The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson May 1966

The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is designed to examine and evaluate the basic beliefs and actions of the John Birch Society. It is not intended to determine the proper location for the Society on the American political spectrum, but to merely represent an opinion. An objective approach is intended, but the conclusion expresses a point of view, which, I hope, is clear and consistent enough to allow those who may disagree to take issue.

There is a great deal of room for disagreement on a subject such as this. The sources used in determining the content of this presentation are listed in the …

Herbert B. Maw As Governor Of Utah, John C. Setmire

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Herbert B. Maw, like many other Utahn’s, is a self-made man, a poor boy who sold newspapers from the age of ten to fifteen, and worked nights to put himself through college. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1923 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree, and in 1926 he obtained a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University. Maw received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1927 from Northwestern University, and in the same year he was elected to the Utah Senate on the Democratic ticket. In 1934 Maw ran for the United States Senate and lost the election, however, in …

Team Teaching In Secondary School Science: Techniqeus In Large And Small Group Instruction And The Use Of Para-Professionals, Berlin C. Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In team teaching there are considerations that are basic to conducting a successful learning experience. In large and small group instruction certain techniques are used that can reduce the tension and anxiety of the team teacher. Just how these techniques are used will vary for the individual team teacher. How to secure and use para-professionals are also basic considerations in a team teaching program. According to this survey certain techniques can be effectively used in large groups (1). The school plant itself has undergone a remarkable change, Newly constructed schools can now accommodate larger and more effective classes, or the …

Preliminary Studies Of Germination Requirements Of Shadscale Atriplex Confertifolia Torr. And Ferm. Wats, Ijaz Hussain

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Shadscale (Atriplex confertilolia (Torr. and Frem.) Wats.) is an important component of the salt-desert-shrub vegetation type in the intermountain region. This species dominates a large portion of the 41 million acres occupied by this vegetation type. Shapscale reaches greatest importance at lower elevations of Utah and Nevada, where despite the low productivity due to its harsh habitat, this vigorous shrub furnishes considerable winter grazing for sheep and cattle. Gates et al. (1966) have observed that poor drainage conditions, coupled with low precipitation, results in the concentration of salts, a chief habitat factor determining the growth and distribution of this species. …

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee May 1966

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Flows observed in open channels are usually turbulent. The word "turbulent" describes a motion in which an irregular velocity fluctuation (mixing or eddying motion) is superimposed on the main stream motion. The essential characteristic of turbulent flow is that the turbulent fluctuations are random in nature.

If Reynold's rule of averaging is used, the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow may be transformed into the Reynold's equations, which hold true for turbulent mean motion. The solution of Reynold's equations will properly describe turbulent flow. Unfortunately, the number of unknowns exceeds the number of equations; therefore the use of mathematical method to …

An Evaluation Of The Promotion Policy Of The Iron County Schools, Claudia J. Forsyth May 1966

An Evaluation Of The Promotion Policy Of The Iron County Schools, Claudia J. Forsyth

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1931, the Department of Superintendents, National Education Association, in their Nineth Yearbook, put "Pupil Promotion" as first in a listing of five factors needing study . In 1966, more than three decades later, the effects of promotion or nonpromotion, still remain the subject of serious consideration among educators. The problem has been the subject of research studies and many opinion articles.

The Iron County School District, Cedar City, Utah, has advocated a policy of careful evaluation for each child considered for nonpromotion . The philosophy of the district which advocates adjusting instruction to meet individual differences should eliminate, except …

Jack London: Master Craftsman Of The Short Story, King Hendricks Apr 1966

Jack London: Master Craftsman Of The Short Story, King Hendricks

Faculty Honor Lectures

In November of 1898 Jack London, aged 22, sold his first short story, "To the Man on Trail," to Overland Monthly for the sum of $5. Three months later The Black Cat magazine paid him $40 for "A Thousand Deaths." This was the beginning of a writing career that in 17 years was to produce 149 short stories, not including his tramping experiences which he published under the title of The Road, 19 novels, and a number of essays. If all were accumulated and published, they would fill 50 volumes. Besides this, he wrote a number of newspaper articles (war …

Simultaneous Comparison Of Rf Probe Techniques For Determination Of Ionospheric Electron Density, K. D. Baker, A. M. Despain, J. C. Ulwick

