The Effects Of A Self-Directed Behavior Change On Self-Concept, Larry A. Leatham May 1975

The Effects Of A Self-Directed Behavior Change On Self-Concept, Larry A. Leatham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects on self-concept as a result of behavior changes made during a self-directed self-modification project were studied on 16 students at Utah State University over a period of nine weeks. Pre and post measures of self-concept administered were the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and the Well-Being Scale from the California Psychological Inventory. The research design employed was the pretest-posttest control group design. A separate analysis of covariance was run for the Total P raw score of the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and raw scores on the Well-Being Scale. The F was substantially short of the value of F needed …

The Individual And Collective Relationships Of Levels Of Aspiration. Expectation And Achievement To The Construct Of Self Concept, Mark G. Latham May 1975

The Individual And Collective Relationships Of Levels Of Aspiration. Expectation And Achievement To The Construct Of Self Concept, Mark G. Latham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A review of the literature revealed that while numerous studies exist relative to the self concept, no study was found that addressed itself specifically to the relationship and relative contribution to the self concept of aspirations, expectations and achievements. Therefore, this study was launched addressing itself to the question, "Are aspirations, expectations and achievements related to the construct of self concept?", "to what extent are they related when considered as individual variables, in combinations or as a totality?"

The FitzGibbon Rating Scale (FRS) was used as the criterion variable.

FRS scores were gathered by classroom teachers experienced with the FRS …

Community Alcohol Education And Prevention Program, John Fredricks May 1975

Community Alcohol Education And Prevention Program, John Fredricks

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate an alcohol education program for the inhabitants of region seven, state of Idaho. A questionnaire comprised of multiple choice, and true-false questions, plus an attitude scale was developed to measure changes by way of pre and post testings.

The five hypotheses of this study are:

  1. That our community and school education program would result in subjects obtaining a higher percentage of correct responses on information items on the post test administration of our questionnaire versus the pre testing.
  2. The community and school education program would result in subjects obtaining an …

Student Perceptions Of The Environment At Utah State University, Clifford R. Cahoon May 1975

Student Perceptions Of The Environment At Utah State University, Clifford R. Cahoon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The environment of Utah State University was studied by administering the College and University Environment Scales (CUES) to 299 sophomore, junior and senior students enrolled spring quarter 1975.

Scores on each scale for the university were: Practicality, 18; Scholarship, 17; Community, 19; Awareness, 22; and Propriety, 12. These figures indicate that USU has an environment which is not scholastically oriented but is open and free allowing students to develop and mature as individuals.

Differences between men and women and between in-state and out-of-state respondents were compared. Women tend to rate the university higher than men in scholarship, community, awareness and …

Carbon, Nitrogen And Algal Biomass In Cold Desert Soil Crusts, Mary Cleave Vogelsberg May 1975

Carbon, Nitrogen And Algal Biomass In Cold Desert Soil Crusts, Mary Cleave Vogelsberg

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The algal biomass, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and percent soil moisture of soil crusts for a ten month period are presented for the Curlew Valley region of northern Utah. The estimates establish a significant relationship among these parameters.

A method involving chlorophyll extraction to determine the biomass of soil algae has been developed, and from this method the following conclusions are suggested: the revegetation of soil surfaces by algal crusts after lethal treatment, without physical disruption, appears to be rapid; there is no apparent relationship between the amount of algal biomass and the type of vascular vegetation present.

Detection Of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea Virus (Ncdv) And Human Infant Reolike Diarrhea Virus, Martin Wyatt Peterson May 1975

Detection Of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea Virus (Ncdv) And Human Infant Reolike Diarrhea Virus, Martin Wyatt Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to develop a diagnostic test and conduct a survey for the neonatal calf diarrhea virus (NCDV) and human infant reolike diarrhea virus. Two immunologic methods were developed in this investigation.

Immune electron microscopy (IEM) and the fluorescent viral precipitin test (FVPT) are the methods used to detect NCDV and the human virus. Both methods are based upon the principle that viral aggregates form when the virus is reacted with anti-NCDV antibody. Aggregates in the IEM method are negatively stained and observed with the use of an electron microscope. Fluorescein labeled antibody is used in …

Speech Improvement Programs In Rural And Urban Utah Public Schools: Kindergarten, First And Second Grades, Linda B. Crozier May 1975

Speech Improvement Programs In Rural And Urban Utah Public Schools: Kindergarten, First And Second Grades, Linda B. Crozier

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Each year the public school speech therapist is confronted with large numbers of children having articulation problems. More often than not, the clinician is additionally faced with the task of selecting children with communication problems from among an extremely large population. By inspection, the list of children with articulation problems reveals a large percentage from the kindergarten, first and second grades who, if enrolled in a therapy program, would leave little time for children with problems in the upper grades.

The need for help with these articulation problems is felt almost universally by clinicians,Johnson (1967) indicated that as many as …

The Effect Of Combination Companies On Electricity Rate Structures In The United States, Wirote Manopimoke

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In general, public policy in the United States has been directed to maintaining competition. The belief has been that competitive free enterprise economy is the best means toward a higher standard of living and the preservation of personal freedom. In many industries, however, competition is imperfect. The electric power and natural gas industries are such activities.

Description And Research Study Of Four Effective Teaching Methods, Gail Ryan May 1975

Description And Research Study Of Four Effective Teaching Methods, Gail Ryan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

During my years in the public school system, I have felt that a basic deterrent to the child's personal and emotional growth has been the inability of educators to effectively communicate with children in the classroom. Gordon (1970, p. 298) states that teachers and other adults "lack the basic attitudes and skills to be effective training agents in an interpersonal relationship with a child or adolescent." Flanders (1971) feels that teachers, while behaviorally influencing children and determining the learning situation, actually have little knowledge about those methods of influence.

