Crop Production On The Lunar Surface Using Solar Fiber Optics: Mitigating The Effects Of Prolonged Darkness With Low Temperature And Low Light, Bruce Bugbee, Julie K. Chard Jan 2002

Crop Production On The Lunar Surface Using Solar Fiber Optics: Mitigating The Effects Of Prolonged Darkness With Low Temperature And Low Light, Bruce Bugbee, Julie K. Chard

NASA

Plant metabolism and growth are reduced in low temperature. As metabolism slows, energy requirements are reduced and less light is needed. The temperature should be maintained above the chilling temperature for the plant, which is species dependent. The addition of light will allow the plant to continue to expend energy on maintenance and some growth. Here we show that low light and cool temperatures can be used to maintain plants through the 14.7 days on the dark side of the Moon. Growth resumes immediately after the light is restored.

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland Jan 2002

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds a dynamic forward-looking model describing the approximate ten-year cattle cycle. The theoretical model improves on existing models by (1) allowing cow-calf operators to make investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, (2) formally recognizing the age distribution of the capital stock, and (3) considering a mixed scheme of rational and naive expectations. The model.is then calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that endogenously generates ten-year cycles in the total stock of cattle.

Economic Principles Of Sustainable Multi-Use Fisheries Management, Keith R. Criddle Jan 2002

Economic Principles Of Sustainable Multi-Use Fisheries Management, Keith R. Criddle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Economic prescriptions for the sustainable management of fisheries have typically been framed in the context of commercial fisheries. Fishery management failures have been characterized as a consequence of disjointedness between individually rational decisions and globally sensible outcomes-the "tragedy of the commons". The solutions proposed by economists flow from the insight that rational self-interest can lead to socially beneficial outcomes when ownership is secure and prices reflect the opportunity cost of resource use. Theoretical and empirical analyses have demonstrated that sole ownership, individual quotas, territorial use rights, fishing cooperatives, and common property management regimes can promote biologically and economically sustainable fisheries. …

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc Jan 2002

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc

All USU Press Publications

From the Introduction: "Contemporary Composition is still inflected by the epistemic turn taken in the 1980s, convincing me that we need to remember what we've forgotten—namely, how impassioned resolves and thrilling discoveries were abandoned and why. I'd like to retrace the road not taken in Composition Studies, to salvage what can still be recovered... I want to inspect the wreckage, in order to show what was the promise of the Happenings for Composition, as well as the huge gray longueur of its pale replacement, Eighties Composition. In so doing, I hope to begin a reconfiguration of our field's pre- and …

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Supplemental Instruction: The Problem Of Selection Bias And Limited Dependent Variables, Tyler J. Bowles, Jason Jones Jan 2002

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Supplemental Instruction: The Problem Of Selection Bias And Limited Dependent Variables, Tyler J. Bowles, Jason Jones

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Single equation regression models have been used rather extensively to test the effectiveness of Supplemental Instruction (SI). This approach, however, fails to account for the possibility that SI attendance and the outcome of SI attendance are jointly determined endogenous variables. Moreover, the standard approach fails to account for the fact that these two endogenous variables are categorical. This paper presents and applies a simultaneous equation, limited dependent variable model of SI effectiveness. Our analysis suggests that results from applying this type of model may differ markedly from the traditional statistical models applied in SI research. Specifically, our results suggests that …

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Unligated And Ligated Feii Porphyrins, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner Jan 2002

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Unligated And Ligated Feii Porphyrins, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The electronic structure and bonding in a series of unligated and ligated FeII porphyrins (FeP) are investigated by density functional theory (DFT). All the unligated four-coordinate iron porphyrins have a 3A2g ground state that arises from the (dxy)2(dz2)2(dπ)2 configuration. The calculations confirm experimental results on Fe tetraphenylporphine but do not support the resonance Raman assignment of Fe octaethylporphine as 3Eg, nor the early assignment of Fe octamethyltetrabenzporphine as 5B2g. For the six-coordinate Fe–P( …

