Bulletin No. 313 - Canal Lining Experiments In The Delta Area, Utah, Orson W. Israelsen, Ronald C. Reeve Jun 1944

Bulletin No. 313 - Canal Lining Experiments In The Delta Area, Utah, Orson W. Israelsen, Ronald C. Reeve

UAES Bulletins

THIS bulletin reports data collected in a three-year experimental study of seepage losses from typical canal sections in the Delta Area, Millard County, Utah. It includes analyses of the justifiable cost of lining irrigation canals based on the value of the water saved and on assumed or estimated annual maintenance costs of the lining. vVith present water values and interest rates and canal lining maintenance costs not greater than 9 percent annually, Delta Area irrigation companies can justify initial lining costs of 9 cents per square foot on some of their canals . Seepage losses were measured in eight experimental …

Occupational Survey Of Ogden City With Implications For Vocational Education, Leroy A. Blaser May 1944

Occupational Survey Of Ogden City With Implications For Vocational Education, Leroy A. Blaser

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the most striking characteristics of society today is the marvelous development that is everywhere manifest along industrial lines. In nearly every department of industry the simple processes which formerly prevailed have become differentiated into a great variety of activities, and all have been organized into a definite system. Methods of exploiting the earth in search for raw materials, processes of manufacture, and modes of distribution and exchange have become wonderfully complex. The influence of this change is far-reaching. It permeates every phase of life. It operates in the church as well as in the state, in the home …

Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown Apr 1944

Nutritional Status Of Some Utah Population Groups, Almeda Perry Brown

Faculty Honor Lectures

The science of nutrition is the science of life. Though man is still ignorant of the true nature of that elusive force we call life, he has learned by means of the discovered laws of nutrition how to preserve and prolong life as well as how to add to the satisfactions of living.

The emergence of the sicence of nutrition from the maze of superstition which for centuries clouded man's thinking is a fascinating story. A story, however, that arouses a feeling of regret that for so long a time man was willing to attribute to supernatural forces all phenomena …

Laboratory Tests On Gravelly Material For Use In The Pervious Zones Of Newton Dam, Newton Project, Utah, W.G. Holtz Nov 1943

Laboratory Tests On Gravelly Material For Use In The Pervious Zones Of Newton Dam, Newton Project, Utah, W.G. Holtz

Elusive Documents

A compaction test was performed on the soil (-1/2") material, and mechanical analysis, specific gravity, and percolation-consolidation test was made in a large (19&1/2" diameter) percolator, cylinder and the material was well compacted into the cylinder. A consolidating load equivalent to a 20-foot fill was applied. Because it was believed that some of the fine sand might be transported through the gravel and rock by the percolating water, a 14-mesh screen and a 2-inch later of clear fine gravel (3/16" - 3/8") was placed over the gravelly material being tested. After the percolation-consolidation test was completed, the screen and fine …

Bulletin No. 310 - The Influence Of Cropping On The Nitrogen, Phosphorus And Organic Matter Of The Soil Under Irrigation Farming, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst Sep 1943

Bulletin No. 310 - The Influence Of Cropping On The Nitrogen, Phosphorus And Organic Matter Of The Soil Under Irrigation Farming, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst

UAES Bulletins

Most soils contain sufficient nutrients for normal plant growth, with the exception of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These elements are used by plants in the largest quantities and the amounts of these in the soil govern its productivity. Soil organic matter is of prime importance for it is the matrix which holds the nitrogen and modifies the structure, temperature, and water-holding capacity of the soil. The organic matter is the very life of the soil, for it is in and on it that bacteria work and by so doing determine the kind and speed of reactions which occur. It is …

Bulletin No. 309 - An Economic Analysis Of The Milking Enterprise On Farms In The Ogden Area, Utah, 1937-39, George T. Blanch, Dee A. Broadbent Jul 1943

Bulletin No. 309 - An Economic Analysis Of The Milking Enterprise On Farms In The Ogden Area, Utah, 1937-39, George T. Blanch, Dee A. Broadbent

UAES Bulletins

The area included in this study is part of the better irrigated section of Utah. Although the soils are variable, that part used for arable agriculture is generally fair to good. The poorer soils are used largely for pastures which makes necessary a forage-consuming livestock enterprise in the farm organization. Dairy cattle is the type of livestock most common. Topography, climate, irrigation water supply, transportation, and markets all permit or favor a relatively intensive and successful cash-crop and dairy type of farming. The average farm is relatively small in area of cultivated land which also makes necessary intensive usage, high …

