An Economic Evaluation Of The Investments Made As Part Of The Pleasant View Allotment Management Plan, E. Bruce Godfrey
An Economic Evaluation Of The Investments Made As Part Of The Pleasant View Allotment Management Plan, E. Bruce Godfrey
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
As a result of the above agreement, the BLM spent approximately 412 thousand dollars on various range improvements (e.g. pipelines, wel!s, fences, seedings, spring developments) between fiscal year 1967 and 1976. In addition, the grazing association spent over $2,000 in 1973 for a fence and pipeline and more than $3, 000 in 1971 on various spray projects. Thus, it is estimated that more than 415 thousand dollars were spent on range improvements in the Allotment from 1967 through fiscal year 1976 (June 1977). The 415 thousand dollars spent does not represent all of the investment costs that were spent in …

Its Time For Third World Governments To Increase The Effectiveness Of Technical Assistance, Allen Lebaron
Its Time For Third World Governments To Increase The Effectiveness Of Technical Assistance, Allen Lebaron
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
It is possible to detect two intertwined arguments in the many complaints about lack of effectiveness or "failures" of technical assistance programs. The first is that the major U.S. donor, USAID, has a cumbersome structure that has evolved to serve only bureacratic ends (3). The second is that we have not learned how to do the job (2). Of course donor agencies have their problems and I have recently helped to take a stab at delineating some of them (6). Also, it is always possible to learn and improve (even though it is my opinion that we already have quite …

