Topic From Galois Theory, Pai-Yuan Chang

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Galois theory constitutes an excellent introduction group theory and field theory and provides a strong motivation for the introduction of the basic concepts of abstract algebra. This paper explains the basic theory and describes how it is applied to prove the unsolvability "by radicals" of equations of degree n >= 5.

Graduate Recital, Juergen Sass

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this writing is to:

1. to clarify and give added meaning to the recital which is being presented partially in place of a master's thesis

2. to give expression to those studies which the author feels are most helpful in strengthening him In his teaching.

The paper will consequently consist of four sections; one will deal with the vocal mechanism which should be thoroughly understood by every vocal teacher, whether he may work with young teen-agers or college students. The next two sections will cover the development of vocal pedagogy and the evolution of the art song. …

A Graduate Recital Report, Jean Madsen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In preparing for the recital many challenges were presented. It was quite revealing to learn how much can be forgotten and how many incorrect habits can be developed in a long period of time without continuous study. Many hours of work and continuous effort have been devoted in an attempt to overcome these seemingly insurmountable problems.

Autonomy And Determination Of Abnormal Growths In The Tumorous Head Strain Of Drosophila Melanogaster, David Joseph Remondini May 1967

Autonomy And Determination Of Abnormal Growths In The Tumorous Head Strain Of Drosophila Melanogaster, David Joseph Remondini

Biology

The tumorous head (tu-h) strain of Drosophila melanogaster is characterized by variable, amorphous or partly organized growths about the adult head, including the eyes, antennae, and facial regions but excluding the mouthparts. No other regions of the body have been found to be affected. The trait is controlled by two major genes, tu-1 on the first chromosome and tu-3 on the third chromosome. Much interest has centered around the nature of the growths. The histologic appearance of the tumor in the adult is already known. Previous attempts had been made to detect the first appearance of the abnormality in the …

A Revision Of The Genus Osmia, Subgenera Osmia, Chalcosmia And Cephalosmia (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Richard W. Rust May 1967

A Revision Of The Genus Osmia, Subgenera Osmia, Chalcosmia And Cephalosmia (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Richard W. Rust

Biology

This paper is a taxonomic revision of the bee subgenera Osmia, Chalcosmia and Cephalosmia of the genus Osmia in North America. Cephalosmia occurs only in North America, while Osmia and Chalcosmia occur also in the Old World. Fifteen species and three subspecies are treated: one species, Osmia (Chalcosmia) alamedensis, is described as new, and one species, Osmia (Osmia) cornifrons (Radoszkowski), is new to the North American bee fauna. Two names are placed in synonymy for the first time, and one other name occurs in a new subgeneric combination. Although primarily a taxonomic thesis, this …

Vocalizations Of The Long-Billed Curlew, Dennis M. Forsythe May 1967

Vocalizations Of The Long-Billed Curlew, Dennis M. Forsythe

Biology

Avian vocalizations have been of great interest to ethologists and ornithologists for many years because of the many forms of interspecific and intraspecific information they convey (Marler, 1959; Armstrong, 1963). Various methods have been utilized to describe bird vocalizations but most, because of their subjectivity, have proven inadequate for detailed investigations. It was not until the development of the Sound spectrograph that a satisfactory method for bio-acoustical analysis became available.

The Effects Of A Selective Membrane Filter Medium On Fecal Coliforms, Donald Jesse Mcgraw May 1967

The Effects Of A Selective Membrane Filter Medium On Fecal Coliforms, Donald Jesse Mcgraw

Biology

A bacterium reported to be indicative of human (or mammalian) fecal pollution is Type I (fecal coliform) Escherichia coli. Although this type may be isolated by use of elevated temperature (44.5 C), primary isolation without enrichment is difficult. Direct study without primary enrichment is possible with mFC Medium (Difeo), however, routine work in this laboratory yields poor results when mFC medium is compared with the standard EC elevated temperature technique. Using three strains of Type I E. coli, this study attempted to determine some reasons for the low recovery in mFC medium. The test organisms, preadapted to 37 …

The Life And Poetry Of Francois Villon, Austin E. Fife May 1967

The Life And Poetry Of Francois Villon, Austin E. Fife

Faculty Honor Lectures

The highest hope of the teacher of literature is to illuminate life in the flame of experience : not in the sense th at hi story repeats itself, but rath er th at particul ar significance can be given to the here and now when it is experienced through minds with uniquely true sight.

One such mind is that of the fift eenth century French poet, Fran<;ois Villon. He sought out life with all his senses . He examined human experience with all his strength of vi sion, never once burying his head in the sands of wishful thinking because what he saw was beyond endurance. Though writing in the fourteen-hundreds he has been called "modern." We might say that he is great because his vi sion transcends time: th at he is "modern" because he is timeless . Perhaps this is because he pits the precious and fragile continuum of life again st the static nihili sm of death, than which even the most degraded life is preferable.

