Factors Contributing To Late Identification Of Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Children In Louisiana, Danielle D. Mercer, Tri Tran, Dawne Mccabe, Terri Ibieta, Dana Hubbard

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

To ensure children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) receive supports they need to reach their full potential, it is imperative that they be identified as early as possible. Early Hearing Detection and Intervention benchmarks stipulate children who are D/HH be enrolled in early intervention no later than 6 months of age. A major barrier to early enrollment is late identification. We reviewed records of children identified as D/HH in Louisiana after 6 months of age for 2015-2020 birth cohorts to determine factors contributing to the late identification. Cases were examined in-depth after it was determined that a diagnosis was …

Fire Regimes Of Utah: The Past As Prologue, Joseph D. Birch, James A. Lutz Nov 2023

Fire Regimes Of Utah: The Past As Prologue, Joseph D. Birch, James A. Lutz

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

(1) Background: Satellite monitoring of fire effects is widespread, but often satellite-derived values are considered without respect to the characteristic severity of fires in different vegetation types or fire areas. Particularly in regions with discontinuous vegetation or narrowly distributed vegetation types, such as the state of Utah, USA, specific characterization of satellite-derived fire sensitivity by vegetation and fire size may improve both pre-fire and post-fire management activities. (2) Methods: We analyzed the 775 medium-sized (40 ha ≤ area < 400 ha) and 697 large ( ≥ 400 ha) wildfires that occurred in Utah from 1984 to 2022 and assessed burn severity for all vegetation types using the differenced Normalized Burn Ratio. (3) Results: Between 1984-2021, Utah annually experienced an average of 38 fires ≥ 40 ha that burned an annual average of 58,242 ha with a median dNBR of 165. Fire was heavily influenced by sagebrush and shrubland vegetation types, as these constituted 50.2% (17% SD) of area burned, a proportion which was relatively consistent (18% to 79% yr-1). Medium-sized fires had higher mean severity than large fries in non-forested vegetation types, but forested vegetation types showed the reverse. …

Manure And Wastewater Sampling Guide, Rhonda Miller, Cody Zesiger, Kalen Taylor, Matt Yost

All Current Publications

Manure and wastewater are resources that can reduce your fertilizer needs and help improve soil and your bottom line. It is important that manure and wastewater be sampled and tested so one can apply the manure and nutrients appropriately. Sampling and analysis should occur as close to land application as possible as nutrient concentration in manure and wastewater can change over time due to runoff, leaching, and changes in moisture percentage. Nitrogen can also be lost due to volatilization. There are two primary approaches for when to sample: (1) just before land application, and (2) at the time of land …

Sierra forest resilience and aspen restoration

Anne Marie Holt

While searching for hidden aspen stands on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, I scan the forest for a faint shimmer. The distinctive quaking of the aspen is a dead giveaway for the location. Rarely found in contiguous stands, aspen appear at meadow fringes, along streams, or where snow may persist. These seral stands need periodic disturbance to trigger aspen regeneration and to reset conifer growth. Without such events, the conifers continue to overtop the aspen until none remain. Western slope aspen may be sparse but are important habitat for …

Climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, making people more vulnerable in a variety of ways1-2. It is essential to determine if individuals believe they are susceptible to the effects of climate change in order to develop effective adaptation strategies.

Climate change has contributed to extreme weather occurrences in Utah in recent years. For instance, in the summer of 2022, there was a severe or extreme drought in all of Utah's counties3. Health effects of drought vary with intensity4 and can cause climate related deaths directly and indirectly, such as by …

Towards A Virtual Test Framework To Predict Residual Compressive Strength After Lightning Strikes, Scott L.J. Millen, Xiaodong Xu, Juhyeong Lee, Suparno Mukhopadhyay, Michael R. Wisnom, Adrian Murphy Nov 2023

Towards A Virtual Test Framework To Predict Residual Compressive Strength After Lightning Strikes, Scott L.J. Millen, Xiaodong Xu, Juhyeong Lee, Suparno Mukhopadhyay, Michael R. Wisnom, Adrian Murphy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A novel integrated modelling framework is proposed as a set of coupled virtual tests to predict the residual compressive strength of carbon/epoxy composites after a lightning strike. Sequentially-coupled thermal-electric and thermo-mechanical models were combined with Compression After Lightning Strike (CAL) analyses, considering both thermal and mechanical lightning strike damage. The predicted lightning damage was validated using experimental images and X-ray Computed Tomography. Delamination and ply degradation information were mapped to a compression model, with a maximum stress criterion, using python scripts. Experimental data, in which artificial lightning strike and compression testing were performed, was used to assess the predictive capabilities …

On Quantifying Uncertainty In Lightning Strike Damage Of Composite Laminates: A Hybrid Stochastic Framework Of Coupled Transient Thermal-Electrical Simulations, R. S. Chahar, J. Lee, T. Mukhopadhyay

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Lightning strike damage can severely affect the thermo-mechanical performance of composite laminates. It is essential to quantify the effect of lightning strikes considering the inevitable influence of material and geometric uncertainties for ensuring the operational safety of aircraft. This paper presents an efficient support vector machine (SVM)-based surrogate approach coupled with computationally intensive transient thermal-electrical finite element simulations to quantify the uncertainty in lightning strike damage. The uncertainty in epoxy matrix thermal damage and electrical responses of unprotected carbon/epoxy composite laminates is probabilistically quantified considering the stochasticity in temperature-dependent multi-physical material properties and ply orientations. Further, the SVM models are …

Microbial Glycosylation Of Antitubercular Agent Chlorflavonin, Jie Ren, Jixun Zhan Nov 2023

Microbial Glycosylation Of Antitubercular Agent Chlorflavonin, Jie Ren, Jixun Zhan

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Flavonoids have shown health-benefiting properties, such as antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities, and are commonly used as nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Although flavonoids are predominantly identified from plants, several filamentous fungal species have also been reported to produce bioactive flavonoids, including chlorflavonin from Aspergillus candidus, a novel halogenated flavonoid with potent antifungal and antitubercular (anti-TB) activities. Unfortunately, the low water-solubility of this molecule may hinder its bioavailability. Glycosylation is an effective method to enhance the polarity of natural products and alter their physicochemical properties. This work focuses on the development of novel water-soluble chlorflavonin derivatives to combat the threat of drug-resistant …

Unintended Effects Of Preferential Tax Assessment On Farmland Protection: Evidence From Utah's Farmland Assessment Act, Wai Yan Siu, Man Li, Arthur J. Caplan Oct 2023

Unintended Effects Of Preferential Tax Assessment On Farmland Protection: Evidence From Utah's Farmland Assessment Act, Wai Yan Siu, Man Li, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

This study examines the effect of Utah's Greenbelt program, the state's preferential tax-assessment effort to protect farmland, using an instrumental variable-fixed effects strategy. We find that an unintended effect of the program leads to more conversion of agricultural land to development than the protection it provides. The protection effect is concentrated on parcels with smaller agricultural areas, while conversion occurs on parcels with larger agricultural areas. Our findings shed light on the rationale of a proposed amendment to the policy—Utah House Bill 25—which did not pass during the 2016 legislative session.
