Factors That Prospective Teachers At Utah State University Considered Important In Their Decision To Enter Teacher Preparation, Kenneth Ray Powell
Factors That Prospective Teachers At Utah State University Considered Important In Their Decision To Enter Teacher Preparation, Kenneth Ray Powell
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A critical shortage of teachers became an acute threat to society following World War II according to Jantzen (1959). Because of the shortage of teachers, many institutions of higher learning and a number of interested groups have discussed and made studies on means of recruiting prospective teachers, as brought out by Riccio(1961). The studies that have been made on prospective teachers expounded mainly on the age students decided to become teachers and influences from parents, relative-teachers, teachers, guidance counselors, and teaching experience.

This report presents the results of a project conducted for the Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, U.S. Forest Service. This study entitled "Natural Resource valuation - the conceptual and operational basis for economic analysis in a mUltiple use context" had two objectives: 1) To develop concepts and procedures for determining comparable values of natural resources used in production of goods and services that move through markets. Comparability must be in terms of (a) theoretical framework and (b) stage of production and distribution process. 2) To develop concepts and procedures for determining comparable values of natural resources used in …

Progress Report On Studies Of Hydraulic Geometry Of Large Bed Element Streams, Dean F. Peterson
Reports
This study developed a general method for estimating runoff rates and associated confidence limits of a given recurrence interval for ungaged small urban watersheds. The utility of the method developed was demonstrated through its application to a southeast region of Texas. Some 200 historical rainfall-runoff events from 40 watersheds in the Houston, Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth urban areas were analyzed. Watershed data such as drainage area, percent of urbanized area channel length, average channel slope, land slope, and soil type are documented. Total rainfall amounts, intensities, durations, and mass-time distributions were determined for each storm and used to develop …
Systems Analysis Of Hydrologic Problems, J. Paul Riley, Diana Averett
Systems Analysis Of Hydrologic Problems, J. Paul Riley, Diana Averett
Reports
Introduction: Increasing national and international interest in water resources in recent years has stimulated much new activity and progress in hydrology. It is now generally recognized that the science of hydrology is basic to an understanding of water resources problems and to planning for water resources development. Accompanying this demand upon the science of hydrology is an urgent need for improved education at the university level. In resopnse to this need for improved education, the First International Seminar for Hydrology Professors was held at Urbana, Illinois, in July 1969. The Second International Seminar was held at Logan, Utah, during August …

The Function Of Social Behavior In Water Resource Development , Wade H. Andrews, Dennis C. Geertsen
The Function Of Social Behavior In Water Resource Development , Wade H. Andrews, Dennis C. Geertsen
Reports
Preface: This report is an analysis of a social survey of the middle and lower Bear River Basin of southeastern Idaho and northern Utah concerning the problem of water resource development in a semiarid region of the Western United States. The survey part of the study, carried out in the summer of 1966, dealt with both general social factors and a specific proposal made by the Bureau of Reclamation for developing water resources of the Bear River. In many respects this proposal and the resulting behavior is typical of other western river basin projects, in some other ways, however, it …

Faculty Honor Lectures
To some extent, each person is his own doctor, his own economist, his own historian, his own counselor, his own psychologist, and his own teacher.
It is said that a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Can the same be said of a man's other roles? At least for learning (which professionally intersects education and psychology) any person may have the goal of helping himself to appreciate and evaluate the role of the learning professional.
A knowledge explosion has taken place in the area of learning, as in the many fields of science in …

Ideal Family Size And Acceptable Contraceptive Devices: A Study Of L.D.S. Student Attitudes At Utah State University, Robert Ray Weber
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This study was undertaken because of the seemingly large families of the Mormons in Logan, Utah. Until this year I had never been in an area where Mormons made up a significant proportion of the population and had not realized the apparent difference in family size when compared to non-Mormons.
As a member of the Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program, I also had occasion to take two classes in Marriage and Family in the Family Life College at the University, and this also stirred my interest in the subject.
In the process of reviewing the literature on family size (fertility) and …
A Quantitative Study Of The Pathways For Estrogen Biosynthesis In Normal And Transplanted Ovaries, Carl A. Perrin
A Quantitative Study Of The Pathways For Estrogen Biosynthesis In Normal And Transplanted Ovaries, Carl A. Perrin
Biology
This investigation attempts to determine the relative importance of the two most widely accepted pathways for the biosynthesis of estrogens namely the Δ4 pathway and the Δ5 pathway. These pathways were compared in both normal and transplanted ovarian tissue using the double isotope dilution technique with 7⍺-H3-pregnenolone and 4-C14-progesterone. The effects of ovarian transplants into peripheral tissue on steroid biosynthesis in vitro, uterine weights, adrenal weights, thymus weights, and estrus cycles in vivo were noted. One ovary from each animal was transplanted to the dorsal aspect of the ear while the other ovary …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The intent of this study was to preserve the historical heritage of a small Canadian community. The thought that in the strength of a community lies the strength of a nation.
The following things were taken into consideration in giving a complete picture of Raymond: (l) The early history which entailed the parts that the Indians, the whoop-up saga, the trader, the trapper, and the Northwest Mounted Police played in the development of Western Canada and Alberta. (2) The desire of the Government to open the western prairies for settlement which brought the Mormon people who were seeking new homes …
Contact Comfort Initiated By The Nursery School Child, Lana Kay Spencer
Contact Comfort Initiated By The Nursery School Child, Lana Kay Spencer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study focused upon three aspects of child-initiated contact comfort situations; how ofter the contact was sought, with whom or why did the child seek comfort, and what incident seemed to stimulate the child's action. Data was collected from two Utah State University Nursery School Laboratories
It was found that children respond as children in that similarity is greater than differences in utilization of contact comfort.
Contact comfort is an important part of a child's functioning in social situations. The number of episodes to indicate this was substantial.
The objects and persons to whom he turns for contact comfort vary …
Some Aspects Of Geochemistry And Mineralogy Of Bear Lake Sediments, Utah-Idaho, Dean F. Davidson
Some Aspects Of Geochemistry And Mineralogy Of Bear Lake Sediments, Utah-Idaho, Dean F. Davidson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bear Lake is located in southeastern Idaho and north-central Utah. The lake has a maximum altitude of 5923 feet and an area of approximately 110 square miles. Surrounding the lake are carbonates, shales, and sandstones of lower Paleozoic through middle Mesozoic ages. The many streams and springs that originate in these rocks are probably the main contributors to the chemistry of the lake. Water from Bear River, which flows into the north end of the lake, also contributes to its chemistry.
Quartz, aragonite, dolomite, calcite and clay minerals are the main minerals in the lake-bottom sediments. Quartz is generally the …