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Three radio-frequency( RF) probe techniques--standingw ave impedancep robe, plasma frequency probe, and resonance rectification probe--have been simultaneously flown on rockets for ionospheric measurements. The results of the three probes are compared to establisht he relationshipsa mong them. The impedancep robe and plasma frequency probe measurements are in general agreement with each other and with other independent measurements. A model of antenna-ionosphericin teraction is used that neglects ion sheath and magnetic field effects. The resonance rectification probe shows resonance effects including peaks.and minimums that are a function of probe dc bias. The frequency of the dominant resonance peak does not correspond …

Babylon To Zion On Forty-Two Dollars: The Disaster Of The Willie Company And An Evaluation Of The Handcart System, Larry R. Moses

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1847, the Mormon Church began a migration to the Great Salt Lake Basin, their Zion in the mountains. This pilgrimage was to continue for over half a century, and out of it was to come one of the truly epic stories of the western settlement. Before leaving Nauvoo, these self-styled, Saints of the modern era pledged themselves to set up a system to transport all of their members to Utah, regardless of their financial status. The vow was renewed at the October 1849 Conference held in Salt Lake City. President Heber C. Kimball, first councilor to Brigham Young, suggested …

The Origin And Evolution Of The Governmental Immunity From Tort Liability As Related To Schools With Emphasis On Utah, Charles F. Scholes May 1965

The Origin And Evolution Of The Governmental Immunity From Tort Liability As Related To Schools With Emphasis On Utah, Charles F. Scholes

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The common-law, as it has evolved from the Eighteenth Century, is that school districts are immune from tort liability because they are a functioning part of the state. At this time, however, there are a great many changes taking place in the laws throughout the country. Some states have completely abrogated the doctrine of tort immunity while others have done so only in part. In Utah the laws have only recently been changed but are not in effect until July l, 1966.

Sex Preferences And Identifications Of Young Children, Loa Thomson May 1965

Sex Preferences And Identifications Of Young Children, Loa Thomson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The acquisition of normal sex-role behavior is one of the fundamental tasks which goes into developing a healthy personality. More needs to be understood about the processes involved in adopting proper sex-role behavior patterns. How does a little girl adopt the feminine role and learn to be a woman? How does a little boy adopt the masculine role and learn to be a man? From the studies in clinical psychology and psychiatry, it is evident that personality maladjustments and certain forms of emotional disorders appear to be related to difficulties in sex-role adjustment. This suggests a close correlation between childhood …

An Analysis Of Parental Attitudes Toward The Instrumental Music Program In The High Schools Of Bingham County, Idaho, Clark R. Gardner May 1965

An Analysis Of Parental Attitudes Toward The Instrumental Music Program In The High Schools Of Bingham County, Idaho, Clark R. Gardner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the end of World War I instrumental music has become an important and accepted part of the secondary school curriculum (17, pp. 56-59). According to a recent report published by the American Music Conference, Chicago, Illinois (19, p. 3), there were in 1963 eleven million students studying music in the schools of America.

There have been numerous studies conducted to determine the purpose and objectives of instrumental music. Many studies have also been made to ascertain what the parents' feelings are toward their schools. Yet there has been very little research or study accomplished concerning the feelings or attitudes …

Radiosensitivity And Cytogenetic Studies On An Interspecific Grass Hybrid, Paul James Bottino May 1965

Radiosensitivity And Cytogenetic Studies On An Interspecific Grass Hybrid, Paul James Bottino

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The complex response of plants to ionizing radiation has never been clearly understood. One of the main problems is the differential sensitivity of plants to radiation. A clear understanding of differential sensitivity lies far in the future. For the present a major question is: can we predict the radiosensitivity of a plant before radiation exposure? Some progress has been made in answering this question. Sparrow et al. (29) feel that they have a useful statistic which can be used to predict the approximate radiosensitivity of a plant. Average interphase chromosome volume has been tested on sixteen species of herbaceous plants …

Mechanical Transmission Of A Latent Virus From Apple To Herbaceous Plants, Ali Majid Jafri May 1965

Mechanical Transmission Of A Latent Virus From Apple To Herbaceous Plants, Ali Majid Jafri

