Oral Interpretation Specialists In Utah Schools: A Proposal, Barbara A. Vincze May 1970

Oral Interpretation Specialists In Utah Schools: A Proposal, Barbara A. Vincze

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated different methods of teaching literature to identify those techniques that result in either apathy or motivation. It was found that traditional literature teaching methods do not result in student motivation for increased reading, Instances were cited in which an oral approach to literature teaching was effectively used to achieve the desired results of student motivation, interest, and comprehension. Oral interpretation as a tool for motivation was discussed. Both empirical studies in that field and reading authorities' opinions were examined to discover the unique contributions oral interpretation could offer to literature teaching.

The Use Of Defensiveness As A Covariate Of Self-Report In The Assessment Of Self-Concept Among Navajo Adolescents, Bruce Leon Arneklev May 1970

The Use Of Defensiveness As A Covariate Of Self-Report In The Assessment Of Self-Concept Among Navajo Adolescents, Bruce Leon Arneklev

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study investigated the relationship between defensiveness scores and self-report scores as they interrelate in the assessment of self-concept and its change. Data were analyzed to determine if self-report scores adjusted by regression for defensiveness would be more congruent with a criterion measure than unadjusted scores.

A secondary problem was to evaluate the extent to which the self criticism scale on the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) and the self-report vs. objective rating discrepancy method would identify the same individuals as defensive.

Samples were drawn from a population of adolescent Navajo boarding school students. A treatment sample participated in an …

Differences And Similarities In Role Perception Among Practicing School Counselors, School Psychologists, And School Social Workers, Rodney G. Cox

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Today there is much discussion about the functions of various school personnel specialists. Because of the rapid growth of these specialists—the counselor, the psychologists, and the social worker—many questions are being asked, such as: Should guidance workers be generalists or specialists? What certification requirements should be met? Should the three disciplines—counselors, psychologists, and social workers—work as a team or individually? Finally, should counselors, psychologists, and social workers teach as part of their function in the school?

An analysis of the extent of overlap between the functions of the three disciplines requires the consideration of professional preparation, ascribed roles, and primary …

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart Apr 1970

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart

Faculty Honor Lectures

Before discussing parasitic bees, I will present a rough outline of the biology of "ordinary" or non-parasitic bees. The superfamily Apoidea (bees) includes perhaps 25,000 or 30,000 species divided into nine families by recent authorities (Stephen, Bohart, Torchio, 1969) . A common biological thread holding this vast assemblage together is the provision by adults of pollen and nectar for their young. Only in the honey bees (the genus Apis which includes four species) are the larvae fed primarily on a different substance (a secretion of the pharyngeal glands) , and even this is derived from pollen and honey eaten by …

The Function Of Social Behavior In Water Resource Development , Wade H. Andrews, Dennis C. Geertsen Jan 1970

The Function Of Social Behavior In Water Resource Development , Wade H. Andrews, Dennis C. Geertsen

Reports

Preface: This report is an analysis of a social survey of the middle and lower Bear River Basin of southeastern Idaho and northern Utah concerning the problem of water resource development in a semiarid region of the Western United States. The survey part of the study, carried out in the summer of 1966, dealt with both general social factors and a specific proposal made by the Bureau of Reclamation for developing water resources of the Bear River. In many respects this proposal and the resulting behavior is typical of other western river basin projects, in some other ways, however, it …

Are Pschological Principles Useful?(A Guid To The Study Of Human Learning), David R. Stone Nov 1969

Are Pschological Principles Useful?(A Guid To The Study Of Human Learning), David R. Stone

Faculty Honor Lectures

To some extent, each person is his own doctor, his own economist, his own historian, his own counselor, his own psychologist, and his own teacher.

It is said that a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Can the same be said of a man's other roles? At least for learning (which professionally intersects education and psychology) any person may have the goal of helping himself to appreciate and evaluate the role of the learning professional.

A knowledge explosion has taken place in the area of learning, as in the many fields of science in …

Ideal Family Size And Acceptable Contraceptive Devices: A Study Of L.D.S. Student Attitudes At Utah State University, Robert Ray Weber May 1969

Ideal Family Size And Acceptable Contraceptive Devices: A Study Of L.D.S. Student Attitudes At Utah State University, Robert Ray Weber

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This study was undertaken because of the seemingly large families of the Mormons in Logan, Utah. Until this year I had never been in an area where Mormons made up a significant proportion of the population and had not realized the apparent difference in family size when compared to non-Mormons.

