A Study To Determine The Cultural Awareness Of Engineering Students, Gordon P. Foreman Jan 1975

A Study To Determine The Cultural Awareness Of Engineering Students, Gordon P. Foreman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Origins of the Study

As an engineering student in the Honors Program, I am continually faced with the stereotype of engineering students as people with no interest in social or cultural affairs and no consideration of things which cannot be tied down and measured. I decided to test this conception as best I could, even to comparing engineering students quantitatively to natural resources, history, and business majors. I attempted to get number comparisons for the index of relative awarenesses of culture. I suppose that only an engineering student would have the temerity to try to attach numerical values to something …

Process Studies And Modeling Of Self-Cleaning Capacity Of Mountain Creeks For Recreation Planning And Management, Cheng-Lung Chen, Keith D. Davis Jan 1975

Process Studies And Modeling Of Self-Cleaning Capacity Of Mountain Creeks For Recreation Planning And Management, Cheng-Lung Chen, Keith D. Davis

Reports

Reaeration process studies were conducted on a mountain creek and a large laboratory flume. The method of evaluating the dispersion coefficient, mean velocity, and reaeration coefficient for both creek and flume consisted of finding these values for a deoxygenated portion of the flow containing a conservative tracer (dye). The deoxygenated slug is measured as it moved downstream and the three values are best fit in the analytical solution of the longitudinal dispersion equation which dynamically describes the flow of the dispersing slug in the stream. The best fit was accomplished by using the method of least squares of the differences …

Urban Storm Runoff Inlet Hydrograph Study, Volume 5, Soil-Cover-Moisture Complex: Analysis Of Parametric Infiltration Models For Highway Sideslopes, Cheng-Lung Chen

Reports

The main objective of this study is to develop an accurate design method for computing inlet hydrographs of surface runoff, with average recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years, from typical urban highway by flood routing technique. The boundary-value problem of one-dimensional infiltration resulting from rainfall is formulated and solved numerically on a digital computer. The numerical solutions of this idealized mathematical model is used as a basic testing tool in the subsequent analysis of various parametric infiltration models including the Green-Ampt, Kostiakov, Philip, Horton, and Holtan equations. The time of ponding is shown to be the most important …

Urban Storm Runoff Inlet Hydrograph Study Volume 4; Synthetic Storms For Design Of Urban Highway Drainage Facilities., Cheng-Lung Chen

Reports

The main objective of this study is to develop an accurate design method for computing inlet hydrographs of surface runoff, with average recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years, from typical urban highway by flood routing technique. Knowledge of the time distribution of rainfall in heavy storms constitutes a basis for the design of an urban storm sewer system. A unified time-coordinate system and the rainfall intensity-duration-frequency relationships are used to develop the generalized synthetic (design) hyetograph equations for all types of storms. The hyetograph equations are further normalized for identifying the dimensionless parameters that play predominant roles in …

Urban Storm Runoff Inlet Hydrograph Study Volume 1: Computer Analysis Of Runoff From Urban Highway Watersheds Under Time- And Space-Varying Rainstorms, Chen-Lung Chen

Reports

The main objective of this study is to develop an accurate design method for computing inlet hydrographs of surface runoff, with average recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years, from typical urban highway by flood routing technique. The most comprehensive mathematical model based on the method of characteristics was developed for computing the runoff inlet hydrograph. All flood routing methods were extensively reviewed and the most efficient and accurate technique was adopted for the formulation of a numerical (computer) model including all the rainfall-runoff processes on a highway watershed. Accuracy of the computer model was then examined by comparing …

Urban Storm Runoff Inlet Hydrograph Study Volume 2; Laboratory Studies Of The Resistance Coefficient For Sheet Flow Over Natural Turf Surfaces, Cheng-Lung Chen

Reports

The main objective of this study is to develop an accurate design method for computing inlet hydrogaphs of surface runoff, with average recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years, from typical urban highway by flood routing technique. Resistance to sheet flows over natural turf surfaces is experimentally investigated. The formuation of a functional relationship between the resistence coefficient and controlling parameters for shallow flows over various turf surfaces is essential to the mathematical modeling of surface runoff from urban highway sideslopes covered with different species of turf. An analysis of results obtained from laboratory experiments from laminar flow on …

An Application Of The Utah State University Watershed Simulation Model To The Entiat Experimental Watershed, Washington State, David S. Bowles, J. Paul Riley, George B. Shih

Reports

To study the effects of a forest fire on runoff characteristics, the Utah State University Watershed Simulation Model (USUWSM) has been applied to three small drainage areas in the Entiat Experimental Watershed which is located within the Wenatchee National Forest of central Washington. Each component of the USUWSM has been described in the report, including structural changes to the model that were necessary to achieve reasonable agreement between observed and simulated runoff hydrographs. Lack of information on the spatial distribution and precipitation due to the absence of an adequate precipitation gaging network on or close to the study area was …

Program For Missing Data In The Multivariate Normal Distribution, Chi-Ping Lu Jan 1975

Program For Missing Data In The Multivariate Normal Distribution, Chi-Ping Lu

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Missing data can often cause many problems in research work. Therefore for carrying out analysis, some procedure for obtaining estimates in the presence of missing data should be applied. Various theories and techniques have been developed for different types of problems.