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Metal Porphyrins, Metal=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A systematic theoretical study of the electronic structure and bonding in metal meso-tetraphenyl porphines MTPP, M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn has been carried out using a density functional theory method. The calculations provide a clear elucidation of the ground states for the MTPPs and for a series of [MTPP]x ions (x = 2+, 1+, 1−, 2−, 3−, 4−), which aids in understanding a number of observed electronic properties. The calculation supports the experimental assignment of unligated FeTPP as 3A2g, which arises from the configuration (dxy)2(dz …

Failure Analysis: Crop Production On The Lunar Surface, Julie K. Chard, Giridhar Akula, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2002

Failure Analysis: Crop Production On The Lunar Surface, Julie K. Chard, Giridhar Akula, Bruce Bugbee

NASA

We have sought to optimize conditions for crop yield for many years, but optimal conditions will not always be cost effective. More importantly, environmental control systems routinely fail, and we need to learn how to gracefully recover from these failures.

Failures of the power supply system are among the most common and most detrimental of all system failures. A battery back-up could supply a small amount of power during a power outage, but we need to know how to best utilize the back-up power.

Early in this project, it became clear that the detrimental effects of a power loss could …

Temporal Variation In Community Composition, Pigmentation, And Fv/Fm Of Desert Cyanobacterial Soil Crusts, M. A. Bowker, S. C. Reed, J. Belnap, S. L. Phillips Jan 2002

Temporal Variation In Community Composition, Pigmentation, And Fv/Fm Of Desert Cyanobacterial Soil Crusts, M. A. Bowker, S. C. Reed, J. Belnap, S. L. Phillips

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Summers on the Colorado Plateau (USA) are typified by harsh conditions such as high temperatures, brief soil hydration periods, and high UV and visible radiation. We investigated whether community composition, physiological status, and pigmentation might vary in biological soil crusts as a result of such conditions. Representative surface cores were sampled at the ENE, WSW, and top microaspects of 20 individual soil crust pedicels at a single site in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, in spring and fall of 1999. Frequency of cyanobacterial taxa, pigment concentrations, and dark adapted quantum yield (Fv/Fm) were measured for each core. The frequency of major …

Integrated Resource Management Courses : Lessons Learned After Six Years, Hugh O. Canham Jan 2002

Integrated Resource Management Courses : Lessons Learned After Six Years, Hugh O. Canham

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Integrated management courses, or capstone courses, have been inserted into many forestry and natural resource college curricula. The general intent is to have the students bring together the knowledge they have gained in other courses and synthesize an holistic solution to some set of issues. At Syracuse such a course was made a required part of the senior year in the Forest Resources Management program starting in the fall of 1996. The author has taught the course almost every semester, sometimes in conjunction with others. Over the years various procedures were tried, different cases utilized, and different requirements placed on …

Online Forest Biology And Tree Identification Graduate Class For Public School Educators, John R. Seiler, W. Mike Aust Jan 2002

Online Forest Biology And Tree Identification Graduate Class For Public School Educators, John R. Seiler, W. Mike Aust

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

As a result of certification and accreditation standards, public school teachers are often required to take graduate education courses. However, it is often difficult for these teachers/students to take courses in residence at campuses. Further, there is often a shortage of specialized courses in their area of teaching. There is also a demand for natural-resource-based classes since, in Virginia, many of the standards of learning can be effectively taught using examples from forests. In response to the above issues, we developed an entirely online graduate course that covered forest biology, management, and tree identification. In the summer of 2001, 24 …

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The paper will summarize our new effort to develop an integrated distance education / professional education course on forest certification and sustainable forest management (SFM) in the Southeast. The course will present a practical, applied view of the elements of forest certification for private forestlands in the South- east, as well as a review of the SFM criteria and indicators. The innovative course design will present the material in five different modules, covering international SFM agreements, forest certification systems and processes, social and biological issues in certification, and certification process and record-keeping requirements.