As a member of the Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program, I also had occasion to take two classes in Marriage and Family in the Family Life College at the University, and this also stirred my interest in the subject.

In the process of reviewing the literature on family size (fertility) and …

Affect And Meaningfulness As Variables In Mediate Association, James A. Aagard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine whether affect influences mediate association. A second purpose of this experiment was to test whether there could be found an interaction between affect and meaningfulness in the verbal mediation scores.

The subjects were all of the students registered for an Educational Psychology class at Utah State University, Spring Quarter, 1969. These students were randomly assigned to one of two groups, designated Phase I or Phase II. Phase I was designed to study the influence of affect upon mediation and the subjects in this group learned two lists of seven paired associates. Phase …

Contact Comfort Initiated By The Nursery School Child, Lana Kay Spencer May 1969

Contact Comfort Initiated By The Nursery School Child, Lana Kay Spencer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study focused upon three aspects of child-initiated contact comfort situations; how ofter the contact was sought, with whom or why did the child seek comfort, and what incident seemed to stimulate the child's action. Data was collected from two Utah State University Nursery School Laboratories

It was found that children respond as children in that similarity is greater than differences in utilization of contact comfort.

Contact comfort is an important part of a child's functioning in social situations. The number of episodes to indicate this was substantial.

The objects and persons to whom he turns for contact comfort vary …

Social Class Differences In Cognitive Development Of Children, Jalaine P. Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The social class differences in experiences which lead to cognitive development of children were investigated. A sample of 20 middle-class mothers with children enrolled in the Child Development Laboratory school and 18 lower-class mothers with children enrolled in the Head Start program in the Ogden City School District was chosen by placing the children's names in an age-ranked order. Two mothers who met the qualifications of being lower- class, but not having children enrolled in Head Start, were also included in this study. An interview outline was devised to attempt to standardize the interviews. It was concerned with five areas: …

A Study Of Adequacy And Cost Of Secondary School Guidance Programs In Utah, Richard Roland Wootton May 1969

A Study Of Adequacy And Cost Of Secondary School Guidance Programs In Utah, Richard Roland Wootton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study attempted to determine the current expenditures for secondary school guidance programs in Utah. In addition, the study attempted to evaluate the adequacy of selected guidance programs and to determine if a relationship existed between guidance expenditures and adequacy of guidance programs.

Fiscal data were collected, tabulated, and analyzed using financial reports from the Utah Office of Education. Further, response forms were administered to students, school administrators, counselors, and teachers in an attempt to elicit responses from these persons relative to their perceptions of guidance program adequacy in their respective schools.

Results indicated that Utah districts, as a group, …

Attitudes Toward Creativity Of Day Care Teachers And College Nursery School Teachers, Bonnie Kay Magleby Bishop May 1969

Attitudes Toward Creativity Of Day Care Teachers And College Nursery School Teachers, Bonnie Kay Magleby Bishop

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Previous studies have indicated the importance of teacher attitudes on the development of creativity in children. There were several purposes for this investigation. The major purpose was to develop an instrument to measure teacher attitudes toward creativity in children. The second step was the utilization of the instrument to determine if teachers trained in child development are more positive in their attitudes toward creativity than teachers with little or no background in child development. The third purpose of this investigation was to determine the relations hip between the teachers' attitudes toward creativity and religion, age, and social class.

A Review And Construction Of Career Development Programs In The Elementary School, Chase Driggs May 1969

A Review And Construction Of Career Development Programs In The Elementary School, Chase Driggs

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Overview

Every child has a right to acquire his own realistic selfevaluation of the career he intends to pursue, and the process of exposure to occupational information should be permitted and encouraged to start at an early age. From this point of view we need to foster concepts and techniques designed to facilitate the vocational maturation of the child. Interaction with counselors, teachers, parents, and community will increase the student's ability to understand the opportunities of the world of work as it relates to his aptitudes and interests and values and to enable him to be more aware of the …
