Body weight is fast becoming the major health problem in the United States. Recent estimates of the number of weight conscious people in the United States are now up to 75 million. One year ago the estimate of overweight individuals was 60 million Americans who were overweight or should be concerned about watching their weight. There are also two million known diabetics who must control their disease and body weight by a restricted caloric intake.

A Comparison Of Underachievers And Normal Achievers At The Upper-Elementary And Seventh-Grade Level, M. Nephi Manning May 1962

A Comparison Of Underachievers And Normal Achievers At The Upper-Elementary And Seventh-Grade Level, M. Nephi Manning

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

That each is born with differing capacities and potentials is self-evident. Both students and teachers should accept as their right and duty the task of bringing to full fruition these latent potentialities.

It is a cause of concern in the nation, among parents and teachers, and in later years among students themselves, that many of our youth fail to achieve that of which they are capable. This is a loss to society and a disappointment to the individual.

The purpose of this study is to add to the growing fund of knowledge concerning factors related to this important area of …

A Study Of The Use Of The Hydrogen Peroxide-Catalase Treatment Of Milk In The Manufacture Of A Reduced Fat, Cheddar-Like Cheese, Lamar John Johnson May 1962

A Study Of The Use Of The Hydrogen Peroxide-Catalase Treatment Of Milk In The Manufacture Of A Reduced Fat, Cheddar-Like Cheese, Lamar John Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nutritionists, the medical profession, and the public in general have become increasingly interested in low fat food products. Cheddar cheese, as it is now made, has a high caloric value and therefore may be discriminated against in some diets. The production of a reduced fat cheddar-like cheese would be of importance to the cheese industry by providing a reduced fat, high protein product.

The chemical nature of the casein furnishes the foundation for the body and texture in cheese. The body and texture of typical cheddar cheese is influenced principally by its fat and moisture content.

The use of hydrogen …

A Study Of The Effects Of Acidity On Shelf Life And Type Of Spoilage In Market Milk, Jagannath M. Kudale May 1962

A Study Of The Effects Of Acidity On Shelf Life And Type Of Spoilage In Market Milk, Jagannath M. Kudale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The addition of the Streptococcus lactis culture in the pasteurized milk was studied, in an attempt to find the effects of the culture in prolonging shelf life of the milk. Various concentrations of the culture were tried to find the optimum concentration that would give favorable effect on keeping quality of the milk. It was found that the addition of Streptococcus lactis culture at the rate of 0.0001 percent has shown promising effects in prolonging shelf life of the milk at the storage temperature of 40 F.

In addition to the above study, effects of added acid in the pasteurized …

Income Adjustments From Fee And Permit Changes On Utah Cattle Ranches Using Public Ranges Yearlong, C. Kerry Gee May 1962

Income Adjustments From Fee And Permit Changes On Utah Cattle Ranches Using Public Ranges Yearlong, C. Kerry Gee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Within the boundaries of Utah are approximately 52.7 million acres of land. About 41 million acres are rangeland, of which 73 percent is federally owned and 5 percent state owned (6).1 The portion owned by the Federal government is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Forest Service. Most of this land is either arid or mountainous and has been used mainly for grazing in the past. IT has other uses, however, such as mining, forestry, recreation, and watersheds. Due to recent increases in population, personal income, shorter work weeks, and improved transportation facilities, these alternatives …

Ecology Of Spring Fed Salt-Marshes, Eric George Bolen May 1962

Ecology Of Spring Fed Salt-Marshes, Eric George Bolen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Any marsh is a distinctive land-form of varied interest. To the agriculturist it is wasteland to be reclaimed; to the naturalist, a habitat of aesthetic value. To the ecologist, however, a marsh represents a complexity of vegetation under the influences of many and often inseparable factors. It becomes a place of challenging study.

Observations On The Behavior Of Bees In A Controlled-Environment Room, William P. Nye Jan 1962

Observations On The Behavior Of Bees In A Controlled-Environment Room, William P. Nye

All PIRU Publications

A detailed description is given of a controlled-environment flight room for the study of bee behaviour both in and outside the colony. Experiments demonstrated the ability of a colony to collect pollen, sugar syrup and water in the room, and to rear brood normally, increasing its strength throughout It months in spring. The behaviour of bees collecting powdered pollen from a tray 30 ft. [10 m.l from the hive was influenced by the amount and distribution of light in the room.

Nectar Sugar Concentration As A Measure Of Pollination Of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), William P. Nye, M. W. Pedersen Jan 1962

Nectar Sugar Concentration As A Measure Of Pollination Of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), William P. Nye, M. W. Pedersen

All PIRU Publications

The "visitation rate of honeybees on alfalfa may possibly be measured by determining the sugar concentration of nectar in the honey stomachs of foraging bees. This concentration is shown to be largely controlled by the relative humidity and the time available for nectar evaporation in the alfalfa blossom, which in turn depends on the rate of visitation by honeybees. An adjustment for relative humidity may be necessary in order to compare readings widely separated in time or location. Where conditions are relatively constant from day to day, it may be sufficient to measure the nectar sugar concentration and relative humidity …

From the Mormon point of view, ignorance is a sin. Mormons believe that their very salvation is dependent upon the development of their mental and spiritual powers, as evidenced from the two following, typical statements from Mormon sacred literature: "The glory of God is intelligence;" "It is impossible for man to be saved in ignorance."

The Influence Of Water-Reducing Admixtures On The Curing Of Concrete, Wallace Don Budge May 1961

The Influence Of Water-Reducing Admixtures On The Curing Of Concrete, Wallace Don Budge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The use of water-reducing admixtures in concrete has grown continuously since their introduction over 25 years ago, with a present estimated usage in the production of 25 million cubic yards of concrete annually in the United States alone. Opposition to anything added to concrete, other than cement, aggregates, and water, is gradually disappearing, and considerable recognition is being given to the value of using other ingredients.

