From Silver To Skis: A History Of Alta, Utah, And Little Cottonwood Canyon, 1847-1966, Anthony Will Bowman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this study the former mining town and present ski resort of Alta, Utah, and the Little Cottonwood Canyon (in which Alta is located) are treated as one unit of study.

After a brief treatment of the natural setting, man's earliest activities in the region are traced through the winter of 1966. Activities which are examined include: exploring, trapping, logging, grazing, milling with the major emphasis upon quarrying, mining, skiing and settlement.

Until 1864 the region was utilized for non-mining activities. By the 1870's, mining "boomed" and various settlements were established in the canyon. The most famous of these was …

An Investigation Of Methods For Estimating Marginal Values Of Irrigation Water, Richard L. Johnson May 1967

An Investigation Of Methods For Estimating Marginal Values Of Irrigation Water, Richard L. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Marginal values of water used in irrigation are needed if water is to be optimally allocated among alternative uses. Cobb-Douglas production function analysis and linear programming methods were studied in this investigation to find their fruit-fulness in predicting these marginal values. The theoretical properties of both methods indicate that they are conceptually capable of yielding valid marginal value estimates for irrigation water.

Further investigation of the two methods was carried out as an empirical test in the Milford area of Utah. Marginal values of water used for irrigation in that area were estimated by both procedures. Although inviolable criteria for …

A Study Of The Natural Rubber Industry, With Special Reference To Thailand, Suratana Vayagool May 1967

A Study Of The Natural Rubber Industry, With Special Reference To Thailand, Suratana Vayagool

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relative share of natural rubber in the world's total rubber consumption had been decreasing from 75 percent in 1948- 1949 to 44.4 percent in 1965. Since the production of natural rubber has been rising over the same period, some predictions have been made indicating that there will be a surplus of production over consumption of natural rubber in the near future.

In the world output of natural rubber industry, Thailand ranks third, being surpassed only by Malaysia and Indonesia. Of all the exports of Thailand, rubber ranks second in value and is exceeded only by rice. Almost all of …

Description And Evaluation Of Institutions Involved In Water Allocation And Distribution In Utah, Kimber C. Webb May 1967

Description And Evaluation Of Institutions Involved In Water Allocation And Distribution In Utah, Kimber C. Webb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water development and allocation have been among the most important problems Utah has had to face throughout the past 117 years of development . When Utah's first white settlers, the Mormon pioneers, entered Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847, little met their eyes to entice their stay. The earth was so parched and dry that they were unable to scratch the surface with their plows. Less than two hours after their arrival members of the party began digging ditches and building dams to irrigate and soften the earth so they could begin plowing.

The author traced the structure and trends of world trade, which are contributed to economic growth in the past. Then studied the structure and pattern of international trade of Thailand.

The growth in Thailand's participation in world trade is significant, but the rate …

Economic Analysis Of An Iranian Water Development: The Sefeed Rood Project, Malek M. Mohtadi May 1967

Economic Analysis Of An Iranian Water Development: The Sefeed Rood Project, Malek M. Mohtadi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is an evaluation of the methods and assumptions employed by those groups responsible for preparation of the original benefit/cost data describing the Sefeed Rood project. Benefit/cost ratios reported by the French engineering firm, Cotha Sogreah, and Plan Organization in a joint study range from 2:1 to 2.6:1 (6 and 10). A priori these seem suspect since the dam plus necessary canals and diversion works are obviously large and costly and only primary benefits are considered. The question is whether the potential benefits are likely to ever yield a positive return on investment and, if so, how long a …

Relationship Between Self-Concept Discrepancies And The Expression Of Need Achievement In Children, Ian Griggs May 1967

Relationship Between Self-Concept Discrepancies And The Expression Of Need Achievement In Children, Ian Griggs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that a significant relationship exists between self-concept discrepancies and expressed need for achievement.

A self-concept discrepancy score was obtained and a low and high discrepancy group was isolated.

Expressed need for achievement was measured by the use of the Thematic Apperception Test and scored according to the Atkinson method.

Mean comparisons of need achievement scores of subjects whose discrepancies between actual and ideal self-concept were in the upper or lower one-third of the distribution were found not to be significant at the 5 percent level of confidence.

Inventory Of Economic Understanding Of Sky View High School Graduates, 1966, J. Karl Worthington

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

All societies are faced with the problems of what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce goods and services. To each of the many facets of each of these questions are many alternatives. The different economic systems in the world allow different segments or parts of the system's population to select the answers to economic questions from the alternatives to the economic questions all systems face. The quality of the decisions made is of vital importance to the progress of the particular economic system.

A Modern Philosopher's Stone, Grant Gill Smith Jan 1967

A Modern Philosopher's Stone, Grant Gill Smith

Faculty Honor Lectures

Alchemists, the forerunners of chemists, for more than a millennium sought the "Philosopher's Stone"-the transmuting agent that could change imperfect base metals such as lead and tin to the noble metals, gold and silver, and also serve as the Elixir of Life to heal the infirmities of man and prolong his existence on earth.

Where alchemy failed, chemistry, in little more than a century, has succeeded in finding the "Philosopher's Stone," for it is now not only possible to transmute one metal into another and heal many of man's infirmities, but scarcely a facet of man's life has not been …

Rectangular Cutthroat Flow Measuring Flumes, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt Jan 1967

Rectangular Cutthroat Flow Measuring Flumes, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt

Reports

Introduction: Procedures and methods for more accurate measurement and improved management of water are continually being sought to make better use of our water resources. Of all the devices and structures developed for measuring water, measuring flumes are among the most widely accepted and used. The most common measuring flume is the Parshall flume developed by Ralph Parshall at Colorado State University. Common to most flumes is the basic geometry consisting of a converging inlet section, a throat, and a diverging outlet section. Occasionally, the diverging outlet section is removed under free flow conditions, and the water is allowed to …

Subcritical Flow Over Highway Embankments, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt Jan 1967

Subcritical Flow Over Highway Embankments, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt

Reports

Introduction: At Utah State University, considerable effort has been devoted to the analysis of submerged flow at open channel constrictions. A method of analyzing subcritical (submerged) flow has been developed for flumes. Because of previous findings, it was felt that this method of analyzing submerged flow could be applied to highway embankments. A highway embankment, when overtopped by flood waters, is a form of broad-crested weir. Being a weir, the flood discharge over the embankment is only a function of the upstream depth for free flow conditions. This paper will present a method for determining the discharge under submerged flow …

A Procedure For Determining The Feasibility Of Planned Conjunctive Use Of Surface And Ground Water, Barry C. Saunders Jan 1967

A Procedure For Determining The Feasibility Of Planned Conjunctive Use Of Surface And Ground Water, Barry C. Saunders

Reports

Improved management of water resources is one means for alleviating deficiencies in water supply. One promising management technique is integration of ground water and surface water supplies and storage unites, or planned conjunctive use. In order to assess the value of this technique in relations to a particular area or basin, it is necessary to look at the economic, hydrologic, and legal system as a whole. A planning procedure is developed which will enable feasibility to be determined at a minimum cost.

The procedure consists of determining legal constraints, estimating benefits which will accrue to additional water, estimating the quantity …
