The Settlement Of Cache Valley, Joel E. Ricks
The Settlement Of Cache Valley, Joel E. Ricks
Joel Ricks Collection
The settlement of Cache Valley played a significant part in the tremendous efforts of Brigham Young to occupy and develop an extensive commonwealth in the Far West. As he led his tired but hopeful pioneers into the valley of the Great Salt Lake in 1847, it did not seem likely that one of America's greatest colonial enterprises was in the making.

A History Of The Rambouillet Breed Of Sheep In Utah, Edwin M. G. Seely
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The domestic sheep in the flocks in the state of Utah all trace their origins back to Europe. Between the sixteenth century and the present, sheep have made at least six different journeys from the old world to America and have fused their blood in the formation of the sheep industry of Utah. Each of these movements has a dramatic and interesting story to be told, but the trek of the Rambouillet is perhaps the most fascinating of all. The journey began in Spain, when by sea and by land the hardy fine-wool Spanish Merino made its way into France …

For one hundred years Cache Valley has been a growing segment of the American economy. Alternating periods of national financial stress and prosperity have been reflected in this Valley. In addition, Cache Valley has been confronted with certain distinct economic and financial problems and has produced her own solutions to these problems. Although her economy is based in large part on agriculture, the existence of the state agricultural college and a number of industries in her midst has induced economic growth and influenced economic development. Cache Valley provides fertile ground for study of a representative segment of the American economy. …

Bulletin No. 384 - Virus And Viruslike Diseases Of Stone Fruits In Utah: A Handbook For Their Identification And Control, B. L. Richards, L. C. Cochran
UAES Bulletins
Intensive research over the last 20 years has shown that many of the previously unexplained and seemingly mysterious disorders of stone fruit trees in Utah are infectious diseases caused by viruses. Others were shown to be the result of noninfectious genetic abnormalities or of adverse chemical and physical factors in the environment of the plant. The purpose of this handbook is to help orchardists and others recognize these diseases and disorders and understand better their etiology or cause. The handbook will also bring together basic information which will aid in their control.

It is the standard practice in colleges and universities to administer to all entering students a battery of tests which are designed to measure the aptitude and ability of students. Each institution uses in its test battery those tests which are best suited to its particular needs, but in the main they consist of measures of general mental ability, the ability to understand and use the English language and the ability to understand and to use mathematical symbols. These tests are available to the institution through companies which construct and standardize tests of all kinds. In addition to these tests, …
Evaluation Of Sprinkler Systems In Northern Utah, Murray J. Gavel
Evaluation Of Sprinkler Systems In Northern Utah, Murray J. Gavel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Sprinkling as a method of irrigation has been expanding rapidly in the United States, with acreages irrigated by this method increasing every year. One of the major reasons for the expansion is the great improvements that have been made in sprinkler irrigation equipment. Light weight aluminum pipe, with quick couplers, improved pump and motor efficiencies have all made sprinkler irrigation more desirable. High efficiency of water application, labor requirements, and favorable plant response have also favored the expansion.
Another reason for the increase in sprinkler irrigation is that new lands being brought under irrigation are often not adaptable to surface …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad. has had limited use as a forage crop during the past fifteen years in parts of the western United States, Canada, and Argentina. Erickson and Moxon (1947) reported kochia* to be a good emergency feed for sheep and cattle during dry years in South Dakota. Salguero (1946) said that this species could be utilized in Argentina as silage or pasturage if harvested before flowering. Bell, et al. (1952) in Saskatoon, Canada studied this species in a comparison with other introduced plants and reported that it seemed to have desirable nutrient characteristics for livestock roughage. Plummer …

For many years, substitutes for butterfat have been the subject of much controversy. Their acceptance as being nutritionally equal to butterfat has often been question. The importance of this problem lies primarily in its economic and nutritional significance.
A recent study of public attitudes toward dairy products conducted by Alfred Politz Research, Inc. for the American Dairy Association, shows that 48.4 per cent of the population believed that butter is a more nutritions food than oleomargarine. Only 6 per cent thought that oleomargarine is more nutritious while 27.2 per cent believed they are about the same. The remainder, 18.4 per …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
American elk, by virtue of their distribution, were the most cosmopolitan members of the cervid family at the time of white settlement of North America. At this early date elk were present in every major region of what is now continental United States, as well as in northern Mexico. they likewise were abundant in upper and lower Canada, though records do Lot corroborate their presence too far north on the Atlantic coast. Although generally existent throughout the western states, elk were sparsely distributed in Nevada, southern Utah, and most of Arizona and New Mexico. Paucity of elk was also noted …

A Determination Of Variability Of Teaching Assignments In The Secondary Schools Of Utah Together With Implications For Teacher Education Curricula, June Butler Willhite
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is usually recognized that, in the broad sense, our public schools are maintained for the instruction of children and youth. Moreover, there appear to be three important factors which bear directly upon the nature of this instruction: (1) the individuals who enter the teaching profession, the kinds of people they are, their physical, emotional and mental characteristics or capacities; (2) the kind of education these potential educators receive in preparation for their professional work; and, (3) the actual teaching assignment the individual receives in the particular school where he is employed. Commonly, these three matters are referred to as …

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the Mormon Church, is one of the few religious organizations in the world today that constructs temples, since its founding in the year 1830 these sacred edifices have exerted a definite influence upon its members, and have played an important part in the religious activities of the church and fulfilled a definite role in its gospel teachings. A number of these temples have been constructed under varying circumstances in different parts of the country where the need has arisen. These buildings were more than houses of worship, for …
A Study Of Recommended School Plant Planning Procedures Together With An Evaluation Of The Extent To Which They Are Being Utilized In Selected Utah School Districts, Spencer Wyatt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the great problems facing the public schools of America today is that of providing adequate school facilities. The immediate need for new buildings is overwhelming. Contributing factors to the need for expanded school plant facilities can be classified, both as a result of a backlog of school building needs over a period of several decades, and because of greatly increased enrollments. A publication of the United States Office of Education summarized a discussion of these factors as follows:
The public schools entered the 1950 decade with a backlog of need for more than 250,000 classrooms and faced anticipated …
Use Of Corn Syrup Solids Of Different Dextrose Equivalents In The Manufacture Of Frozen Desserts, Wiggo F. Axelgard
Use Of Corn Syrup Solids Of Different Dextrose Equivalents In The Manufacture Of Frozen Desserts, Wiggo F. Axelgard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ice cream industry continually faces the problem of improving its frozen desserts. At the present time corn syrup solids are being used to supplement milk serum solids to improve the body and texture of these products.
One of the problems is to increase the total solids content of frozen desserts without increasing sweetness or developing sandiness in the finished product. There is a limit to the amount of milk serum solids that can be used because of the danger of sandiness and the cost. The use of corn syrup solids helps to overcome these limiting factors.
The corn syrup …
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Injected Radioactive Phosphorus And Gonadectomy On The Anterior Pituitary Gland Of The Albino Rat With Observations On The Thyroids, Adrenals, And Male Sex Accessories, Richard F. Preator
Biology
It is well known that the anterior pituitary gland exerts through its gonadotrophic hormones a definite stimulationg effect on the gonads and that the gonads in turn have a reciprocal endocrine effect on the anterior pituitary. This importance of the anterior pituitary to gonadal function was first demonstrated by P. E. Smith (34). Other prominent early workers who further elucidated the reciprocal endocrine relationship were Moore and Price (25). Following a great deal of study and experimental work by many groups, A. E. Severinghaus (32) correlated all available information and postulated the secretory cycle of the pituitary in relation to …
