Predicted Diurnal Variations Of Electron Density For Three High-Latitude Incoherent Scatter Radars, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk Jan 1982

Predicted Diurnal Variations Of Electron Density For Three High-Latitude Incoherent Scatter Radars, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk

All Physics Faculty Publications

We have used a high‐latitude ionospheric model to predict the diurnal variations of electron density that should be observed by the EISCAT, Chatanika and Millstone Hill incoherent scatter facilities. Our calculations were for a strong convection model without substorms. Our results provide an indication of the quantitative differences in measured electron density that are expected when the three radars probe the high‐latitude ionosphere simultaneously. The differences are significant and vary with altitude, latitude, local time, and season, and are associated with the UT dependence of the high‐latitude ionosphere which results from the displacement between the geomagnetic and geographic poles.

Observations Of The Diurnal Dependence Of The High-Latitude F Region Ion Density By Dmsp Satellites, Jan Josef Sojka, W. John Raitt, Robert W. Schunk, F. J. Rich, R. C. Sagalyn

All Physics Faculty Publications

Data from the DMSP F2 and F4 satellites for the period December 5-10, 1979, have been used to study the diurnal dependence of the high-latitude ion density at 800-km altitude. A 24-hour periodicity in the minimum orbital density (MOD) during a crossing of the high-latitude region is observed in both the winter and summer hemispheres. The phase of the variation in MOD is such that it has a minimum during the 24-hour period between 0700 and 0900 UT. Both the long term variation of the high-latitude ion density on a time scale of days, and the orbit by orbit variations …

Salt lake County, Utah's major population center, continues to experience rapid urban growth. The Impacts of urbanization on land use patterns and natural resources in the county are of particular Interest to both state and local policy makers and planners. The effect of urban development on a dwindling agricultural land base and water resources must be assessed to allow a rational basis for future water allocation and land use planning .

A Transport Equation Theory Of Electron Scattering, D. J. Fathers, P. Rez Jan 1982

A Transport Equation Theory Of Electron Scattering, D. J. Fathers, P. Rez

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The use of the Boltzmann transport equation to describe electron scattering in electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis is discussed. A method of solution is given in which the transport equation is divided into angle and energy intervals. This gives rise to a number of coupled first order differential equations. Separation into forward and backward travelling components of the electron flux distribution enables the correct boundary conditions to be imposed. Solutions are derived which take the form of matrix operators analytic in both depth and target thickness. These matrices allow derivation of other physical quantities such as X-ray or Auger …

Monte Carlo Calculations On The Spatial And Angular Distributions Of High Energy Electron Beams In Amorphous And Polycrystalline Films, J. L. Balladore, J. P. Martinez, J. Trinquier, B. Jouffrey Jan 1982

Monte Carlo Calculations On The Spatial And Angular Distributions Of High Energy Electron Beams In Amorphous And Polycrystalline Films, J. L. Balladore, J. P. Martinez, J. Trinquier, B. Jouffrey

Scanning Electron Microscopy

We study the plural scattering of electrons in amorphous and polycrystalline films. The incident electron energy ranges from 0.1 to 3 MeV. The cross sections are obtained by measuring the transmission coefficient for targets of gold, silver, aluminium and carbon. The partial elastic cross section is calculated from Lenz's theory using a Wentzel-Yukawa model for the atomic potential of the scattering atom. In the case of inelastic interactions, we take into account either scattering by a free atom (Morse's approximation) or scattering by plasmon creation (relativistic theory of Ashley Ritchie). From these results, we solve the problem of electron transport …

The Role Of The Background In Auger Electron Spectroscopy, H. E. Bishop Jan 1982

The Role Of The Background In Auger Electron Spectroscopy, H. E. Bishop

Scanning Electron Microscopy

In Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) the characteristic Auger peaks are superimposed on a relatively high continuum of back-scattered electrons. In the commonly used differential mode of recording Auger spectra, the influence of the background appears through its contribution to the noise and the enhancement of the Auger signal that makes a backscattering correction necessary in quantitative AES. With the increased use of low incident beam currents to achieve high spatial resolution, the direct spectrum is increasingly used, so that a better understanding of the background is desirable. In this paper the variations of the background with atomic number, incident beam …

Monte Carlo Simulation Of Electron Scattering In Resist Film/Substrate Targets, Kenji Murata Jan 1982

Monte Carlo Simulation Of Electron Scattering In Resist Film/Substrate Targets, Kenji Murata

Scanning Electron Microscopy

First the fundamentals of resist modelling required to implement an analysis of developed resist patterns were studied, which represents the relationship between the energy deposited by incident electrons and the solubility characteristics of a positive or negative resist. Next, two models of single elastic scattering and fast secondary (knock-on) electron production were studied for Monte Carlo simulation of electron scattering in resist film/substrate targets, and the statistical errors of Monte Carlo results were evaluated. Finally, problems in electron beam lithography were investigated with the simulation. The exposure intensity distribution was studied with the two models. A comparison between Monte Carlo …

