A Review Of Plant–Microbe Interactions In The Rhizosphere And The Role Of Root Exudates In Microbiome Engineering, Anagha Wankhade, Emma Wilkinson, David W. Britt, Amita Kaundal Jun 2025

A Review Of Plant–Microbe Interactions In The Rhizosphere And The Role Of Root Exudates In Microbiome Engineering, Anagha Wankhade, Emma Wilkinson, David W. Britt, Amita Kaundal

Biological Engineering Student Research

Microbial interactions within the rhizosphere are fundamental to plant health, influencing nutrient availability, stress tolerance, and pathogen resistance. Beneficial microbes, such as plant growth-promoting microbes (PGPMs), including bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, enhance plant resilience through mechanisms like nutrient solubilization, phytohormone production, and pathogen suppression via antimicrobial compounds and siderophores. Root exudates, composed of sugars, organic acids, and secondary metabolites, act as chemoattractants that shape the rhizosphere microbiome by recruiting beneficial microbes. Microbial metabolites can, in turn, modulate plant physiology and exudate profiles, thereby reinforcing mutualistic interactions. Stress conditions alter exudate composition, enabling plants to attract specific microbes that aid in …

Influence Of Age At Harvest And Packaging Conditions On Color Stability Of Bovine Psoas Major Muscle, Xiao Lu, Xin Luo, Sulaiman K. Matarneh Jun 2025

Influence Of Age At Harvest And Packaging Conditions On Color Stability Of Bovine Psoas Major Muscle, Xiao Lu, Xin Luo, Sulaiman K. Matarneh

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Science Student Research

This study investigated the effect of cattle age on the color stability of Psoas major steaks under different packaging conditions, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film packaging, high-oxygen-modified atmosphere packaging (HiOx-MAP), and carbon monoxide modified atmosphere packaging (CO-MAP), over a 14-day storage period. Steaks from old cows had a greater myoglobin content than those from young animals (p < 0.05), resulting in a darker beef color. Regardless of animal age, steaks in PVC and HiOx-MAP exhibited poor color stability during storage, as evidenced by the low color intensity and high surface metmyoglobin (MetMb; p < 0.05). These samples also exhibited a reduced MetMb reducing activity (MRA) and oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and higher 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels, with these effects being evident in steaks from mature cows. In contrast, steaks stored in CO-MAP had greater redness, MRA, and OCR, along with lower surface MetMb and TBARS levels (p < 0.05), contributing to the limited discoloration of steaks from both age groups. These findings suggest that while both harvest age and packaging affect the shelf stability of bovine steaks, packaging plays a more significant role. CO-MAP proved to be more effective than aerobic packaging and may mitigate age-related differences in color stability.

1. Ecological responses to climate change occur across vastly different time-scales, from minutes for physiological plasticity to decades or centuries for community turnover and evolutionary adaptation. Accurately predicting the range of ecosystem trajectories will require models that incorporate both fast processes that may keep pace with climate change and slower ones likely to lag behind and generate disequilibrium dynamics. However, the knowledge necessary for this integration is currently fragmented across disciplines.

2. We develop ‘ecological acclimation’ as a unifying framework to emphasize the similarity of dynamics driven by processes operating on dramatically different time-scales and levels of biological organization. The …

The Link Between Environmental Change And Invasive Species, Marion Murray, Meg Kast

All Current Publications

Climate change and invasive species represent two pressing environmental challenges facing our planet. Each poses a threat to global biodiversity and ecosystem stability, and together, they amplify the impacts of the other. As global temperatures rise and ecosystems are disrupted, new conditions are created that allow invasive species to spread more easily, establish themselves in new areas, and outcompete native species.

Designing Electric Vehicle Infrastructures And Opportunities To Benefit All Residents, Polly Parkinson, Emma Mecham, Fawn Groves, Ivonne Santiago, Amy Wilson-Lopez

Teacher Education and Leadership Student Research

Countries around the globe have set electric vehicle adoption goals to address environmental and health concerns, but engineering planners and community policy experts cannot separate the socioeconomic factors from transportation needs. This mixed-methods case study indicates that because transportation decisions are inextricably linked to health, work, and housing, EV adoption must also address multifaceted human needs. To avoid the transportation mistakes of the past, it is essential that people in communities are consulted in the adoption process and have opportunities so all may actively benefit from the infrastructures and economic growth caused by electrification. “If you don't know the space …

Aspen Bibliography

In North America, mixedwood management is being increasingly considered by natural resource managers as an alternative to single species management for a variety of ecological, economic, and cultural reasons. In northern Minnesota, USA, natural resource managers are increasingly using treatments to establish mixedwood forests in aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx, Populus grandientata Michx) dominated ecosystems by planting white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench). However, little quantitative information is known regarding differences between stand structure and composition in conventional aspen and aspen-white spruce during early stand development. To provide greater clarity for managers, we sampled 40 aspen stands across a chronosequence …

In 2016, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) released a research snapshot called “Voting and Civic Engagement Among Utah Women.”1 At the time, despite having a strong history of women’s political and civic involvement, Utah had fallen to the bottom of national rankings in terms of women’s political participation.2 In 2019 and 2021, UWLP released updates of this report, which showed some improvement in voter participation rates for both the United States (US) and for Utah women. Since 2016, the level of political participation among women in Utah and the US has grown, and civic engagement—a critical …

Potential Epigenetic Impacts Of Phytochemicals On Ruminant Health And Production: Connecting Lines Of Evidence, Sebastian P. Schreiber, Juan Villalba, Mirella L. Meyer-Ficca Jun 2025

Potential Epigenetic Impacts Of Phytochemicals On Ruminant Health And Production: Connecting Lines Of Evidence, Sebastian P. Schreiber, Juan Villalba, Mirella L. Meyer-Ficca

