Transgenic Expression Of Prunus Persica Salt Overly Sensitive 2 (Ppsos2) In Atsos2 Mutant Imparts Salt Tolerance In Arabidopsis, Vishal Singh

Student Research Symposium

Salinity is one of the major environmental stresses that affect crop growth and productivity. Almond crop has a great potential for Utah as a cash crop and salinity is one of the stresses affecting its growth and yield. Although almond trees are sensitive to salt stress, salinity-tolerant rootstocks can play a significant role in sustaining crop production in semiarid areas. Salinity tolerance has a complex mechanism with many genes acting in different pathways. Understanding the role of potential candidate genes is an important aspect of genomics assisted improvement of stress tolerance. In this study, functional complementation of the Prunus persica …

In this study, we are investigating the microbiome diversity of bulk soil, rhizosphere, and endosphere of Ceanothus velutinus, snowbrush. Ceanothus is an evergreen native plant that is usually found in dry areas and thrives well in harsh conditions. The snowbrush samples were collected from different locations 1920m, 1950m, …

Numerical Approximations Of Phase Field Models Using A General Class Of Linear Time-Integration Schemes, Zengyan Zhang Apr 2021

Numerical Approximations Of Phase Field Models Using A General Class Of Linear Time-Integration Schemes, Zengyan Zhang

Student Research Symposium

As a basic thermodynamic model, the essence of the phase field model is describing non-conservative field variables in the phase separation process, such as liquid-solid interface, dendritic flow, microstructure evolution in solids, etc. Due to its extensive applications in the literature, there are many approaches to develop numerical approximations for the phase field PDE models. However, most numerical schemes are designed specifically for a particular model, making their applications restricted. I will introduce a new family of linear and unconditionally energy stable schemes for phase field models and apply them to several typical examples to demonstrate the generality, accuracy, and …

Investigation Of An Incipient River Anticline Downstream Of Moab, Ut, Ray Poe Apr 2021

Investigation Of An Incipient River Anticline Downstream Of Moab, Ut, Ray Poe

Student Research Symposium

The landscape evolution of southeastern Utah is dominated by two factors: erosion of rocks by the Colorado River drainage system; and deformation of rocks by salt tectonics. Salt tectonic activity is ultimately due to the Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation underlying much of the red rock canyon area of southeastern Utah. The Paradox Formation is made of various ductile salts, which flow under pressure gradients. The incision of the Colorado River has unloaded pressure on the Paradox Formation, forming river anticlines in the Canyonlands of Utah; best exemplified by the Meander Anticline. This research conducts a structural analysis of Shafer Basin by …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Gender And Racial Background On Academic Wellbeing In Middle Childhood, Madison Thomas Apr 2021

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Gender And Racial Background On Academic Wellbeing In Middle Childhood, Madison Thomas

Student Research Symposium

Variation in stressors, due to ethnic background or culture, can interrupt academic progression (Benneret al., 2017). Furthermore, variation in academic opportunity and skill may lead to later societal inequalities, such as gender or racial pay gaps (Soland, 2018). Therefore, it is invaluable for research to address potential imbalances in the academic setting, as a perpetuation of issues has the potential to cultivate greater disparities in the future. However, there is little data that encompasses the impact of race and gender on students’ subjective academic wellbeing. Through analyzing race/ethnicity and gender differences in student subjective wellbeing, where intervention may be applied …

How To Survive A Cliff Jump: Throw Something!, Rafsan Rabbi Apr 2021

How To Survive A Cliff Jump: Throw Something!, Rafsan Rabbi

Student Research Symposium

Experimental evidence suggests the limit of human tolerance to water impact from free-fall is approximately 48 m, any free-fall water impact from greater heights are likely to be just as fatal as free-fall onto a solid surface. The danger comes from the impulse force reaching a high peak in a very short time span. One way of reducing the impulse is for another object to impact the surface first. We present a canonical consecutive sphere impact study showing that a sphere creating an underwater cavity reduces the impulse impact force felt by a trailing second sphere. Our proposed non-dimensional time …

Children's Literacy Center In Ghana, Africa, Aly Barlow Apr 2021

Children's Literacy Center In Ghana, Africa, Aly Barlow

Student Research Symposium

There is a shortage of education and literacy centers in Africa. The lack of facilities where people can learn to read and write is fueling many social issues including illiteracy. This low literacy rate then leads to life-long employment struggles, financial issues, marital problems, and poverty. The low education levels perpetuate poverty, and it has been shown that poverty levels are dependent and often dictated on knowing how to read and do math. The children's literacy center will encourage learning from a young age to hopefully curb the poverty cycle and also meet the educational needs of the local children …

Gender Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teaching, Audree Britte, Kiyan Irani Apr 2021

Gender Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teaching, Audree Britte, Kiyan Irani

Student Research Symposium

There is mixed evidence regarding the presence of gender bias in student evaluations of teaching (Foote, Harmon, & Mayo, 2003; Morgan et al., 2016). Given the importance placed on student evaluations of teaching in regards to promotion and tenure, it is essential to determine whether gender bias is present and to what extent (Laube, Massoni, Sprague, & Ferber, 2007). Many previous studies have shown there is strong evidence of implicit bias in the traits we expect to see from female and male professors, but these studies have been limited by how they identify the presence of bias (e.g. Basow, 1995; …

Roles Of Nad+ In Testicular Aging And Epigenetic Sperm Modifications, Renata Hoskova Apr 2021

Roles Of Nad+ In Testicular Aging And Epigenetic Sperm Modifications, Renata Hoskova

Student Research Symposium

Since 1980, the average age of first-time fathers has been increasing. With increased age, sperm chromatin quality and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) levels are reduced. In order to condense around protamines, sperm DNA undergoes breaks, at which time epigenetic reprogramming occurs. In humans, about 2% of DNA stays wound to histones in spermatozoa. Histones carry post-translational modifications that control gene activity and have the potential to transmit epigenetic information to the offspring. Analysis of epigenetic sperm modifications is being conducted within niacin deficient versus niacin replete mice. The experimental plan includes the characterization of histone exchange in elongating spermatids via …

Random Forest-Based Diffusion Information Geometry For Supervised Visualization And Data Exploration, Jake Rhodes Apr 2021

Random Forest-Based Diffusion Information Geometry For Supervised Visualization And Data Exploration, Jake Rhodes

Student Research Symposium

Most dimensionality reduction techniques to date are unsupervised; they do not take class labels into account (e.g., PCA, MDS, t-SNE, Isomap). Such methods require large amounts of data and are often sensitive to noise that may obfuscate important patterns in the data. Various attempts at supervised dimensionality reduction methods that take into account auxiliary annotations (e.g., class labels) have been successfully implemented with goals of increased classification accuracy or improved data visualization. In this paper, we describe a novel supervised visualization technique based on random forest proximities and a diffusion-based information geometry. We show, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the advantages …

Rising Popularity Of Fractional Share Trading Endangers Stability Of U.S. Exchange Markets, Yana Bogoev Apr 2021

Rising Popularity Of Fractional Share Trading Endangers Stability Of U.S. Exchange Markets, Yana Bogoev

Student Research Symposium

The democratization of investing, through brokerages that provide fractional share trading options may highlights growth trends in the stock market, however, exposes the market’s existing safety mechanisms to vulnerabilities. Fractional shares—a portion of an equity stocks of a company—cannot be traded on the open market and must be sold through major brokerages. As more people engage in trading on public stock markets, enhanced security measures in brokerages’ and within the exchanges’ systems will help ensure the stock exchanges’ security, as well as the stability of the U.S. economy. Insight on the existing regulation of fractional share trading on the market, …