This lecture is not one for expert s on the fiftee nth-century with a special interest in Villon. R ather it is a literature teacher's effort to concentrate in one fifty-minute capsule the …

Liahona High School, Its Prologue And Development To 1965, Delworth Keith Young

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Information concerning the Tongan Islands, the Friendly Islands as they are often called, is scant. As an educator teaching in Tonga, the author was very disappointed that so little information was in published form about this island kingdom. Virtually no written information was available concerning the new school assignment.

The author began a quest for information which resulted in this research. The writer held interviews with various missionaries, teachers, and church builders who had been in Tonga and at the newly designed Liahona High School. Some of their observations seemed to be in conflict. All agreed that a written history …

It has been interesting to note the development of the instrumental program in Utah in the past twenty-five years. Instrumentalists are in demand for a great number of organizations which perform in various capacities from the sports spectaculars to symphonic band and orchestras. Furthermore, the personnel of these groups are usually trained as soloists.

Much of this improvement has been due to the efforts of dedicated musicians, teachers who are affiliated with institutions of higher learning. They have marshalled the resources of the colleges and universities to upgrade the level of music education. They have trained people to train others …

A Guide For The College Supervisor Of Business Education In Training Student Teachers At The College Of Southern Utah, Larry A. Olsen May 1967

A Guide For The College Supervisor Of Business Education In Training Student Teachers At The College Of Southern Utah, Larry A. Olsen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The first and most serious concern for the college supervisor is the lack of a definite description of his job. Perhaps the cause of this dilemma is the divergent practices of the different teacher education programs offered by teacher training institutions.

Student teaching is considered to be the pinnacle of the education spiral for student teachers who are training to become professional teachers. The college supervisor of student teachers is one of the most influential individuals in guiding the student through the teacher training program. An efficient college supervisor is one who is aware of his responsibilities and who practices …

A Suggested Integrated Course Of Study For A Secretarial Studies Program At Bonneville High School, Brenda A. Wilde

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Speeches are given and articles are written about the changing dimensions of the world of work. As knowledge increases and improvements are made in the field of business, jobs vary accordingly. Since change is inevitable and desirable, business education courses need to prepare students for tomorrow.

Rose states that:

Business education subject matter is neither static nor parochial . Electronics have accelerated the world's business and is creating a near revolution in our vocational business education classroom.

This near revolution mentioned by Rowe has caused me to ask, "Are my students going out into the business world knowing what is …

Various Aspects Of Social Organization In Caged Groups Of House Sparrows (Passer Domesticus), John R. Watson May 1967

Various Aspects Of Social Organization In Caged Groups Of House Sparrows (Passer Domesticus), John R. Watson

Biology

In order to study various aspects of social organization in House Sparrows (Passer domesticus), eight groups of sparrows were observed under captive conditions from January 1965, through October, 1965. Each group contained one adult male who secured a high win-loss ratio. However, the establishment of a straight line hierarchy was blocked by site-related dominance. The aggression exhibited by the alpha male was in defense of roost site and not a form of social organization. Juveniles were treated as adult females by adults of both sexes. Juveniles showed a marked ability to defend against adult males. Activity patterns were …

Leaf Cutting As A Factor In The Insecticide Susceptibility Of The Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee (Megachile Rotundata-Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Gordon D. Waller May 1967

Leaf Cutting As A Factor In The Insecticide Susceptibility Of The Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee (Megachile Rotundata-Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Gordon D. Waller

Biology

The results of various laboratory tests have shown Megachile rotundata to be generally more resistant to insecticides than are Apis mellifera or Nomia melanderi. This greater resistance is not substantiated in field tests and observations, where M. rotundata appears to be highly susceptible to most insecticides. Its biological peculiarity of using alfalfa leaf cuttings for building cells may account for these conflicting results. Consequently, studies were initiated to determine the part played by the leaf cutting habit in the danger of insecticides to this bee. Two types of exposure were studied. In the first, either the source of nectar …

The Alignment Procedure Of A Two Crystal Spectrometer, Jay W. Phippen May 1967

The Alignment Procedure Of A Two Crystal Spectrometer, Jay W. Phippen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

For the sake of completeness, it was felt that a brief resume' of x-ray scattering theory as it affects the alignment procedure of a two crystal spectrometer would be beneficial.

X-ray diffraction from a single crystal slab.