I am concerned with the need to train teachers to work …

Special Education And Pupil Personnel Services Offered By The Utah State Board Of Education, Mark J. Bankhead

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the United States responsibility for education is a function of the state, local school districts derive their authority from the state legislature (Graham, 1962). For many years, especially during the 19th century, the only legislative provision for the education of handicapped children was the limited support of state institutions and residential schools. Recent federal court decisions have substantiated the right of handicapped children to equal protection under the law, including an education, and made state departments of education "solely responsible for providing handicapped children with a free and public education appropriate to their individual capacities." (Abeson, 1972, p. 11) …

The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Unionization In The United States, H. Craig Petersen, Keith Lumsden Jan 1975

The Effect Of Right-To-Work Laws On Unionization In The United States, H. Craig Petersen, Keith Lumsden

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

State right-to-work laws, the subject of considerable controversy in the industrial relations field, typically state that no person will be required to become a union member or, conversely, be required to abstain from union membership as a condition of obtaining or retaining employment. Little hard evidence exists on the effect of right-to-work laws. Meyers (1955) concludes that in Texas the law does not appear to have had a noticeable impact on union strength. Kuhlman (1955) finds that the Virginia law has caused little change in hiring practices, and he cites lack of enforcement as a major cause. Novit (1969), in …

An Empirical Test Of Regulatory Effects, H. Craig Petersen Jan 1975

An Empirical Test Of Regulatory Effects, H. Craig Petersen

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Averch and Johnson have provided analytical support for the assertion that rate of return regulation causes inefficient production because of the overuse of capital. Empirical evidence in support or refutation of their thesis is just beginning to appear. This paper provides additional evidence. The regulated firm's objective is stated in terms of cost minimization subject to a regulatory constraint. The effect of changes in the allowed rate of return on capital are evaluated. It is shown that as the allowed return approaches the cost of capital, costs increase and the percentage of total costs paid to capital also increases. These …

Auroral Energy Input From Energetic Electrons And Joule Heating At Chatanika, Vincent B. Wickwar, M J. Baron, R D. Sears Jan 1975

Auroral Energy Input From Energetic Electrons And Joule Heating At Chatanika, Vincent B. Wickwar, M J. Baron, R D. Sears

All Physics Faculty Publications

With the incoherent scatter radar at Chatanika, Alaska, a wide variety of measurements can be made related to the ionosphere, magnetosphere, and neutral atmosphere. A significant parameter is the amount of energy transferred from the magnetosphere into the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere during periods of auroral activity. In this report we examine a procedure whereby the incident energy flux of auroral electrons is ascertained from radar measurements. As part of the process we compare radar-determined fluxes with those ascertained from simultaneous photometric observations at 4278 Å. The fluxes obtained by both techniques had similar magnitudes and time variations. If we …

Program For Missing Data In The Multivariate Normal Distribution, Chi-Ping Lu

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Missing data can often cause many problems in research work. Therefore for carrying out analysis, some procedure for obtaining estimates in the presence of missing data should be applied. Various theories and techniques have been developed for different types of problems.

Analysis of the Multivariate Normal Distribution with missing data is one of the areas studied. It has been discussed earlier by Wilkes (1932), Lord (1955), Edgett (1956) and Hartley (1958). They have established some basic concepts and an outline in the way of estimation.

In the last ten years, A. A. Afifi and R. M. Elasfoff also have contributed …

Modeling Phytoplankton Blooms In A Stratified Embayment, William J. Grenney Jan 1975

Modeling Phytoplankton Blooms In A Stratified Embayment, William J. Grenney

Reports

A mathematical model was developed to simulate the nitrogen limited growth dynamics of phytoplankton in a stratefied embayment. The representation of biological growth dynamics includes consideration of intracellular nutrient storage as well as the effects of temperature and light intensity. Several competing species can be represented simultaneously. Model hydrodynamics represent the effects of vertical mixing in the water column on the physical distribution of nutrients and phytoplankton. Sinking velocities of the cells are also included. The model was applied to Auke Bay, Alaska, and model responses are compared to data observed during the spring and summer of 1967.

An Evaluation Of Bartlett's Chi-Square Approximation For The Determinant Of A Matrix Of Sample Zero-Order Correlation Coefficients, Stephen M. Hattori

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The single equation least-squares regression model has been extensively studied by economists and statisticians alike in order to determine the problems which arise when particular assumptions are violated. Much literature is available in terms of the properties and limitations of the model. However, on the multicollinearity problem, there has been little research, and consequently, limited literature is available when the problem is encountered. Farrar & Glauber (1967) present a collection of techniques to use in order to detect or diagnose the occurrence of multicollinearity within a regression analysis. They attempt to define multicollinearity in terms of departures from a hypothesized …

The Computation Of Eigenvalues And Eigenvectors Of An Nxn Real General Matrix, Yeh-Hao Ma Jan 1975

The Computation Of Eigenvalues And Eigenvectors Of An Nxn Real General Matrix, Yeh-Hao Ma

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The eigenvalues of the matrix eigenproblem Ax = λx are computed by the QR double-step method and the eigenvectors by inverse power method.

The matrix A is preliminarily scaled by the equilibration and normalization procedure. The scaled matrix is then reduced to an upper-Hessenberg form by Householder's method. The QR double-step iteration is performed on the upper-Hessenberg matrix. After all the eigenvalues are found, the inverse power method is performed on the upper-Hessenberg matrix to obtain the corresponding eigenvectors.

The program consists of five subroutines which is able to find real and/or complex eigen value/vector of an nxn real matrix.