Bulletin No. 308 - A Farm Management Study Of Farms With Dairy Enterprises In The Ogden Area, Utah, 1937-39, George T. Blanch, Dee A. Broadbent Jun 1943

Bulletin No. 308 - A Farm Management Study Of Farms With Dairy Enterprises In The Ogden Area, Utah, 1937-39, George T. Blanch, Dee A. Broadbent

UAES Bulletins

Farmers in the irrigated sections of Utah are confronted by several difficult problems in the management of their farms. The farms are far distant from the consumption centers of the country which results in high freight rates and a need to produce concentrated products for market, and also in violent fluctuations in farm prices. The farms usually consist of relatively few crop acres which makes intensive usage necessary for an adequate sized business. Most farms also include a considerable acreage of land unsuited to tillage. The utilization of this land makes necessary the inclusion in the farm business of a …

How To Reseed Utah Range Lands, A. Perry Plummer, Richard M. Hurd, C. Kenneth Pearse Jun 1943

How To Reseed Utah Range Lands, A. Perry Plummer, Richard M. Hurd, C. Kenneth Pearse

Aspen Bibliography

Additional low cost forage is urgently needed by Utah's range livestock industry. Seeding of depleted tracts in accordance with recently developed methods and principles will help supply this forage and is entirely feasible. Where the value of the increased forage will repay the cost of planting, careful reseeding of selected sites is fully justified.

The important part that reseeding can play in restoring ranges to their former capacity has been demonstrated. Although satisfactory results can be obtained on many sites during average or better years, much more study is needed to insure consistent success in abnormal years and to extend …

Participation In Social Institutions By Relief Families In A Selected Rooming House Area In Salt Lake City July 1933 To July 1934, D. Ivo Eames

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A series of happenlngs in Salt Lake City during the early years of the reoent depression strongly Indlcate that certain relief clients were, at that time, more or leas chronic trouble makers. They frequently threatened and sometimes inflicted bodily harm on social case workers; they inflicted riots, held protest meetings and wrote protest letters to state and national officials. A check-up on the addresses of these clients showed that the majority lived in the same or near-by areas.

The Dry Lake Section Of The Brazer Foundation, James S. Yolton May 1943

The Dry Lake Section Of The Brazer Foundation, James S. Yolton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Dry Lake section of the Brazer formation, totalling 3100 feet in thickness, is an excellent exposure containing an abundance of fossils many of which are well preserved. The fauna indicates that the formation is to be correlated with the Upper Iowan and Chester series of the type Mississippian system in the Mississippi Valley section. Substantial fossil evidence indicates the following correlation for the Brazer formation members. The C unit represents the western equivalent of the Middle Meramec group, i.e., the Salem and St. Louis limestones. The D member is decidedly Ste. Genevieve in general faunal aspects but, because of …

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Utah And Idaho Honeys, Raymond C. Rhees May 1943

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Utah And Idaho Honeys, Raymond C. Rhees

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Even though honey is one of the oldest known sweets, there is a general lack of knowledge concerning its chemical and physical properties. This is particularly true of those honeys produced in the intermountain region. Beekeepers of this region have long felt that their product was sweeter than those honeys produced in other sections of the country. This, of course, implies that honey produced in the intermountain area is higher in sugar concentration and lower in percent moisture. The present study was made in order to supply some data concerning honeys of this area.

The Foundation Of Permanent Agriculture In Arid Regions, Orson W. Israelsen Mar 1943

The Foundation Of Permanent Agriculture In Arid Regions, Orson W. Israelsen

Faculty Honor Lectures

The engineer, like other scientists, is continuously seeking knowledge and understanding of the universe in which he lives. He is vitally interested in the control and the use of the forces and materials of nature for the benefit of man. He strives for the maximum economy in the use of these forces and materials which is consistent with safety and durability. He abhors waste and he works vigorously to increase efficiency. To the engineer, mastery of the physical obstacles of life is not only a challenge-it is also an opportunity. He knows that full understanding of the physical sciences is …

Bulletin No. 303 - Utilization Of Irrigable Land In The Reservation Area Of Uinta Basin, Utah, George T. Blanch, Clyde E. Stewart

UAES Bulletins

Several years ago the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station began a project entitled "Study of agricultural resources in Utah and their utilization." This project contemplates conducting detailed soils, irrigation water, range and economic studies in all areas of Utah. To date these studies have been made for a portion of the state including the Uinta Basin. However, in order that the information so obtained can be more effectively used for public and private programs of operation, there is a need to combine and correlate the basic data.

The primary objective of the study reported herewith is to bring together and analyze …