W. L. Bragg (1912) tried the experiment of reflecting a beam of x-rays from the cleavage surface of a crystal and found on the photo-graphic plate a spot at the angle of reflection. He then replaced the photo graphic plate with an ionization chamber which he mounted so that it could be rotated about the axis upon which the reflecting crystal is …

Factors Influencing Population Growth Of Tribolium Brevicornis In The Laboratory, Amin Gulla May 1967

Factors Influencing Population Growth Of Tribolium Brevicornis In The Laboratory, Amin Gulla

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To determine the effect of the factors of the environment (temperature, relative humidity, and food) on the population growth of Tribolium brevicornis, different levels of temperatures from 17.5°C - 37.5°C were used. Effect of these IeveIs of temperatures was tested upon both pre-embryonic and post-embryonic development. No hatching occurred at 17.5°C, but the threshold temperature (the minimum temperature for the development) was just before 17.5°C. The optimum temperature for the embryonic development was found to be between 32.5°C - 35°C.

With the use of the saturated salt solution according to Buxton (1931) and Buxton and Melanby (1934), certain humidity …

An Examination Of A Putative System For The In Vitro Synthesis Of Drosophila Tryptophan Pyrrolase, John P. Phillips May 1967

An Examination Of A Putative System For The In Vitro Synthesis Of Drosophila Tryptophan Pyrrolase, John P. Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A system, reported by Morrison (1964), for the in vitro synthesis of Drosophila tryptophan pyrrolase has been critically studied. This putative system is based on the addition of a Drosophila "RNA" extract to a Drosophila cell-free protein synthesizing system; the synthesized enzyme is then allowed to catalyze a specific reaction, the product of which is measured by direct adsorption.

The results of this study present a three-fold argument against the interpretation of synthesis of tryptophan pyrrolase in the Morrison in vitro system: (1) RNA from a null-allele, v36f, stimulated the same tryptophan pyrrolase "activity" in the in vitro …

The Development Of A Sound Filmstrip Entitled Office Occupations In Utah, Richard Lynn Burbidge May 1967

The Development Of A Sound Filmstrip Entitled Office Occupations In Utah, Richard Lynn Burbidge

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A 1965 status study of vocational Education in Utah sought the opinions of state educators and the genera l citizenry. Two major conclusions from that study follow:

The present day school system is not adequately meeting the needs of young people. It serves well the 20 percent who may complete college and some others, but it is woefully short of meeting the needs of nearly 80 percent of the young people of this country. This conclusion is supported by the responses of school directors throughout the country, school district superintendents in Utah, and the school board members and parents in …

Inventory Of Economic Understanding Of Sky View High School Graduates, 1966, J. Karl Worthington

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

All societies are faced with the problems of what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce goods and services. To each of the many facets of each of these questions are many alternatives. The different economic systems in the world allow different segments or parts of the system's population to select the answers to economic questions from the alternatives to the economic questions all systems face. The quality of the decisions made is of vital importance to the progress of the particular economic system.

A Comparative Study Of 8th And 9th Grade Algebra Students At Clayton Junior High School, Steven Spencer Terry

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

With the inclusion of algebra in the eighth grade in the curricula of Clayton Junior High School there has been created a need for some means of identifying students who are likely to be successful in algebra at this level. For the most part, it has only involved, in the past, advising students with very low grades in arithemetic not to take algebra.

An Experiment To Determine If Teacher Preparation In A Small High School Can Be Reduced By Alternating Class Scheduling, John Carl Tuft May 1967

An Experiment To Determine If Teacher Preparation In A Small High School Can Be Reduced By Alternating Class Scheduling, John Carl Tuft

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine if by alternating certain classes biennially the number of different teaching preparations could be reduced thus decreasing the teachers' load. The study also attempted to ascertain the effect this type of scheduling had upon the attitudes of teachers and students toward these classes. A further attempt was made to determine if mixing students from two grade levels resulted in the younger student being penalized with respect to his cumulative grade point average.

The significant conclusions that can be drawn from the results follow:

Teachers, generally, thought well of the project and desires …

A Study Of Scholastic Achievement And Physical Performance At Logan Junior High School, Richard Sackett

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It has been a common statement by many educators that the athletic type is a person who has "more brawn than brain." Many people assume that low physical ability usually accompanies superior mental ability and high physical ability usually accompanies inferior mental ability. Some members of the academic faculty object to relinquishing school time for athletic and sporting activities. They assume that the majority of the students involved are of the poorer academic type and cannot afford to miss school time for sporting and athletic activities. Research on previous studies support the contention that mental achievement and physical fitness are …

During 1962, 15,782 businesses in the United States failed. Nearly half, 7,552 of the failures were in the retail field. Causes of failure ranged from insufficient capital to poor store location. However, more than ninety per cent of the failures in retailing are thought to be caused by a lack of training and experience on the part of store owners and their employees. In 1966, the state of Utah had the highest per capita business failure rate of any state in the nation as reported by Dun's Review Magazine. Undoubtedly business failures in Utah are also caused by the lack …
