A Theoretical Proton-Proton Pair Production Cross-Section Calculation, Jay W. Phippen
A Theoretical Proton-Proton Pair Production Cross-Section Calculation, Jay W. Phippen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The calculation of both electron-pair and muon-pair production cross-sections was made using Feynman's quantum electrodynamics. Pseudo-scaler coupling was used between the nucleons and vector coupling was used between the photon and the Fermions. The protons were considered as Dirac particles and radiative corrections were omitted.
Eight fourth-order Feynman-Dyson diagrams were used. The subsequent sixty-four TRACES were reduced to seven basic topologically different TRACES. From the seven basic TRACES, it was possible to generate the sixty-four TRACES by the proper permutations of the variables.
With the mathematics and the corresponding computer programs written down, data (energies and momenta which represent the …
Asynchronous Logic Design With Flip-Flop Constraints, David Franklin Cox
Asynchronous Logic Design With Flip-Flop Constraints, David Franklin Cox
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Some techniques are presented to permit the implementation of asynchronous sequential circuits using standard flip-flops. An algorithm is presented for the RS flip-flop, and it is shown that any flow table may be realized using the algorithm (the flow table is assumed to be realizable using standard logic gates). The approach is shown to be directly applicable to synchronous circuits, and transition flip-flops (JK, D, and T) are analyzed using the ideas developed. Constraints are derived for the flow tables to meet to be realizable using transition flip-flops in asynchronous situations, and upper and lower bounds on the number of …
A Comparative Analysis Of The Use Of A Markov Chain Versus A Binomial Probability Model In Estimating The Probability Of Consecutive Rainless Days, Jack Wilfred Homeyer
A Comparative Analysis Of The Use Of A Markov Chain Versus A Binomial Probability Model In Estimating The Probability Of Consecutive Rainless Days, Jack Wilfred Homeyer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Markov chain process for predicting the occurence of a sequence of rainless days, a standard technique, is critically examined in light of the basic underlying assumptions that must be made each time it is used. This is then compared to a simple binomial model wherein an event is defined to be a series of rainless days of desired length. Computer programs to perform the required calculations are then presented and compared as to complexity and operating characteristics. Finally, an example of applying both programs to real data is presented and further comparisons are drawn between the two techniques.

"In The Toils" Or "Onward For Zion": Images Of The Mormon Woman, 1852-1890, Gail Farr Casterline
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this thesis is to identify and discuss various popular images of the Mormon women of Utah between 1852 and 1890, the period during which the Latter-day Saints openly practiced plural marriage. The phrase "in the toils" refers to the basic image present in the minds of many Americans--that the women of the church were an oppressed, unhappy, enslaved group of individuals. This image, expressed in different ways, is found in many published writings of the period examined.
After demonstrating the presence of this "in the toils" image, this study then attempts to analyze and evaluate its significance. …

Insect Pollinators Frequenting Strawberry Blossoms And The Effect Of Honey Bees On Yield And Fruit Quality, William P. Nye, J. Lamar Anderson
All PIRU Publications
Open plots of strawbery (Fragaria sp.) or plots caged with colonies of honey bees (Apis melilfera L.) produced less malformed fruit than plots screened to exclude large insects. Bees and large Diptera, mostly drone flies (Eristalis spp.), were the most numerous visitors to the strawberry blossoms. A list of insects including 108 species representing 35 families frequenting strawberry blossoms in Utah was compiled. The most efficient pollinators were Apis mellifera, Halictus ligatus Say, and Eristalis spp.
The Allowed Rate Vs The Marginal Cost Of Capital In A Public Utility Rate Case, H. Craig Petersen
The Allowed Rate Vs The Marginal Cost Of Capital In A Public Utility Rate Case, H. Craig Petersen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Private electric and telephone utilities in the United States are regulated on a rate of return on capital basis. For many years, students of regulation have argued that this type of regulation does not provide utilities with any incentive to be efficient in their provision of service. In 1962, Harvey Averch and Leland Johnson provided analytical support for the proposition that such regulation tends to result in inefficient production. Averch and Johnson demonstrate that the firm subject to a regulatory constraint has an incentive to use more capital in production than would be the case if costs were to be …