The research contained in this study may be divided into two portions: tests to determine the rate of volume change of cement paste and compressive strength tests to indicate the effect of moist curing …

Seriousness Of Dodder In Production Of Alfalfa Seed In Millard County, Lloyd Claude Warner May 1961

Seriousness Of Dodder In Production Of Alfalfa Seed In Millard County, Lloyd Claude Warner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dodder is the common name for the group of plants in the genus Cuscuta. It is a serious weed in nearly all the legume seed producing areas of southern and western United States (5). Dodder is of major economic importance in the production of alfalfa, lespedeza, clover, and of less importance in such crops as flax, onions, sugar beets, and some ornamentals.

In Millard County, which is the most important alfalfa seed producing area in Utah, growers consider dodder one of their worst threats to alfalfa seed production.

A major factor that contributes to the dodder problem in Millard …

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey May 1961

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem of what kinds of music provide the most meaning for the young child has long been a concern of the author. It arises not only out of close experience with young children, but also out of a concern for the responsibility of providing them with meaningful aesthetic experiences. From this background of experience the problem is not purely an academic one. Its first and ultimate concern is an experiential one. Because it arises out of this particular background, the analysis of the problem and its study is less concerned with academic and scientific validity than might otherwise have …

Studies On Venison Quality: Flavor Studies; Effect Of Methods Of Thawing, Kind And Level Of Fat, And Degree Of Doneness, Grace J. Smith May 1961

Studies On Venison Quality: Flavor Studies; Effect Of Methods Of Thawing, Kind And Level Of Fat, And Degree Of Doneness, Grace J. Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Venison represents an important resource in this area. The average number of deer killed in Utah during hunting season of the ten-year period, 1940 to 1950, was over 50,000 animals annually according to the Utah State Fish and Game Department. For the period from 1950 to 1960 this figure has increased to over 100,000 animals. In terms of dressed weight, 100,000 animals would yield an estimated 8,000,000 pounds of meat. Neighboring states also produce large numbers of deer. This pictures venison not only as an important resource but as one rapidly increasing in importance.

Before the recent advent of locker …

Improving Elementary School Singing, P. Annette Hansen May 1961

Improving Elementary School Singing, P. Annette Hansen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The problem of helping children to make continual progress in their singing ability has been of particular interest to me because of the experiences I have had in teaching music to third, fifth, and sixth graders. In most cases the children had had few teachers who were trained or experienced in teaching music. In one district there wasn't even a music supervisor to whom teachers could go for help if they felt they needed it.

The problems on which I have done research to write this paper are the ones which have been the most common in my experience. I …

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil Jan 1961

A Rational Approach To The Estimation Of Evaporation And Evapotranspiration From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, B. B. Patil

Reports

Many attempts have been made to derive mathematical expressions relating evaporation and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, to climatological data. IN the United States, the Blaney-Criddle formula is probably the best known for estimating consumptive use (2 and 3). Blaney (1) has also suggested that this formula is suitable for estimating evaporation as measured with a Weather Bureau pan. Other well known formulas are the Penman formulas (10), the Thornthwaite formula (15) and the Hargreaves formulas (8). Halkias, Beihmeyer and Hendrickson (6) suggest that water requirements of crops can be determined from atmometer data. Lowry and Johnson (() in an early …

Self Evaluation Of A Selected Group Of Teen Marriages, Margaret L. Stone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The statistical trend toward an increasing number of early marriages in the United States is causing concern for parents and community officials (21). The average age of marriage has been declining since 1890. Half of the girls are now married by the time they are twenty and half of the men by the time they are twenty-three (13). In a study made by Landis (20) of marriages in California high schools, 90 percent of the senior high schools reported one or more student marriages. Similar statistics have been reported in New Mexico (16) and Oregon (18). Research has pointed an …

Effects Of A Specific Developmental Reading Program Upon The Progress In Reading Of Seventh Grade Students Of Morgan High School, Raymond P. Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Our civilization depends in great measure on the reading process and there is a need for attaining greater skill in reading. Being able to read well has become one criteria for measuring the extent of a person's education. Every year seems to increase the reading demands made upon students as well as adults. Reading was one of the three R's that made up the curriculum of the early schools in our country. Reach (1955) states that in our society all children are not only privilaged, but most of them are required to spend many years in school, and the curriculum …

Predicting Mathematics 34 And 35 Grades At Utah State University, Donald N. Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Incoming freshman students are confronted early in their college career with the problem of selecting a program of study that fits their needs, capacities and interests. Counselors and advisors have found that a large number of students do not give prior deliberation to the selection of a major field of study. For the most part, students use a trial and error method in making their choices. That is, their choice is a result of success in previous class work. Although some effort is being made by educational personnel to resolve this problem, a large amount of objective research remains to …

Distance From The Apiary As A Factor In Alfalfa Pollination, M. D. Levin, George E. Bohart, William P. Nye Jan 1960

Distance From The Apiary As A Factor In Alfalfa Pollination, M. D. Levin, George E. Bohart, William P. Nye

All PIRU Publications

Experiments conducted in northern Utah indicated that the distribution of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) on an alfalfa field is modified by various influences besides distance from the colonies. Because of these other factors, generalizations concerning the effect of distance from colonies on the distribution of foraging honey bees cannot be made on the basis of experiments herein reported. A slight negative relationship between bee populations and distance from colonies in alfalfa fields was found in some of the experiments reported. In two fields where the distance was less than 600 feet, horizontal stratification of the field population …
