Measurement Of Irrigation Water, Eldon M. Stock Jan 1955

Measurement Of Irrigation Water, Eldon M. Stock

Reports

Foreword: Although irrigation has been practiced in Utah for more than one hundred years, irrigation water still is being distributed to farmers with little or not thought about its measurement. A farmer would not think of buying or selling other farm commodities, such as hay, grain, beef cattle, or dairy products, without weighing or accurately measuring them, but at the same time he is often content to accept and pay for the irrigation water received with little or no knowledge as to the actual amount received, or whether or not he is receiving the amount he is entitled to. Measurement …

Bulletin No. 373 - Biennial Report Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, 1952-1954

UAES Bulletins

Our way of life is based on the ability of our agriculture to produce abundantly, efficiently, and at a low cost; and the position of agriculture today is largely a result of the research efforts of the state agricultural experiment stations and the United States Department of Agriculture. In the 66 years since the establishment of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, its scientists have found solutions to many of the problems peculiar to its location, topography, and climate. It is logical to rely on these same research forces to solve the problems of the future.

During the past biennium a …

Bulletin No. 368 - Drainage Of The Cache Valley Lowlands, Willard Gardner, Orson W. Israelsen May 1954

Bulletin No. 368 - Drainage Of The Cache Valley Lowlands, Willard Gardner, Orson W. Israelsen

UAES Bulletins

Now, slightly more than a hundred years since irrigation was first started in the West, many of the low-lying valley lands produce only poor quality pasture grasses because of waterlogging, salinity, and alkali. Other lands now produce only light crops of wild hay, and still other land areas are almost wholly non-productive because of the concentration of excessive quantities of harmful salts. This waterlogging is largely a result of irrigation on the higher lands, although rain and snow waters aggravate the situation. The water not used by the highland crops seeps into the lower areas, bringing harmful salts to the …

Survey Of Personnel Practices In Selected Industrial Organizations Of Utah, George R. Clawson May 1954

Survey Of Personnel Practices In Selected Industrial Organizations Of Utah, George R. Clawson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study deals with the factors which were responsible for the origin of personnel functions in a selected group of industrial organizations in the State of Utah. Although material is available concerning the factors which affected the establishment of personnel functions in the United States in general, there is little information regarding these factors in any one region. For this reason, an area study should be of value.

The Adaptation Of The Neutron Scattering Technique Of Soil Moisture Determination To Field Application, Robert L. Uhler May 1954

The Adaptation Of The Neutron Scattering Technique Of Soil Moisture Determination To Field Application, Robert L. Uhler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

At the present time there is a recognized need for a better means of measuring soil moisture in situ. Soil moisture measurements are required in fundamental studies of soil moisture flow and soil-plant-water relationships as well as in practical studies in irrigation practices. Various phases of engineering also utilize soil moisture data, for example, soil moisture determinations are made during the construction of earth dams, road cuts and fills, and under airfield runways. The desired method should be quick, reliable, and adaptable over the moisture range from oven dryness to saturation.

Research in nuclear physics has revealed the neutron …

A Comprehensive Study Evaluating Driver Education In The Senior High Schools From Analyses Of Driving Records Of Salt Lake City High School Students, H. Keith Bushman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Officials responsible for the control and administration of the traffic on the highways and streets of the nation are aware that good roads, markings, signals, and equipment are necessary. They also realize that the human element involved in the process of operating a vehicle is of the utmost importance. Highways can only be termed good to the extent of the actions of the drivers who use these roads.

Studies have been made throughout the nation in different states and cities to determine the results of formal training of drivers. The results of these studies answer many questions and also leave …

Student Management Practices In The Secondary School Shops Of Utah, U. Sterling Cheney May 1954

Student Management Practices In The Secondary School Shops Of Utah, U. Sterling Cheney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Background

It is wrong to think that industrial education had its beginning recently. Merely because industry has made revolutionary changes and advancements during recent years does not mean that industrial education has not been in existence for a long time. Industrial education in some forms is probably as old as the human race.

In the development of industrial education it is interesting to note that both anciently and during modern times the emphasis has been placed on the value of handwork. The cave man's life depended upon his skill and ability to make and use the various types of primitive …

Determining The Extent, In Terms Of Behavior Growth To Which Industrial Arts Teachers In Utah Are Achieving The Objectives Of Industrial Arts, A. Kent Randall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is evident that, if industrial arts teachers have subscribed to a set of objectives to guide or give direction to their teaching program, they should be used. It is not sufficient to formulate the aims then lay them aside to collect dust. Rather these aims or objectives should be used effectively as a learning guide. Upon these objectives the teacher should build his whole program.

It has been said that objectives really mean behavioral growth on the part of the students. If such is the case, the objectives must be translated into a desired behavior pattern outcome. The student's …

The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell May 1954

The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Corn occupies from 25 to 30 percent of the crop land harvested in the United States. In recent years the acreage devoted to corn in this country has been decidedly greater than that devoted to any other cultivated crop. In 1944 its dollar value exceeded the combined values of wheat, barley, rye, grain sorghums, and cotton.

Although South Dakota lies on the northwestern fringe of the corn belt, the corn crop is one of the most important in that state. Corn production in that area is somewhat unstable because of drought. Corn often fails to reach full maturity before the …

Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn May 1954

Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Field irrigation efficiency is the percentage of the water delivered to the field that becomes available to the crop as soil moisture. The so-called "evaporation losses" from wetted ground and foliage are rather difficult to measure, but are estimated by Christiansen (3) to be between 15 and 30 percent. No doubt part of this may be termed as a "loss," but the other part may be incorrectly termed as such. Many authorities claim that water must pass through the plant before being transpired into the atmosphere to be effectively used.

Weed Control Investigations On Some Important Aquatic Plants Which Impede Flow Of Western Irrigation Water, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation Mar 1954

Weed Control Investigations On Some Important Aquatic Plants Which Impede Flow Of Western Irrigation Water, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

Elusive Documents

During the past 50 years, the acreage of land placed under irrigation in the western United States has increased greatly to meet the growing demand for food and fiber production. To provide this water for crop production it is necessary not only for river waters to be impounded and irrigation canal distribution systems established but also for the irrigation waterways to be free of obstructing plant growths which impede the flow of water. This requires various types of weed control measures in order that originally designed carrying capacities of the waterways may be maintained. Methods involving new techniques developed mostly …

Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle Jan 1954

Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle

Reports

Summary and Conclusions: Sprinkler irrigation will continue to expand in Utah as well as in other irrigated areas of the world. This method of irrigation is suitable to all farm crops grown in the state and to most soils. It is particularly adapted to steep foothill areas where the water supply can be obtained at higher elevation and pumping is not necessary to develop pressure for the sprinkler systems. Also, much of the irrigated land of the state, particularly along the Wasatch front, is owned and operated by "part-time" farmers. Having the water under complete control and the irrigation schedule …

Bulletin No. 363 - Butyl Fabrics As Canal Lining Materials, C. W. Lauritzen, W. H. Peterson Oct 1953

Bulletin No. 363 - Butyl Fabrics As Canal Lining Materials, C. W. Lauritzen, W. H. Peterson

UAES Bulletins

The most important prerequisite of linings for controlling seepage losses from irrigation canals is their watertightness. In addition to being watertight, a lining must be relatively durable if it is to be economical. Rigid materials provide satisfactory linings for canals with well-drained and stable subgrades. Under other conditions, where expansive soils are encountered and ground water is a problem, a rigid lining such as concrete is not durable. Considering the many factors that govern the utility and durability of linings, the ideal lining would consist of a material with some flexibility, a material resistant to erosion and mechanical damage, and …