Wildland Resources Student Research

The once mysterious “dark matter of nutrition”, comprising countless plant derived secondary compounds, also known as phytochemicals, is now understood to have significant and wide-ranging effects on consumers, including myriad health benefits in humans and livestock. The selective consumption of phytochemically rich and diverse plants, in appropriate doses, by ruminants represents an adaptive means of therapeutic and prophylactic self-medication. Due to their chemical structure, phytochemicals have long been recognized as antioxidants. However, the mechanisms that underlie numerous additional phytochemical-based health benefits are generally less understood. These effects (i.e., anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anticarcinogenic effects) are likely related to epigenetic processes. Evidence …

Just Distribution Of Tree Canopy? A Digital Approach To Tree Equity, Alexandra G. Ponette-González, Matthew Fry, Daniella Hirschfeld, Jeff Rose, Evan Elderbrock

Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications

Trees in U.S. cities are unevenly and inequitably distributed. To address this challenge, planners increasingly use digital tools to prioritize areas and communities for tree projects. The goal is to achieve tree equity wherein all populations have access to the benefits of urban trees. Here we identify limitations and opportunities in the operationalization of the tree equity concept via digital platforms. We call on planners using digital tools in urban forest planning to (1) incorporate data that capture the heterogeneity of spaces in which urban trees grow, (2) include and support marginalized communities in urban forest planning, and (3) couple …

Roles Of Organic Agriculture For Water Optimization In Arid And Semi-Arid Regions, Shikha Sharma, Matt A. Yost, Jennifer R. Reeve

Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research

Water scarcity is a critical challenge in arid and semi-arid regions, where agricultural water consumption accounts for a significant portion of freshwater use. Conventional agriculture (CA) methods with high reliance on chemical and mechanical inputs often exacerbate this issue through soil degradation and water loss. This review aims to examine how different organic practices, such as mulching, cover cropping, composting, crop rotation, and no-till (NT) in combination with precision technologies, can contribute to water optimization, and it discusses the opportunities and challenges for the adoption and implementation of those practices. Previous findings show that organic agriculture (OA) may outperform CA …

Comparative Analysis Of Radiance-Based And Reflectance-Based Reflectance Retrievals, Mohammad Tahersima, Kurt Thome, Brian Wenny, Mehran Yarahmadi, Norvik Voskanian, Derrick Lampkin, Sarah Kay, Jeff Czapla-Myers, Nikolaus Anderson

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Early earth science imagers in the reflected solar part of the spectrum relied on a radiance-based SI-traceability path to top-of-atmosphere reflectance. More recent missions tend to use reflectance-based approaches as space-grade diffusers became better understood. The difference between the two approaches will become more important for next generation missions where low-cost, low-mass sensors shift back to a radiance-based approach and lower absolute uncertainties are becoming necessary. Radiance-based retrievals are so named because they rely on the absolute radio-metric calibration of the sensor to determine scene spectral radiance that is converted to reflectance using an assumed solar spectral irradiance model. Reflectance-based …

Calibration And Systems Engineering Collaboration, John Wilson Jun 2025

Calibration And Systems Engineering Collaboration, John Wilson

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Systems engineering and calibration engineering are critical to the efficient development, production, and operation of complex systems. Systems engineering provides the framework for the system lifecycle, ensuring stakeholder needs are met through integrated solutions. Calibration engineering ensures the accuracy, reliability, traceability of measurement, and compliance with standards. Coordination between system engineering and calibration ensures that instrumentation, control systems, and system performance are enabled. As the lifecycle coordinator, systems engineering relies on calibration engineers to reduce risks, optimize development, and ensure operational success.

However, the relationship between these disciplines is often poorly coordinated, as noted in tabletop discussions at CALCON 2024. …

The Ieee 4001 Standard For Hyperspectral Imaging, Torbjorn Skauli, John R. Gilchrist, Christopher Durell

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Describing the properties and performance of a hyperspectral camera is more complex than for a conventional camera. Still, up to now, hyperspectral cameras have been described largely in the same terms as conventional cameras, which fall short of what is needed to convey the actual performance to users and potential buyers. Responding to this situation, the IEEE Standards Association established a working group in 2018 to develop a new standard for hyperspectral imaging. More than 200 members of the hyperspectral community have taken part in the work, representing users, manufacturers, government labs and academia. This extensive work has resulted in …

Practical Anisotropy Of Reflectance Standards, Mark Helmlinger Jun 2025

Practical Anisotropy Of Reflectance Standards, Mark Helmlinger

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Factory calibration documents for sintered PTFE and painted reflectance standards specify diffuse hemispherical reflectance at 8 degrees incidence, nadir collection. This measurement is an isotropic mean of azimuth angles. In practice, targets are measured at very specific azimuthal incidence and collection angles, requiring more rigorous BRDF knowledge if certainties of less than 2% are desired. In this presentation, a practical method for determining the azimuthal dependence of nadir collected reflectance at various incident illumination zenith angles is described and discussed.

Spectral Quantum Efficiency Calibration Of Mid-Infrared Single Photon Detectors, Grant Teply Jun 2025

Spectral Quantum Efficiency Calibration Of Mid-Infrared Single Photon Detectors, Grant Teply

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors (SNSPDs) can count individual photon hits with a very high efficiency, a very low dark count rate, and very fine time resolution. Since the output is naturally digital, they are an especially promising technology for space missions including NASA’s Origins Space Telescope and Large Interferometer For Exoplanets (LIFE). Over the past 5 years, significant progress has been made in the development of SNSPDs that can sense lower energy photons such as those in the mid-infrared, but the quantum efficiency of these devices remains poorly quantified. The Low Background Infrared (LBIR) facility at NIST has a …
