Seapower, Geostrategic Relations, And Islandness: The World War Ii Destroyers For Bases Deal, Colin Flint
Seapower, Geostrategic Relations, And Islandness: The World War Ii Destroyers For Bases Deal, Colin Flint
Political Science Faculty Publications
The Destroyers for Bases deal was signed on March 27, 1941, and transferred fifty aging US destroyers to Great Britain in exchange for 99-year leases of bases on the British controlled islands of Newfoundland, Bermuda, Trinidad, Jamaica, Antigua, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, and one in British Guiana. The deal highlights how US strategic planners came to see the value of the islands because of their relationality. Three forms of relationality are discussed: the land/sea dialectic; spatial connectivity; and the changing geopolitical balance of power. Relationality is a factor in four strategic calculations: other islands; other continents; other oceans; and the …

Which Principal Is The Right Principal? Student Achievement, School Finances, And Community Stakeholders, Sarah Nielsen, Amanda Taggart
Teacher Education and Leadership Student Research
When a struggling high school may be placed on turnaround status during a bid for a school bond, the district considers replacing a beloved principal with a record of low test scores with an unpopular principal whose record shows increased student achievement. The school board must decide whether to prioritize finances, community support, student achievement, or state-level demands. This case presents many difficult decisions schools and districts are required to make. Key factors discussed in the case include principal turnover, student academic achievement, teacher retention, school culture, and power.

Computational Modeling For Decision-Making Under Climate Change Uncertainty: Reservoir Simulation Game, Julianne Quinn
All ECSTATIC Materials
Almost every decision you make is under uncertainty. Will I need a rain jacket in the afternoon? Will they say yes if I ask them out? Is 1 hour enough time to finish this assignment? Oftentimes, we can use computational modeling to simulate different scenarios of what might happen in the future to inform what decisions are best on average, or what decisions minimize the worst case outcome. For example, you could decide what player to draft for your Fantasy Football team by simulating player performance. In this activity, we will simulate how much water to release from a dam …

The Violence Of Competing Masculinities In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S Los Pazos De Ulloa, Zachary Erwin
The Violence Of Competing Masculinities In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S Los Pazos De Ulloa, Zachary Erwin
Decimonónica
Emilia Pardo Bazán’s Los pazos de Ulloa (1886) takes place in rural Galicia against the backdrop of Spain’s Revolution of 1868. Its plot is largely told through the eyes of Julián Álvarez, a young priest who travels from Santiago de Compostela to the once-grand and now- decaying Ulloa estate to become its new chaplain. There, he finds Pedro Moscoso, the de facto marquis of Ulloa, who is dominated by the estate’s peasant majordomo, Primitivo, and who has fathered an illegitimate son with his maid, Sabel, Primitivo’s daughter. Pedro marries his wealthy cousin, Nucha, in hopes of shoring up the Ulloa …

“Cintas Medio Borrosas”: Monumentalidad Y Memoria En Los Primeros Años Del Cinematógrafo, Alicia Cerezo

Not Just One, Many: Emasculation, Foreign Impositions, And The Crisis Of Masculinity In Máximo Soto Hall’S El Problema (1899), Greg C. Severyn
Decimonónica
Máximo Soto Hall’s 1899 novel El problema raises several debates: Is this Costa Rica’s first novel, despite the fact that Soto Hall was originally from Guatemala? Is this the first anti-imperialist novel in Latin America? Is this novel anti-imperialist at all, or is it pro-Yankee?1 Literary critic Álvaro Quesada Soto approaches these questions with a lighthearted one of his own: “¿No será la ambigüedad parte misma de un problema ideológico-discursivo que genera y da título al texto?” (“Aporías” 126). Quesada Soto refers, in part, to the ideological crisis facing Costa Rica in the novel, where the viability of the …

El “Genio De Las Ruinas”: Indagaciones Sobre Los Orígenes De La Silva “Atenas Y Palmira” De José María Heredia, Frederick Luciani

Santiago de Chile, September 18, 1845: General Diego José Benavente (1790-1867) read a speech about his involvement in the independence movement at the University of Chile. The attendants to his address included Manuel Bulnes, President of the Republic; Manuel Montt, Minister of Education; Andrés Bello, Rector of the University; and heads of the state institutions. In front of them, Benavente asserted that if independence heroes were alive, “cuánta ser[ía] su satisfacción y complacencia al ver la nación independiente [. . .] gozando profunda paz bajo la égida de sus instituciones [y marchando] hacia la realización de los altos fines que …
Shifting Critical Approaches To The Elusive Jewishness Of María By Jorge Isaacs, Naomi Lindstrom
Shifting Critical Approaches To The Elusive Jewishness Of María By Jorge Isaacs, Naomi Lindstrom
Decimonónica
This study examines and evaluates the ways in which critics have dealt with the question of a Jewish thematic current, self-awareness, or perspective in the much-reprinted 1867 novel María by the Colombian writer Jorge Isaacs (1837-1895). While scholars have long exhibited an awareness of Isaacs’s paternal Jewish descent and at times made observations concerning Jewish references or a Jewish outlook in the novel, it was Doris Sommer’s 1989 article “El mal de María: (Con)fusión en un romance nacional,” later included in her influential Foundational Fictions: The National Romances of Latin America (1991), that launched the current discussion over Jewish themes …

Nutrients
Ferric iron rapidly precipitates as FeOH and becomes biologically unavailable, so chelated iron is commonly used in liquid fertilization systems to keep it in solution. The most common chelating agents in agriculture are:
- EDDHA (ethylenediamine-N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid)
- DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid)
- EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)
- and for monocots in deep-flow hydroponics, HEDTA (also called HEEDTA)

Civil and Environmental Engineering
The concrete canoe project is put together as a response to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) issuance of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for their yearly competition. This year, the RFP expanded beyond its usual scope due to the influence of COVID-19, allowing more variability in the approach. While the requirements to design a hull, a mix design, and perform a structural analysis remained the same, the construction of the prototype was left as optional for each school. In place of the construction requirement, enhanced focus areas are implemented, letting the project have a broader scope with more …

Identification And Mitigation Of Harmful Algal Blooms In Mantua Reservoir, Jeffrey Kennedy, Timothy Place, Tyler Wallace, Steven White, Carolina Williams
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are capable of emitting cyanotoxins which are harmful to humans and animals. Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) occur when cyanobacteria multiply to great densities. Mantua Reservoir in Box Elder County, UT, experiences seasonal HABs, which has resulted in seasonal reservoir closures.
The EnVision team investigated the cause of HABs at Mantua Reservoir by collecting samples from the reservoir’s known point sources and frequently visited recreation areas. The samples were analyzed to determine total phosphorus, nitrate, and cyanotoxin concentrations. The team concluded that excessive phosphorus loading in the reservoir is most culpable for the annual HABs …