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recent work has shown that viruses are widely disseminated in commercial apple trees growing in this country (1, 14, 16, 17)—quite often one or more latent viruses are found in these plants. Usually latent viruses produce no symptoms, except in special indicator hosts. Latent viruses may cause severe injury when infected plants are grafted to a sensitive variety or rootstock. Actual damage caused by most of the apple viruses is not known but some of these definitely cause serious losses. Experimental plots at Utah State University were ruined by stem pitting virus infection. However, other latent viruses were also present …

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles May 1965

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The idea of a scholarship program is almost as old as the oldest institution of higher learning. The universality of such a program is almost completely comprehensive throughout the world. Although the purpose of scholarship programs has varied as much as each of the institutions varies, in most of the situations the programs have been well acclaimed. The success of these programs in terms of the student has often been tested or at least scrutinized. This type of study has been attempted several times. However, both Harris (11) and Endler (7), in reviewing the literature from 1931 to 1959, report …

A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Social Adjustment Of Mentally Retarded Students, C. Thomas Musgrave May 1965

A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Social Adjustment Of Mentally Retarded Students, C. Thomas Musgrave

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Public awareness of the problem of mental retardation is relatively new. Professional services in this area are less than one hundred and fifty years old in America. In essence, the treatment of the mentally retarded since ancient times has been very harsh. The Spartans from ancient Greece left all defectives exposed to the elements to die. They were treated with aversion and subjected to many indignities.

The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen May 1965

The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the observations of counselors and teachers within our school district there seem to be these indications: (a) That many failing students are experiencing personal adjustment problems due to a faulty self concept and that they tend to behave in terms of how they perceive themselves, or according to the role forced on them by others. So if they have been labeled as a failing student this is the role they perceive for themselves and they tend to behave in terms of the role they perceive for themselves. (b) Non-promoted students who have been retained seem to have a lower …

Venison Flavor: Study Of Volatile Compounds In Cooked Deer Meat, Praful C. Vin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Venison meat has a characteristic flavor which is acceptable if mild but some venison has a strong and objectionable flavor. The subject is of practical importance where deer is hunted as sport and for food. Each year in the State of Utah, over 180,000 hunters go in search of deer and over 130,000 animals are killed. This contributes about 10 1/2 million dollars to the economy of the state from licenses, lodging, transportation and other expenses of hunting. The problem is not only important in Utah but also in the U.S.A. and other parts of the world where venison is …

The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal May 1965

The Importance Of Farm Management In The Under-Developed Economics, Hardev Singh Dhaliwal

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Throughout the history of mankind there always have been famines, disease, and poverty in some parts of the world, and this has been because of economic under - development to a great extent. For nearly a century after the publication of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" in 1776, economic development was the main interest of economists . In the late nineteenth century, Europe, America, and Australia were developing rapidly and few people were interested in raising the incomes of Africans, Arabs, and Asians . Most of the countries in Africa and Asia were under European colonial rule, and being so, …

The Use Of "Fashion Therapy" As Adjunctive Therapy In The Rehabilitation Of Psychiatric Patients, Virginia Geddes Eyestone May 1965

The Use Of "Fashion Therapy" As Adjunctive Therapy In The Rehabilitation Of Psychiatric Patients, Virginia Geddes Eyestone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mental illness is one of the greatest public health problems and foremost challenges of our time. However, because of improved medical practices and modern research methods, more mental patients are now being released and returned to society than at any other recorded period.

The mentally ill person loses touch with reality. Things that once were of primary concern are no longer important. Many mental patients become accustomed to carelessness in dress and personal habits. This state of deterioration often remains as a mark of mental illness, and the resulting inappropriate dress frequently limits the activity of the individual. The patient …

Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa May 1965

Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A major factor in the design of drainage systems is the hydraulic conductivity of the soil strata to be drained. Various methods for measuring the hydraulic conductivity of soils in both the field and the laboratory have been devised. In many cases, however, laboratory methods fail to give reliable data since the natural field conditions under which flow actually takes place cannot be duplicated in the laboratory. Hence a need exists for a field method for measuring hydraulic conductivity of soils in situ. When a large number of tests are to be performed in a given location, a simple, quick, …