Critique Of Senate Bill 2626 The Proposed "Consumer And Agricultural Protection Act Of 1978", Jay C. Andersen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Many farmers and ranchers are now facing severe financial stress. Since 1974, farm prices have been seriously disadvantageous to farmers. In these conditions, I accept the premise that farm prices are unacceptably low. There seems to be some sentiment to come to the aid of farmers, but hard decisions must be made in the face of lack information and a lot of misinformation.
Consumption Of Alfalfa By Adult Alfalfa Weevils, Claron D. Bjork
Consumption Of Alfalfa By Adult Alfalfa Weevils, Claron D. Bjork
Biology
Workers usually ignore damage to alfalfa by feeding adult alfalfa weevils because: (1) weevil feeding is prolonged and relatively undramatic, (2) it is difficult to sample adults because they drop to the ground, and (3) most adults, during summer, feed at night. Adult weevils were studied on caged alfalfa in the field and in the laboratory using alfalfa leaf disks. Feeding intakes were determined after 2 days, using dry weight. Both newly developed adults and old adults immediately following overwintering, were studied under various light and temperature conditions. Five new adults per recently harvested plant reduced old stem length by …
Prostaglandins, 3' ,5'-Guanosine Monophosphate, Testosterone And 2' ,4'-Dibromoacetophenone And Contractility Of Rat Seminiferous Tubules In Vitro, Craig H. Farr
Biology
The effects of prostaglandins (PGs) F2α and E2, 3 ',5 '-guanosine monophosphate (C-GMP), testosterone and 2,4'-dibromoacetophenone (DBA) on the contractility of rat seminiferous tubules in vitro were ascertained, measuring contractile frequency, magnitude of contractions and tubular diameter. PGF2α increased the frequency and tonus in a dose dependent manner, but magnitude of contraction was not significantly modified by PGF2α. Frequency and tonus were decreased in a dose-dependent manner by PGE2 while the magnitude of contractions was not significantly affected. C-GMP increased the frequency of contractions and tonus whereas the magnitude of contractions decreased with increasing concentrations. Testosterone decreased the frequency of …
Should Nonfat Solids Be Used In Pricing Grade A Milk?, Rondo A. Christensen
Should Nonfat Solids Be Used In Pricing Grade A Milk?, Rondo A. Christensen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Research has demonstrated that the average composition of producer milk in the United States is approximately 3.7 percent butterfat, 8.7 percent nonfat solids, and 87.6 percent serum (water). The combination of these three components varies by cow, age of cow, month of lactation, season of the year, herd, breed, and feeding program. Nonfat solids consist of l actose, protein, and minerals. Minerals and lactose are quite constant in milk. Most of the variability in nonfat solids is caused by protein fluctuation. It goes up and down with butterfat but not by the same amount. On the average, for each 1 …
Synchronous Flocking In Dunlins (Calidris Alpina): The Chorus Girl Hypothesis, Wayne K. Potts
Synchronous Flocking In Dunlins (Calidris Alpina): The Chorus Girl Hypothesis, Wayne K. Potts
Biology
The Chorus Girl Hypothesis (CGH) is presented to explain the rapid transfer of information through a flock during synchronous maneuvers. The primary feature of the hypothesis is that flock members receive information concerning the maneuver in advance of the leading edge of the maneuver wave. This advance warning allows flock members to time their own execution of the maneuver to coincide with the arrival of the maneuver wave, essentially eliminating the relatively large time lags that would be associated with a neighbor-to-neighbor transfer of information. Predictions from the CGH and the alternative Quick Reaction Hypothesis are tested. Observations suggest 11 …
Toxicity Of Carbofuran, Landrin, Croneton, And Aminocarb In Relation To Age, Sex, And Pretreatment With Piperonyl Butoxide Of Alfalfa Leafcutting Bees, Megachile Pacifica, Hani J. Al-Attar
Biology
For both sexes of leafcutter bee, the susceptibility of carbofuran, croneton and aminocarb insecticides was found to be age-dependent. The bees became more susceptible to the insecticides as the adults aged. The LD50 values for carbofuran toxicity to 1- and 4-day old male and female bees were 1.02, 0.5 (males), 1.6 and 0.78 (females) μ g/g respectively; for aminocarb 1.5, 1.3 (males) 1.9 and 1.5 (females) μ g/g; for croneton 31.02, 23.8 (males), 52.14 and 28 (females) μ g/g, and landrin to 1-day old female bees, 29.3 μ g/g. One- and four-day old males or females were susceptible to carbofuran …
An Evaluation Of Heart Rate As A Measure Of Daily Metabolism In Pigeons (Columba Livia), Robert K. Flynn
An Evaluation Of Heart Rate As A Measure Of Daily Metabolism In Pigeons (Columba Livia), Robert K. Flynn
Biology
A positive, linear relationship of heart rate to metabolic rate, as measured by oxygen consumption, was demonstrated in each of seven pigeons (Columba livia). The linear regression equations which describe this relationship were pooled to yield two equations from each of two trials, six weeks apart. A significant shift in the slopes of these lines occurred within the 6-week period between trials. V02 - air temperature data extrapolated to a body temperature of 40.7°C at zero metabolism and thermal conductance of -0.23. The individual regression equations were used in conjunction with average 24-hour heart rate to predict the existence metabolism …
The Floral Biology Of Acer Grandidentatum Nutt., Virginia L. Klomps
The Floral Biology Of Acer Grandidentatum Nutt., Virginia L. Klomps
Biology
The floral biology of Acer grandidentatum Nutt. was studied on flowers from excised branches in the greenhouse and on trees in the field. Studies on Flowering Time Sequence both in the greenhouse and in the field showed that two types of flowers occur, male flowers with stamens only, and functionally female flowers which bear stamens that do not release pollen. Morphological development of both male and female flowers was found to follow a distinct pattern of development which is described. Results showed that A. grandidentatum is dichogamous, male and female flowers reaching and completing anthesis at different times, and that …
The Effect Of Architectural Variation In Habitat On A Spider Community: An Experimental Field Study -- With Special Reference To Resource Partitioning, James Vincent Robinson
The Effect Of Architectural Variation In Habitat On A Spider Community: An Experimental Field Study -- With Special Reference To Resource Partitioning, James Vincent Robinson
Biology
Spider community acceptance of, and segregation by, architectural configuration was investigated for the spiders of Green Canyon in northern Utah. Modular habitat units consisting of 30.48 centimeter (1 foot) cubes of chicken wire supporting internal strands of macrame jute tied in different orthogonal configurations were used. Configurations including all three axes were tested at two strand densities. The primary null hypothesis tested, that spider species use structures independent of architecture, was rejected in favor of the alternate hypothesis that spider species differentially use structures dependent upon architecture. Of the eight most abundant species, two showed preferences for horizontal substrata and …
Host Plants Of The Sugarbeet Root Maggot Tetanops Myopaeformis (Von Röder), Glenn G. Mahrt
Host Plants Of The Sugarbeet Root Maggot Tetanops Myopaeformis (Von Röder), Glenn G. Mahrt
Biology
The sugarbeet root maggot is supposedly native to North America, yet it was previously known to develop only on Beta vulgaris, a plant introduced from Europe. Various authors reported finding eggs or infested plants of lamb's quarter (Chenopodium album), redroot (Amaranthus retroflexus), prostrate pigweed (Amaranthus blitoides), black nightshade (Solanum nigrum), and curly dock (Rumex crispus). Field, greenhouse, and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the native or alternate hosts of the sugarbeet root maggot and their relative suitability as hosts. In the field, suspected hosts and related plants were surveyed and subjected to sugarbeet root maggot flies under artificial and …

