Projected Near-Future Flooding And Warming Increase Graminoid Biomass In A High-Latitude Coastal Wetland, Matteo Petit Bon, A. Joshua Leffler, Katharine C. Kelsey, Tyler J. Williams, Karen H. Beard

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

  1. With rapid climate warming, some coastal high-latitude ecosystems are experiencing more frequent tidal floods. Yet little is known about tundra plant-community responses to flooding, and whether Arctic warming may modulate such responses.

  2. In a 2-year, full-factorial field experiment in coastal tundra wetlands of the Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y-K) Delta (western Alaska), we simulated periodic tidal flood events at two severities under both ambient and warmed summer conditions and measured above-ground plant-community responses. Low-severity flooding represented overbank flooding 1 day per month, which is consistent with projections in the next 5 years. High-severity flooding represented a more impactful flooding regime (three consecutive days …

Recent Climate Change In Utah, 1870-2023, Scott Hotaling, Kendall Becker Sep 2024

Recent Climate Change In Utah, 1870-2023, Scott Hotaling, Kendall Becker

All Current Publications

Climate change is impacting Utah. Forty-five years of temperature data show that Utah is steadily warming, which, in turn, is driving declines in winter snowpack, shifting the timing and amount of available water, increasing fire risk, and causing ecological change. This fact sheet addresses changes in Utah's temperature, precipitation and snowpack, streamflow, wildfire, and ecology.

Insufficient access to safe and nutritious foods can severely impact physical, mental, and social well-being. Without proper nutrition, focus levels, energy, and immune system support can decline, leading to long-term health challenges. This fact sheet addresses the pillars of food security and reviews government programs that help address insufficient food. It also offers recommendations of ways to volunteer to address the problem in your community.

Time-Series Feature Selection For Solar Flare Forecasting, Yagnashree Velanki, Pouya Hosseinzadeh, Soukaina Filali Boubrahimi, Shah Muhammad Hamdi

Computer Science Student Research

Solar flares are significant occurrences in solar physics, impacting space weather and terrestrial technologies. Accurate classification of solar flares is essential for predicting space weather and minimizing potential disruptions to communication, navigation, and power systems. This study addresses the challenge of selecting the most relevant features from multivariate time-series data, specifically focusing on solar flares. We employ methods such as Mutual Information (MI), Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR), and Euclidean Distance to identify key features for classification. Recognizing the performance variability of different feature selection techniques, we introduce an ensemble approach to compute feature weights. By combining outputs from multiple …

Performance-Tunable Thermal Barrier Coating For Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composites Via Flame Spraying, Heejin Kim, Kandasamy Praveen, Min Wook Lee, Juhyeong Lee Sep 2024

Performance-Tunable Thermal Barrier Coating For Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composites Via Flame Spraying, Heejin Kim, Kandasamy Praveen, Min Wook Lee, Juhyeong Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are essential for improving the heat resistance of materials operating in high-temperature environments. This paper proposes a new method for manufacturing double-layered TBC with graded porosity for carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. The TBC was created by a flame spraying process, consisting of relatively dense and porous layers: (1) a dense layer was produced by spraying yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) particles directly onto neat carbon fabric substrate and (2) a porous layer was prepared by co-spraying YSZ particles with sacrificial polyetheretherketone (PEEK) particles. The porosity of the porous layer was controlled by varying a PEEK injection distance …

Remote Sensing Detection Of Growing Season Freeze-Induced Defoliation Of Montane Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides) In Southern Utah, Usa, Timothy E. Wright, Yoshimitsu Chikamoto, Joseph D. Birch, James A. Lutz Sep 2024

Remote Sensing Detection Of Growing Season Freeze-Induced Defoliation Of Montane Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides) In Southern Utah, Usa, Timothy E. Wright, Yoshimitsu Chikamoto, Joseph D. Birch, James A. Lutz

Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research

Growing season freeze events pose a threat to quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), leading to canopy defoliation, reduced vigor, and increased mortality, especially for declining montane populations western North America. Detecting the spatial distribution and progression of this damage is challenging due to limited in situ observations in this region. This study represents the first attempt to comprehensively resolve the spatial extent of freeze-induced aspen canopy damage in southern Utah using multispectral remote sensing data. We developed an approach to detect the spatial and temporal dynamics of freeze-damaged aspen stands, focusing on a freeze event from 8-9 June 2020 …