Analysis of the Multivariate Normal Distribution with missing data is one of the areas studied. It has been discussed earlier by Wilkes (1932), Lord (1955), Edgett (1956) and Hartley (1958). They have established some basic concepts and an outline in the way of estimation.

In the last ten years, A. A. Afifi and R. M. Elasfoff also have contributed …

Multivalue Methods, Clayton V. Henrie Jan 1975

Multivalue Methods, Clayton V. Henrie

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Methods of solving ordinary differential equations with initial conditions are of a great importance to engineers and scientists. Many of these equations can be solved by well-known analytical techniques, but a greater number of physically significant differential equations cannot be so solved. Thus, the solutions of these equations must be approximated numerically. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the techniques used in solving differential equations with initial conditions by "multivalue methods."

Multivariate Analysis Of Variance For Simple Designs, Yin-Yin Chen Jan 1975

Multivariate Analysis Of Variance For Simple Designs, Yin-Yin Chen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The analysis of variance is a well known tool for testing how treatments change the average response of experimental units. The essence of the procedure is to compare the variation among means of groups of units subjected to the same treatment with the within treatment variation. If the variation among means is large with respect to the within group variation we are likely to conclude that the treatments caused the variation and hence we say the treatments cause some change in the group means.

The usual analysis of variance checks how far apart the group means are in a single …

Discriminant Function Analysis, Kuo Hsiung Su Jan 1975

Discriminant Function Analysis, Kuo Hsiung Su

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The technique of discriminant function analysis was originated by R.A. Fisher and first applied by Barnard (1935). Two very useful summaries of the recent work in this technique can be found in Hodges (1950) and in Tosuoka and Tiedeman (1954). The techniques have been used primarily in the fields of anthropology, psychology, biology, medicine, and education, and have only begun to be applied to other fields in recent years.

Classification and discriminant function analyses are two phases in the attempt to predict which of several populations an observation might be a member of, on the basis of multivariate measurements. Both …

An Evaluation Of Bartlett's Chi-Square Approximation For The Determinant Of A Matrix Of Sample Zero-Order Correlation Coefficients, Stephen M. Hattori Jan 1975

An Evaluation Of Bartlett's Chi-Square Approximation For The Determinant Of A Matrix Of Sample Zero-Order Correlation Coefficients, Stephen M. Hattori

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The single equation least-squares regression model has been extensively studied by economists and statisticians alike in order to determine the problems which arise when particular assumptions are violated. Much literature is available in terms of the properties and limitations of the model. However, on the multicollinearity problem, there has been little research, and consequently, limited literature is available when the problem is encountered. Farrar & Glauber (1967) present a collection of techniques to use in order to detect or diagnose the occurrence of multicollinearity within a regression analysis. They attempt to define multicollinearity in terms of departures from a hypothesized …

The Computation Of Eigenvalues And Eigenvectors Of An Nxn Real General Matrix, Yeh-Hao Ma Jan 1975

The Computation Of Eigenvalues And Eigenvectors Of An Nxn Real General Matrix, Yeh-Hao Ma

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The eigenvalues of the matrix eigenproblem Ax = λx are computed by the QR double-step method and the eigenvectors by inverse power method.

The matrix A is preliminarily scaled by the equilibration and normalization procedure. The scaled matrix is then reduced to an upper-Hessenberg form by Householder's method. The QR double-step iteration is performed on the upper-Hessenberg matrix. After all the eigenvalues are found, the inverse power method is performed on the upper-Hessenberg matrix to obtain the corresponding eigenvectors.

The program consists of five subroutines which is able to find real and/or complex eigen value/vector of an nxn real matrix.

Regional Development: An Econometric Study Of The Role Of Water Development In Effectuating Population And Income Changes, Herbert H. Fullerton, Chris W. Lewis, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith, Reed Willis Jan 1975

Regional Development: An Econometric Study Of The Role Of Water Development In Effectuating Population And Income Changes, Herbert H. Fullerton, Chris W. Lewis, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith, Reed Willis

Reports

Twelve measures of regional economic growth, including populations and three measures of income were compared for areas with and without water investment in 246 counties and 42 water resources subareas in the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. Simple mean omparisons for these measures compiled for the decades of 1940-1950, 1950-1960, and 1960-1970 failed to support the hypothesis that economic growth of those counties and subareas receiving water investment was significantly highter than in those areas which did not, with the possible exception of the 1940-1950 decade. This result is obciously tempered by the fact …

Multiple Uses Of Utah Irrigation Canals: Cache County As A Case Study, James J. Kennedy, Komain Unhanand Dec 1974

Multiple Uses Of Utah Irrigation Canals: Cache County As A Case Study, James J. Kennedy, Komain Unhanand

Reports

Irrigation use is an obvious benefit of Utah canals that has been recognized for over 100 years. This study attempts to illustrate other, less obvious, uses. the major use examined was recreational, but canals are presently functioning as storm drainage systems and have potential for diverting flood crests in many river systems.