Cyclotron Resonance Effects On Stochastic Acceleration Of Light Ionospheric Ions, Nagendra Singh, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka Jan 1982

Cyclotron Resonance Effects On Stochastic Acceleration Of Light Ionospheric Ions, Nagendra Singh, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka

All Physics Faculty Publications

Numerical studies on the interaction of electrostatic hydrogen cyclotron (EHC) waves with light ionospheric ions, such as He+, show that when the wave number ratio k⊥/kll ≤ 10 resonant effects are important in the stochastic heating of the ions. When k⊥/kll > 10 an appreciable acceleration occurs even though the cyclotron‐resonant effects are absent. As the parallel wave number increases, causing k⊥/kll to decrease (< 10), the number of accelerated ions and the perpendicular and parallel energization increase.

Ionospheric Hot Spot At High Latitudes, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka Jan 1982

Ionospheric Hot Spot At High Latitudes, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka

All Physics Faculty Publications

A hot spot (or spots) can occur in the high‐latitude ionsophere depending on the plasma convection pattern. The hot spot corresponds to a small magnetic local time‐magnetic latitude region of elevated ion temperatures located near the dusk and/or dawn meridians. For asymmetric convection electric field patterns, with enhanced flow in either the dusk or dawn sector of the polar cap, a single hot spot should occur in association with the strong convection cell. However, on geomagnetically disturbed days, two strong convection cells can occur, and hence, two hot spots should exist. The hot spot should be detectable when the electric …

Seasonal Variations Of The High-Latitude F Region For Strong Convection, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, W. John Raitt

All Physics Faculty Publications

We combined a plasma convection model with an ionospheric-atmospheric composition model in order to study the seasonal variations of the high-latitude F region for strong convection. Our numerical study produced time-dependent, three-dimensional, ion density distributions for the ions NO+, O2 +, N2 +, O+, N+, and He+. We covered the high-latitude ionosphere above 42°N magnetic latitude and at altitudes between 160 and 800 km for a time period of one complete day. From our study we found the following: (1) For strong convection, the high-latitude ionosphere exhibits a significant UT variation both during winter and summer. (2) In general, the …

Regional Hydrology Of The Green River-Moab Area, Northwestern Paradox Basin, Utah, United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Green River-Moab area encompasses about 7,800 square kilometers or about 25 percent of the Paradox basin. The entire Paradox basin is a part of the Colorado Plateaus that is underlain by a thick sequence of evaporite (salt) beds of Pennsylvanian age. The rock units that underlie the area have been grouped into hydrogeologic units based on their water-transmitting ability. Confining beds consist of evaporite beds of mostly salt, and overlying and underlying thick sequences of rocks with minimal permeability; above and below these confining beds are aquifers. The upper Mesozoic sandstone aquifer, probably is the most permeable hydrogeologic unit …

Use Of Multispectral Scanner Images For Assessment Of Hydrothermal Alteration In The Marysvale, Utah, Mining Area, United States Geological Survey Jan 1982

Use Of Multispectral Scanner Images For Assessment Of Hydrothermal Alteration In The Marysvale, Utah, Mining Area, United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Multispectral images of an area near Marysvale, Utah, were collected by using the airborne U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) 24-channel Bendix multispectral scanner; they were analyzed to define areas of hydrothermally altered, potentially mineralized rocks. Hydrothermally altered rocks, particularly volcanic rocks affected by solutions rich in sulfuric acid, are commonly characterized by concentrations of argillic minerals such as alunite and kaolinite. These minerals are important for identifying hydrothermally altered rocks in multispectral images because they have an intense absorption band centered near a wavelength of 2.2 um. Unaltered volcanic rocks commonly lack these minerals and hence do not …

La Plata, 1890-1893: Boom, Bust And Controversy, Davis Rich Lewis

History Faculty Publications

La Plata was a small mining town nested in the south end of Cache County that flourished from 1891 until 1893, During its three-year heyday it caught and held the attention of all northern Utah. Today, the ghost town of La Plata reposes in relative obscurity, remembered by only a few, having little historical significance and even less historical evidence of its brief existence. But from the evidence that does exist, mainly in the form of contemporary newspaper accounts, a reconstruction of the town and the social, political, and economic controversies that surrounded its boom and bust is possible.

We improved our high-latitude ionospheric model by including thermal conduction and diffusion-thermal heat flow terms in the ion energy equation so that we could study the ion temperature variations in the daytime high-latitude F layer in a region poleward of the auroral oval for steady state conditions at local noon. From our study we found that (1) The variation of Ti with solar cycle, season, and geomagnetic activity closely follows the Tn variation. The general trend is for higher temperatures in summer than in winter, at solar maximum than at solar minimum, and for active magnetic conditions than for quiet …