Nutritive Values Of Russian Wildrye, Crested Wheatgrass, And Intermediate Wheatgrass Grazed By Cattle On Utah Foothill Ranges, George W. Mitchell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A comparative index to digestible nutrients was established for Russian wildrye, crested wheatgrass, and intermediate wheatgrass seeded on foothill areas of Utah. The nutritive values of these grasses were compared by the lignin ratio method, the chlorophyllan ratio method, and the in vivo rumen bag process.
Average digestion coefficients computed by the lignin ratio method for dry matter, ether extract, cellulose, and gross energy were highest for intermediate wheatgrass. Protein was more digestible for Russian wildrye. Digestible energy was adequate in all species to meet requirements for late lactation.
Results from the chlorophyllan ratio method were excessively high and were …
The Teaching Of Performance Techniques For Cornet And Trumpet, Sterling J. Morris
The Teaching Of Performance Techniques For Cornet And Trumpet, Sterling J. Morris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A study of the basic performance techniques used by cornet and trumpet specialists and the common problems encountered by cornet and trumpet players was made through reference to personal experience, personal interviews, and articles in journals, magazines, bulletins, and books.
Three areas of performance were studied: (1) tone production, (2) intonation, and (3) technical development.
It was found that there is usually more than one solution to a problem, and that each solution given must be individualized to meet each player's needs. Most of the problems players encounter can be prevented if one uses correct playing procedures while playing a …
Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs, Yaw-Tarng Shih
Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs, Yaw-Tarng Shih
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In balanced incomplete block designs, each pair of treatments is compared with equal precision, and each treatment is paired with every other treatment an equal number of times with in a common block; A is a constant for all treatments. There is one associate class for each treatment in balanced incomplete block designs. These are the most important balanced incomplete block designs, but the need sometimes arises for others; either because no suitable balanced incomplete block design exists, or because, for example, it is necessary to make some comparisons more precisely than others. We can see balanced incomplete block designs …

A Study To Discover The Supply And Demand Of Industrial Arts Teachers In Utah, L. Gyle Hollingsworth
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
With the increase in population and corresponding growth in school enrollment in the state of Utah, the need for more adequate educational facilities becomes ever more apparent. New schools will have to be built and older ones enlarged in order to accommodate the increasing enrollment and need. As a natural consequence , additional teachers will be needed to fill the positions made available by the expansion of the present educational facilities. This requirement will be supplemented by the need for maintaining the present level of teaching staff in view of the outflow of teachers from the system, some through retirement, …

A Review And Construction Of Career Development Programs In The Elementary School, Chase Driggs
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Overview
Every child has a right to acquire his own realistic selfevaluation of the career he intends to pursue, and the process of exposure to occupational information should be permitted and encouraged to start at an early age. From this point of view we need to foster concepts and techniques designed to facilitate the vocational maturation of the child. Interaction with counselors, teachers, parents, and community will increase the student's ability to understand the opportunities of the world of work as it relates to his aptitudes and interests and values and to enable him to be more aware of the …

In 1942, the Navy Department constructed a Naval Supply Depot at Clearfield, Utah. The northern part of Davis County was still in the grips of the Depression of the 1930's. Therefore, the Public Housing Administration constructed a temporary housing unit of cinderblocks under the authorization of the Lehman Act of 1940 for those who came to the Clearfield area for employment. It was named Anchorage. In 1955, the Federal Government sold Anchorage to Clearfield City for $20,451.70.
Clearfield City hired a crew of three men to maintain the project. The maintenance of the project slowly deteriorated through the years. Major …
Determining Market Areas For Livestock Grazing, Robert G. Williams
Determining Market Areas For Livestock Grazing, Robert G. Williams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Differentials between rancher costs of operating on private and public range were studied in an attempt to define market areas for livestock grazing in western United States.
The problem of defining market areas is basically a problem of grouping differentials between rancher costs of grazing on private leased range and National Forests that are reasonably homogeneous and statistically testing differences among means of the different groups.
Several methods were used to group forests with reasonably uniform differentials into market areas for cattle. A grouping of forests which have the same average grazing fee does not, however, yield market areas which …
