of elasticity, with increasing salt concentration in the pore fluid, were observed for all samples, with the exception of …

Sound Communication In The Uinta Ground Squirrel, Donna Mae Balph May 1965

Sound Communication In The Uinta Ground Squirrel, Donna Mae Balph

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Numerous investigators have studied sound communication in animals in recent years. Most of these studies have been on birds, insects, or cetaceans, particularly the dolphin. Most of the studies on terrestrial mammals have been of the natural history type, and the authors have given an orthographic rendition of any sounds produced by that particular species. Few definitive studies have been done. There have been a few attempts to determine cause and function of sounds in mammals (Arvola, lImen, and Koponen, 1962; Bartholomew and Collias, 1962; Rowell and Hinde, 1962; Andrew, 1963).

No quantitative studies on sound communication in Citellus have …

Estimation Of Pan Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration Of Rice In The Central Plain Of Thailand By Using Various Formulas Based On Climatological Data, Paitoon Palayasoot May 1965

Estimation Of Pan Evaporation And Potential Evapotranspiration Of Rice In The Central Plain Of Thailand By Using Various Formulas Based On Climatological Data, Paitoon Palayasoot

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water has become one of major national concerns, and it is the limiting factor in the expansion of an irrigated agriculture. Irrigation development is rapidly growing all over the world. New lands are being brought under irrigation and older irrigation lands are being improved. In the planning and operation of an irrigation project, the estimation of water requirements and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, requires careful consideration. A knowledge of evapotranspiration is playing an increasingly important part in irrigation science. It is the best index of water requirements which represent the amount of water that should be applied by irrigation for …
