Strawflower is a cut-and-come again, full-sun annual that performs well with reduced irrigation. Often called the “everlasting flower” and “paper flower,” the dry, daisy-like blooms range from earthy salmon and terracotta to white and dusky blush tones. Strawflower adds texture to floral design, and the diverse color palette is attractive to florists. This cut flower is also exceptional for drying, as it is nearly dried in the field when ready for harvest. The non-fussy growth, low resource use, branching habit, and easy harvest make strawflower an excellent field crop in the U.S. Intermountain West, though expected yields may be lower …
Rule-Based Snow Detection Limits And Rwis Integration On Udot Traffic Cameras, Michael J. Davies
Rule-Based Snow Detection Limits And Rwis Integration On Udot Traffic Cameras, Michael J. Davies
Statewide Student Research Symposium
Over 58,000 residents of Utah's Uinta Basin depend on three highway corridors that each cross high-elevation mountain passes, yet the nearest Doppler radar is approximately 200 km away. BasinWX Roads (basinwx.com/roads) applies a rule-based computer vision pipeline to 46 existing Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) traffic cameras, integrated with 9 Roadway Weather Information System (RWIS) stations, to provide automated road condition assessments without deploying new hardware. We characterize fundamental limitations of pixel-brightness approaches to snow detection using a labeled dataset of 138 images from four NYSDOT cameras scored by six independent coders. Full-image white pixel analysis achieved only …

Basinwx: Real-Time Weather And Road Conditions For Utah's Uinta Basin, Michael J. Davies
Statewide Student Research Symposium
Utah's Uinta Basin is home to over 58,000 residents, yet every route in and out crosses one of three mountain passes, and the nearest Doppler radar is approximately 200 km away. These factors make winter travel hazardous and weather information scarce. BasinWX (basinwx.com) is a public platform developed at the Bingham Research Center that provides real-time weather and air quality data tailored to the Uinta Basin. Its newest feature, BasinWX Roads (basinwx.com/roads), applies a computer vision pipeline to 46 existing Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) traffic cameras and integrates data from 9 Roadway Weather Information System (RWIS) stations …

Currently more than 8 million people in the US work in the construction and skilled trades industries, which have historically been referred to as “blue-collar” jobs.1 The numbers will likely increase as there is a growing demand for skilled labor across the US because of the retirements of experienced tradespeople and the fact that fewer young people are pursuing these fields. Estimates show that by 2030, more than 40.0% of the current skilled trades and construction workforce will retire, leaving these industries with a critical worker shortage.2 Projections suggest that in the US by 2030, the skilled trades …

All Current Publications
Pillbugs and sowbugs are collectively known as isopods that typically feed on soil organic matter, but under certain conditions, they can be a pest of many young plants and berries. This fact sheet reviews identification, life cycle, damage, and organic management strategies for pillbugs and sowbugs.

Don't fret if, as a parent, you don't feel qualified to teach your children about money. Talking about money and choices made with money (for better or worse) is a great place to start. This publication covers what and how to teach children about money management skills, and gives every-day parents ideas to start the conversation.

Colorado River Basin Water Crisis
- Water allocations in the Colorado River Basin were set during wetter periods and now exceed current river flows, creating a gap between water supply (12.5 maf yr-1) and demand (15 maf yr-1).
- River flow has declined 19% since 2000.

Every Tool Tells You What the Lake Level WAS.
None Tell You What It WILL BE.
- Current monitoring is retrospective — USGS gauges and DWR reports show only historical data
- Decision lag: By the time you see the problem, it’s too late to adjust
- 2024–2025 season: GSL dropped to record lows before upstream conservation kicked in
- Agricultural users, municipalities, and GSL all compete for limited supply with imperfect information
Leasing Water For Great Salt Lake: Water Savings And Producer Impacts, Conner Harwood
Leasing Water For Great Salt Lake: Water Savings And Producer Impacts, Conner Harwood

Great Salt Lake Water Leasing
- Utah is working to increase inflows to GSL through voluntary water leasing from agriculture
- But key information is missing:
- How much water can leases save at the field level?
- At what price should farmers be compensated?
- This project:
- Estimates field-level consumptive water use
- Estimates the value of water in agricultural production
- Evaluates water savings and producer impacts across leasing strategies

Background and Motivation
- Agricultural water management requires information about crop water use and water consumption
- Remote sensing methods are used to model and estimate environmental processes – but they require weather data

The climate question
- Overtopping = 1/3rd of all dam failures (ASDSO)
- Drought concerns and supply uncertainty motivate keeping reservoirs full
- Overtopping likelier if extreme storm when reservoir full
- Over much of the country the probability of the annual daily maximum rainfall > 100-year event and the preceding 30-day rainfall >10-year event are going up (Hwang & Lall 2024)

Introduction
• Increasing pressure on already water scarce resources due to
- Climate Change and or variability
• Increasing demand and competition for water. E.g. due to -urban expansion
• Environmental concerns (Especially concerning the Great Salt Lake (GSL)-
• the shrinking of water levels in the GSL,
• increasing pollution levels in the GSL and
• the impact of these issues on industry,
• dust from the drying lakebed,
• increasing threat to both aquatic life and land animals

Water Needs And Recovery Pathways For The Great Salt Lake, David Tarboton, Sarah Null, Bethany Neilson
Water Needs And Recovery Pathways For The Great Salt Lake, David Tarboton, Sarah Null, Bethany Neilson
Spring Runoff Conference
Main Points
- Levels of GSL inherently fluctuate because of variability in precipitation and temperature that drive inflow and evaporation
- Reductions in inflows due to water use are superimposed on this variability
- Consistent delivery of conserved water offers the opportunity to shift the range of lake levels upwards reducing the occurrence of serious adverse effects and increasing the potential for healthy lake levels
- Adding 250 thousand-acre ft/year reduces the occurrence of serious adverse effects from 61% to 28% over the long term
- Adding 800 thousand-acre ft/year shifts the mean of variable lake levels to the lower end of the healthy lake …
