Perceptions Of Emotional Intelligence Preparation And Industry Expectations For Utah State University Mba Graduates, Arthur D. Waller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study sought to determine whether an MBA degree from Utah State University (USU) was meeting the emotional intelligence (EI) needs of the workplace from the perception of its graduates. This research assessed perception of EI skills with a researcher-designed instrument that consisted of a 22-question survey that was e-mailed to USU students who completed an MBA between 2000 and 2006. The survey questionnaire given to MBA graduates was titled Assessment of Emotional Intelligence and was divided into three distinct parts. The first category (questions 1-10) had to do with industry expectations as perceived by MBA graduates. The second category …

Seepage Evaluations In Cache Valley Irrigation Canals, Katerine N. Molina May 2008

Seepage Evaluations In Cache Valley Irrigation Canals, Katerine N. Molina

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Estimation of seepage was done in 39 selected reaches of 11 irrigation canals in the Logan and Blacksmith Fork Irrigation Systems of Cache Valley, Utah. The measurements were performed from June to October, 2008, which includes part of the irrigation season for these canals. The inflow-outflow method was used to measure seepage, in which area and velocities were measured under steady flow conditions. Velocity measurements were done with an acoustic flow meter and the mean velocity was determined using the reduced-point method (velocity measurements at 0.2, 0.6 and or 0.8 of the depth from the water surface).

As a result, …

Mixtures Of Truncated Normal Data Assimilation Models For Parameter Estimation And Prediction In Hydrological Systems, Darl D. Flake Ii May 2008

Mixtures Of Truncated Normal Data Assimilation Models For Parameter Estimation And Prediction In Hydrological Systems, Darl D. Flake Ii

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Physical models in the hydrological sciences are often calibrated using methods that do not formally quantify uncertainty in the model parameters. Additionally, many competing hydrological models exist and are used to model the same processes. Considering existing mechanistic models of rainfall-run off in a statistical context can assist hydrologists in understanding the true physical process taking place. This paper introduces a data assimilation mixture model of runoff that yields statistical estimates of hydrological mode l parameters and predictions. This statistical model incorporates two commonly used hydrological models, each with strengths and weaknesses. The mixture framework allows comparisons between models as …

Information about these families and pedigrees raises the potential for studies …

Comparison Of Machine Learning Algorithms For Modeling Species Distributions: Application To Stream Invertebrates From Western Usa Reference Sites, Margi Dubal May 2008

Comparison Of Machine Learning Algorithms For Modeling Species Distributions: Application To Stream Invertebrates From Western Usa Reference Sites, Margi Dubal

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Machine learning algorithms are increasingly being used by ecologists to model and predict the distributions of individual species and entire assemblages of sites. Accurate prediction of distribution of species is an important factor in any modeling. We compared prediction accuracy of four machine learning algorithms-random forests, classification trees, support vector machines, and gradient boosting machines to a traditional method, linear discriminant models (LDM), on a large set of stream invertebrate data collected at 728 reference sites in the western United States. Classifications were constructed for individual species and for assemblages of sites clustered a priori by similarity on biological characteristics. …

Development Of A Microelectrode Array Sensing System For Water Quality Monitoring, Robert D. Gardner May 2008

Development Of A Microelectrode Array Sensing System For Water Quality Monitoring, Robert D. Gardner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis reports the design and fabrication of a low-cost reliable microelectrode array sensing platform and its application toward water quality monitoring, including heavy metal ion detection. Individually addressable microelectrodes were designed in a planar array on a nonconductive glass substrate by a photolithography method. The size, shape, composition, and functionality of the microelectrodes were theoretically explored in order to maximize performance.

The microelectrode array sensing platform was proven and characterized in the K3Fe(CN)6 electrochemical standard using cyclic voltammetry. The sensor platform exhibited well defined voltammograms and had increased sensitivity relative to a commercially available microelectrode of similar size. …

Study design was single case, with six replications, utilizing comparison of pre- and post-intervention scores on physiological and psychological indicators of distress and wellbeing. Findings were inconsistent across participants and measures, though generally included beneficial increases in positive affect (i.e ., C = 0.567 , Z = 2 071, p < 0.05) and perceived physical health (i.e., C = 0489, Z = 1. 721, …

Growth And Water Relations Of Native Wheatgrass Populations, Brian P. Bell May 2008

