Mathematical Equations Describing Chick Performance And Carcass Composition As A Function Of Diet Protein And Energy Levels, Naiyana Nakhata
Mathematical Equations Describing Chick Performance And Carcass Composition As A Function Of Diet Protein And Energy Levels, Naiyana Nakhata
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Previous work at Utah State University determined minimum levels of different nutrients that would produce the maximum rate of gain or gain/feed ratio by feeding graded levels of the nutrients. Fitting broken lines to the data from work with one nutrient tended to underestimate the minimum requirement for that nutrient. It appeared that the response was not linear up to the level required to give maximum performance as the "broken line" approach to estimating the requirement assumes. It seemed worthwhile to try to describe the relation between ration level of a nutrient and chick performance by means of a mathematical …

Mirid Fauna Associated With Old-Field Goldenrods (Solidago: Compositae) In Ithaca, N.Y., Frank J. Messina
Biology Faculty Publications
The mirid fauna associated with oldfield goldenrods (Solidago spp.) was sampled from May 10-Oct. 25, 1977 in Ithaca, New York USA . Species (23) belonging to 16 genera were recorded; 97% of all individuals (1099) belong to 6 genera (Lygus, Slaterocoris, Lopidea, Plagiognathus, Adelphocoris and Polymerus). The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris, was the most common species. The dominant mirids can be divided into 2 fairly distinct guilds, L. lineolaris, 2 Plagiognathus spp. and A. rapidus feeding primarily on goldenrod flowers and 3 Slaterocoris spp., Lopidea media and Polymerus venaticus feeding on the immature foliage. The phenological pattern exhibited by …

Design And Operating Criteria For Rural Water Systems, James E. Garton, Gary L. Goodwin, Richard C. Peralta
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Rural homesites in the United States require the availability of high quality water. One means of meeting this need is with the rural water district, a system composed of tank storage and a pipe network serving a number of homes. The tanks are filled by pumping during periods of minimal water use and serve as the immediate water source for homes.
Optimum design requires consideration of not only immediate needs and economic factors but also the possibility of expansion at some future date. Accurate prediction of monthly usage rates is sometimes necessary to set contractural needs. Daily water use per …

Development Or Environment: An Economic Approach, John E. Keith
Development Or Environment: An Economic Approach, John E. Keith
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
In the years since the environmental movement has gained political power, United States policy with respect to the environment has developed into an all-or-nothing approach. Zero discharge limitations, although not currently in effect, are the final goals of Water Quality and Air Quality legislation. The interim limitations, Best Practical and Best Available Technology, are aimed at forcing producers into approaching the zero discharge requirement. There are two aspects of the zero approach that are troubling: first, there is a total disregard for the costs of achieving that good, just as there has been disregard of the pollution costs by producers; …

Consider various countries in the world. Those where the standard of living is high are where the farm sector has been sufficiently productive to release most of the manpower to the industrial and service sectors. Developing countries that include most of the people of the world are bound down to a majority of productive workers in the country producing the basic food and fiber for the rest of the country.

A Review Of Old And New Methodology For Distribution Research, Don C. Reading, John E. Keith
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Attempts to measure distribution changes have fallen into categories: measures of personal income or wealth distribution called personal distribution and measures of returns to factors of production called functional distribution. Specific measures of personal distribution consist of the traditional formula measures (Gini, Pareta, etc.) and the more recent use of functional measures or estimations (Beta, Gama, etc.). Functional distribution research utilizes production functions and other output models to measure changes either quantiles of income or in formula or functional measures. Evaluation of the various distribution measures depends upon the requirements of the specific research task. Care must be taken to …

A Total Residual Management Scheme For Alternative Energy Development Scenarios In Utah, Rangesan Narayanan, Bruce Bishop
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Residuals generated by the society through its production and consumption activities are discharged to the water, air and land resulting in the degradation of the ambient environmental quality. The economics of this problem is recognized to stem from the divergence between private and social costs leading to overproduction and consumption and hence resource misallocation in the economy. Most traditional analysis of environmental problems have been confined to resolving externalities involving a single residual. Two deficiencies must be recognized at the outset in such an approach. First, the degree of 'third pary' effect depends on the characteristic of the residual which …

Rural And Regional Economic Aspects Of Livestock And Wildlife/ Fisheries Use Of Rangelands In The West, Darwin B. Nielsen, E. Bruce Godfrey
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Western rangelands, both public and private, are important sources of forage for domestic livestock and grazing wildlife. In addition, the actions of both groups of animals have an impact on nongrazing wildlife and fish. Common use of the range resources by all these animals is the normal pattern. Over time, all of these uses have meshed together in some mix that has been influenced by biological forces as well as by the changing demands of man. In recent years, increasing demands by man for almost all uses of the range lands of the West has made the allocation of resources …

The enforcement of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendment of 1972 (PL92-500) has been primarily directed at "point sources" of pollution, that is, those polluters who se effluent is easily isolated and identified such as municipalities and industrial plants. Violators have been fined varying amounts depending upon the frequency, extent and type of violation. The long run goul of the legislation is, however, to eliminate all man-caused effluent--to reach a zero discharge level of effluents for all activities. If and when these standards are applied to irrigated agriculture several problems may appear, both in the attempt to enforce effluent …

Faculty Honor Lectures
A growing concern for the welfare of endangered or threatened plant and animal species has developed during the past few years, coinciding with an awareness of mankind's deleterious influence on the environment. Technological man has altered vast areas of the earth's surface to such an extent that many species have been endangered or made extinct. Transcontinental highways, shopping malls, industrial parks, home sites where they shouldn't be, and huge acreages turned over by the plow for monocultures, have taken a toll on our native vegetation to such an extent that many species have either lost their diversity or have disappeared. …

presented his Report on the Arid Lands of the United States with a More Detailed Account of the Lands of Utah to Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz. The report was not so much a careful scientific report, but a distillation of Powell's experiences in the arid regions and a compilation of his recommendations. The paper "was less a report than a program - even, some western congressmen would begin to say, a manifesto, a revolution" (Stegner 1962). Stegner wrote:
It would ultimately be recognized as one of the most important books ever written about the West, and it was …

Inhibition Of Hydroxyindole-0-Methyl Transferase Activity By Guanosine 3' ,5'-Cyclic Phosphate In Rat, Sparrow, And Bovine Pineal Glands, Kenneth Stafford Snow
Biology
The purpose of the research was to ascertain the effect of guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate on hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity in laboratory female rats, a free-living population of male and female house sparrows, and bovine pineal glands obtained from the abbatoir, in vitro. The data showed that guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate significantly inhibited hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity in all three species, but the bovine pineal preparation was the least sensitive. From these data, it appears that guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate acts as a second messenger to the neurotransmitter norepinephrine for the control of hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity as follows: Darkness effects the release …

Non-Linear Ordination: Field And Computer Simulation Testing Of A New Method, Donald L. Phillips
Biology
Recent studies suggest problems resulting from using essentially linear ordination techniques on non-linear ecological data. A new non-linear method, termed polynomial ordination, was developed in response to these problems. Its effectiveness was compared to that of two standard techniques, Bray-Curtis ordination and principal components analysis, by testing with both simulated and field data. The original species axes are resolved into their principal components. If significant curvilinear relationships between principal components are present, new axes are defined along these curves. The positions of the sample points along the axes are then coordinatized. Using simulated data, the coordinates of the sample points …