Comparison Of Academic Statistics Of Two-Year College Transfer And Native Fisheries And Wildlife Students At The University Of Missouri, Janice E. Faaborg, Joshua J. Millspaugh, Mark R. Ryan Jan 2002

Comparison Of Academic Statistics Of Two-Year College Transfer And Native Fisheries And Wildlife Students At The University Of Missouri, Janice E. Faaborg, Joshua J. Millspaugh, Mark R. Ryan

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

As an increasing number of high school graduates take advantage of less-stringent economic and entrance requirements offered through two-year colleges, concern is mounting at the University of Missouri (MU) and other major universities about the ability of two-year college transfer students to compete in advanced, preprofessional curricula such as Fisheries and Wildlife. We assessed the validity of this concern by examining the academic histories of two-year college transfer students (n=21), students transferring into our department from another MU program (n=23), and students who had enrolled in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences (FW) as freshmen (n=56). Two-year college transfer students were less …

Looking Before We Leap: A Three-Part Study To Prepare For College Reorganization, Claudia L. Anderson, Mark W. Brunson Jan 2002

Looking Before We Leap: A Three-Part Study To Prepare For College Reorganization, Claudia L. Anderson, Mark W. Brunson

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

In Spring 2001 the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University voted on a plan for reorganization of departments and curricula that is intended to better reflect future natural resource science and management needs. To prepare for curriculum redesign we evaluated the career objectives and educational needs of undergraduate students in natural resources and related fields by means of a three-part study of relevant groups: current students, public agency professionals, and prospective students who chose nonnatural resources majors. Students typically seek traditional jobs with public agencies, but a large proportion also expect to attend graduate school. Comparison of seniors …

From "Natural Resources" To "Environment": Broadening Our Mission And Message, Robert Manning, Donald Dehayes Jan 2002

From "Natural Resources" To "Environment": Broadening Our Mission And Message, Robert Manning, Donald Dehayes

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

This important conference (the fourth in a series) addresses higher education in “natural resources.” Indeed, most participants are affiliated with programs, departments, schools, or colleges of natural resources and/or related professional terms such as conservation, forestry, wildlife biology, range science, and park management. By professional standards, these areas of study and practice are relatively young. However, the words we use to describe them (and ourselves) are a century or more old. Gifford Pinchot was America’s first professional forester, and he coined the word “conservation” early in his career (or so he writes in his book, Breaking New Ground). The Conservation …

I'S And E'S Of Natural Resources Education, Or, Moving From Learner To Teacher, Gary J. San Julian

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Natural Resources provide some of the most fertile and interesting subjects for an educator to present. Yet, our undergraduate and graduate students are poorly prepared to be educators. Few Master's or Doctoral programs require any education courses before a degree is bestowed. We touch hundreds of students each year in our classes who will become professionals, but are we giving them the tools to pass on their love of the resource to the next generation? Undergraduates and graduate students who are taking our courses should, in my opinion, have the skills and more importantly the desire to pass on the …

Potential Strategies For Managing Utah's Wolf-Livestock Conflicts, T. Adam Switalski, Trey Simmons, Shiree L. Duncan, Andreas S. Chavez, Robert H. Schmidt

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) classifies gray wolf populations as either endangered, threatened, or nonessential / experimental. Therefore, if wolves enter Utah under their current legal classification, the USFWS will be the primary agency responsible for wolf management (see Section 2). For the last 30 years, this agency has been responsible for managing recovering wolf populations in other parts of the United States, both in the Great Lakes and the Rockies. Unfortunately, wolves have come into conflict with livestock in all of their recovery areas. As a result, the USFWS has taken various measures to minimize these …

Biological Aspects Of Wolf Recolonization In Utah, T. Adam Switalski, Trey Simmons, Shiree L. Duncan, Andreas S. Chavez, Robert H. Schmidt

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Wolves have been one of the most scientifically examined of all wildlife species (Mech, 1995b). Many studies have focused on the effects of wolf reintroductions and recolonization. In this section, we address how wolves may naturally disperse into Utah, highlight areas identified in our habitat model as constituting the most favorable wolf habitat in Utah, estimate potential wolf populations in Utah, and describe what is currently known about the influence of wolves on an ecosystem.