Growth And Water Relations Of Native Wheatgrass Populations, Brian P. Bell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Screening populations for development into released plant materials can be done inexpensively and in a timely manner. A common approach has been to quantify the amount of shoot dry mass produced as a surrogate for competitiveness. Besides dry mass production , other morphological characteristics have been employed , but physiological parameters have received less emphasis. Dry mass production may be an important characteristic, but identifying the traits responsible can be just as imperative . Populations with greater drought tolerance may be less impacted by competition for water from weeds, which could lead to greater establishment of desirable grasses on disturbed …

Distinct Timing Mechanisms Produce Discrete And Continuous Movements, Raoul Huys, Breanna E. Studenka, Nicole L. Rheaume, Howard N. Zelaznik, Viktor K. Jirsa Apr 2008

Distinct Timing Mechanisms Produce Discrete And Continuous Movements, Raoul Huys, Breanna E. Studenka, Nicole L. Rheaume, Howard N. Zelaznik, Viktor K. Jirsa

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

The differentiation of discrete and continuous movement is one of the pillars of motor behavior classification. Discrete movements have a definite beginning and end, whereas continuous movements do not have such discriminable end points. In the past decade there has been vigorous debate whether this classification implies different control processes. This debate up until the present has been empirically based. Here, we present an unambiguous non-empirical classification based on theorems in dynamical system theory that sets discrete and continuous movements apart. Through computational simulations of representative modes of each class and topological analysis of the flow in state space, we …

Geophysical Imaging Of Watershed Subsurface Patterns And Prediction Of Soil Texture And Water Holding Capacity, H. Abdu, D. A. Robinson, M. Seyfried, Scott B. Jones Apr 2008

Geophysical Imaging Of Watershed Subsurface Patterns And Prediction Of Soil Texture And Water Holding Capacity, H. Abdu, D. A. Robinson, M. Seyfried, Scott B. Jones

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

The spatial distribution of subsurface soil textural properties across the landscape is an important control on the hydrological and ecological function of a watershed. Traditional methods of mapping soils involving subjective assignment of soil boundaries are inadequate for studies requiring a quantitative assessment of the landscape and its subsurface connectivity and storage capacity. Geophysical methods such as electromagnetic induction (EMI) provide the possibility of obtaining high-resolution images across a landscape to identify subtle changes in subsurface soil patterns. In this work we show how EMI can be used to image the subsurface of a ∼38 ha watershed. We present an …

Cultivating Systemic Thinking In The Next Generation Of Business Leaders, J. B. Atwater, Vijay R. Kannan, Alan A. Stephens Mar 2008

Cultivating Systemic Thinking In The Next Generation Of Business Leaders, J. B. Atwater, Vijay R. Kannan, Alan A. Stephens

Management Faculty Publications

In response to criticism that they do not train students to be effective decision makers, many business schools have attempted to modify their graduate management programs. We suggest that a primary ingredient missing from these attempts is a comprehensive treatment of systemic thinking. While most business functions teach about the systems housed within them, we suggest that few teach their students to think systemically. We propose a 3-part description of systemic thinking and provide results of a survey that investigates the claim that students are not being taught to think systemically.

Active And Attentive Ladar Scanning For Automatic Target Recognition, M. Mamanakis, R.R. Fullmer, R.T. Pack, Scott E. Budge

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this work we examine the dynamic implications of active and attentive scanning for LADAR based automatic target/object recognition and show that a dynamically constrained, scanner based, ATR system's ability to identify objects in real-time is improved through attentive scanning. By actively and attentively scanning only salient regions of an image at the density required for recognition, the amount of time it takes to find a target object in a random scene is reduced. A LADAR scanner's attention is guided by identifying areas-of-interest using a visual saliency algorithm on electro-optical images of a scene to be scanned. Identified areas-of-interest are …

Evaluating The Use Of Landsat 30m Enhanced Thematic Mapper To Monitor Vegetation Cover In Shrub-Steppe Environments, R. Douglas Ramsey, Dennis L. Wright, Chris Mcginty

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Many land‐management agencies are caught between decreased budgets and increasing public interest. Furthermore, semi‐arid landscapes are sensitive to management prescriptions and use, and require a significant amount of monitoring in order to assess vegetation productivity and health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) Imagery to monitor seasonal vegetation cover in a shrub‐steppe ecosystem. The study area, managed by The Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration, consists of a shrub‐steppe environment in south‐central Utah. Biotic (tree, shrub, grass, and forbs) and abotic (slope, aspect, elevation, landform type, and slope shape) …