A Follow-Up Study Of The Distributive Education Graduates Of Sky View High School 1972-1976, Thomas J. Broberg
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Distributive education is an instructional program that is designed to prepare people for careers in the distributive or marketing sector of the economy. Crawford and Meyer give a generally accepted definition of distributive education as:
... a vocational instructional program designed to meet the needs of persons who have entered or are preparing to enter a distributive occupation or an occupation requiring competency in one or more of the marketing functions. It offers instructions in marketing, merchandising, related management, and personal development (Crawford and Meyer, 1972, p.2)
Educators in the distributive education field traditionally have agreed that the curriculum should …

Status Of Junior High School Typing Programs In The State Of Utah, Jane Frances Blair
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The following statement was made by Tonne, Popham, and Freeman in 1965:
With typewriting being offered in one-third of the junior high schools, with three-fourths of them starting this program within the last ten years, and with almost three-fourth of the schools reporting an increase in enrollment within the past year, it is obvious that a prospective typewriting teacher may well expect to find himself in a junior high school
Sanborn stated:
Personal-use typewriting belongs to the ninth grade, either in junior high school or in a four-year high school. Placed here, it not only affords the student the opportunity …

Job Qualification And Activities Of Post Secondary Cooperative Education Coordinators In Utah, Carl L. Grunander
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
"While a 1973 English major tends bar in a local nightspot, a social work graduate labors in a steel mill. A math major washes dishes in Florida, an education graduate works as a bank teller and a psychology major serves cocktails in Maine." (Jolly & Pierce, 1976, p . 2) . As these examples point out, there is a great need for our institutions of higher learning to be more responsive to the needs of the job market today.
For the past several years, colleges and universities have been criticized on the basis that they do not prepare young people …

A Survey Study Of Employer And Student Interest In A Possible General Marketing Program At Snow College, Ephraim, Utah, Rick L. Dove
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
There are many definitions of distributive education. Lucy Crawford defines distributive education as follows:
Distributive education is a vocational instructional program designed to meet the needs of persons who have entered or are preparing to enter a distributive occupation or an occupation requiring competency in one or more of the marketing functions. It offers instruction in marketing, merchandising, related management and personal development. (Crawford & Meyer, 1972, p. 2)
Crawford and Meyer call distributive education "the people-center member of the vocational education family" (1972, p. vii) . Distributive education is a program of instruction for those who are interested in …
A Study Of The Feasibility Of A Two-Year Retail Marketing Program At Southern Utah State College, John R. Pruitt
A Study Of The Feasibility Of A Two-Year Retail Marketing Program At Southern Utah State College, John R. Pruitt
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
According to Klieforth (1969), "technology, business, industry, communications, and other factors affecting our economic life are changing rapidly. Our educational system must keep up with these changes and prepare our youth for the world of work." Although many of our young people will desire a four-year degree (and in some cases, higher degrees), many are inclined toward a shorter, formal post-secondary education.
As evidenced by the phenomenal growth and development of the two-year colleges in the first half of this century (Goddard, 1962) many of our young people are looking at more vocational and technical education than ever before. This …

An Analysis Of Trends Affecting Collection Growth At The Merrill Library, Richard Brian Schockmel
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The impetus for this paper arose out of a concern for the future of acquisitions at the Merrill Library. The common denominator between all disciplines represented in a university environment, the accumulation and dissemination of knowledge, is embodied in the academic library. The quest for knowledge often begins in the library; and the results of scholarly investigations are deposited on its shelves. As the quantity of published information increases, the importance of library collections as a vital element in the university community becomes increasingly evident.
In recent years, American academic library collections have suffered in the face of double-digit inflation. …