Recreational use of canals falls into two categories. There is passive use such as its landscape values, affects on creating shade and bird-wildlife habitat, etc., that is difficult to quantify but no less important than active canal use such as tubing, hiking, bank-play, bicycling, etc. We selected several …

Development And Preliminary Application Of Mathematical Models To The Weber Basin, W. J. Grenney, D. S. Bowles, M. D. Chambers, J. P. Riley Dec 1974

Development And Preliminary Application Of Mathematical Models To The Weber Basin, W. J. Grenney, D. S. Bowles, M. D. Chambers, J. P. Riley

Reports

The adoption of stream standards, whether for direct application or for the establishment of realistic effluent standards, creates a need to predict the impact of pollution loads on river water quality during critical flow periods or as the result of future user demands. Because of the complexity of aquatic systems, mathematical models are an excellent medium for bringing together the state-of-the-art knowledge from a variety of disciplines into a form which can be readily applied to practical problems. Applying a mathematical model to a river system has the added advantage of providing a structure for the systematic consideration of the …

An Investigation Of Oral Stereognosis And Articulation In Sighted And Blind Children, Mariette Johnson Milbrandt Dec 1974

An Investigation Of Oral Stereognosis And Articulation In Sighted And Blind Children, Mariette Johnson Milbrandt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if a significant difference exists between oral stereognosis skills of blind and sighted children. The possibility of a relationship between oral stereognosis and articulation was also explored in both the sighted and blind populations. A group of twenty-four blind and a group of twenty-four sighted subjects between the ages of seven and twenty were divided into subgroups of those having normal speech and those with defective articulation. There were twelve subjects in each subgroup. A 20-item test of oral stereognosis (NIDR forms) was administered to each subject and error scores taken.

Results …

An Analysis Of Participation And Leadership In A College Seminar, Hugh J. Phillips Dec 1974

An Analysis Of Participation And Leadership In A College Seminar, Hugh J. Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The task of this research was to describe the rates and patterns of verbal behavior emitted in a college seminar, under two leadership conditions, teacher leadership and student leadership. The subjects were 12 college students and the course's associate professor. The data were gathered by using R. F. Bale's interaction process analysis. Results indicate that rates of verbal behavior and numbers and rates of paired student-to-student interaction were higher under student leadership than under teacher leadership. In addition, there was a more equitable distribution of responses under student leadership than under teacher leadership.

Food, Nutrition, And Health, Problems And Prospects, D. K. Salunkhe Nov 1974

Food, Nutrition, And Health, Problems And Prospects, D. K. Salunkhe

Faculty Honor Lectures

Food, nutrition, and health - and their complex interrelationships - are necessities of life. Basically, nutrition depends on food; health depends on nutrition. Everyone needs to have enough good quality food to sustain himself. Satisfying that need on a world basis must be of concern to each of us.

Although accurate data are lacking, it is estimated that more than two-thirds of today's world population is afflicted by hunger and/ or malnutrition. Almost 300 million children are suffering physical and, probably, mental damage because of insufficient food. This evidence points to one of two conclusions: we have either too many …

Poplars In The Prairie Provinces, G. A. Steneker

Aspen Bibliography

The story of poplars is an unusual tale - a rag to riches story. The poplar has gone from weed to popular resource, because today this abundant species is being regarded by many as a possible source of newsprint, tissue, plywood and even livestock feed. Poplars provide choice winter and summer food for white-tailed deer and grouse, and the first prairie homes were built with and heated by poplar logs. Often considered a weed, the poplars of the Prairies are now facing a brighter future.

Water Salvage Potentials In Utah, Volume I. Open Water Evaporation And Monolayer Suppression Potential, Trevor C. Hughes, E. Arlo Richardson, James A. Franckiewicz

Reports

An estimate of the potential in Utah for evaporation suppression by the monolayer film method is presented. The model estimates evaporation suppression as a function of wind speed, a four parameter exposure factor, and reservoir size. The estimated suppression factors vary from 0 to 30 percent and average 11 percent of the statewide total annual evaporation. Estimates of May to October evaporation and suppression potential are calculated for each of the 227 impoundments in the surface water inventory. A forthcoming report in this series will examine the potential for evaporation suppression by thermal destratification. This procedure, which is already being …

Seed Reserves In Desert Soils, David W. Goodall, Suzanne J. Morgan May 1974

Seed Reserves In Desert Soils, David W. Goodall, Suzanne J. Morgan

Memorandum

Soil and litter samples were collected from the playa, playa fringe and bajada zones of the Jornada Validation Site. These samples were analyzed for their seed content, special attention being paid to spatial distribution. At the time of sampling, there was little litter on the soil surface, and the litter contained only a small proportion of the total seeds present.
