Seep Ridge Road Paving Project Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management Apr 2011

Seep Ridge Road Paving Project Environmental Assessment, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (UT)

This Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared to disclose and analyze the environmental consequences of the Seep Ridge Road Paving Project as proposed by Uintah County (hereafter referred to as the county). The EA is a site-specific analysis of potential impacts that could result with the implementation of the Proposed Action or an alternative to the Proposed Action. The EA assists the BLM in project planning and in making a determination as to whether any “significant” impacts could result from the analyzed actions. An EA also provides evidence for determining whether a statement of “Finding of No Significant Impact” (FONSI) …

Collaborative Strategic Board Games As A Site For Distributed Computational Thinking, Matthew Berland, Victor R. Lee Apr 2011

Collaborative Strategic Board Games As A Site For Distributed Computational Thinking, Matthew Berland, Victor R. Lee

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper examines the idea that contemporary strategic board games represent an informal, interactional context in which complex computational thinking takes place. When games are collaborative – that is, a game requires that players work in joint pursuit of a shared goal – the computational thinking is easily observed as distributed across several participants. This raises the possibility that a focus on such board games are profitable for those who wish to understand computational thinking and learning in situ. This paper introduces a coding scheme, applies it to the recorded discourse of three groups of game players, and provides qualitative …

Revisiting Soil C And N Sampling: Quantitative Pits Vs. Rotary Cores, Benjamin M. Rau, April M. Melvin, Dale W. Johnson, Christine L. Goodale, Robert R. Blank, Guinevere Fredriksen, Watkins W. Miller, James D. Murphy, Donald E. Todd Jr., Roger F. Walker Mar 2011

Revisiting Soil C And N Sampling: Quantitative Pits Vs. Rotary Cores, Benjamin M. Rau, April M. Melvin, Dale W. Johnson, Christine L. Goodale, Robert R. Blank, Guinevere Fredriksen, Watkins W. Miller, James D. Murphy, Donald E. Todd Jr., Roger F. Walker

Articles

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide and its feedbacks with global climate have sparked renewed interest in quantifying ecosystem carbon (C) budgets, including quantifying belowground pools. Belowground nutrient budgets require accurate estimates of soil mass, coarse fragment content, and nutrient concentrations. It has long been thought that the most accurate measurement of soil mass and coarse fragment content has come from excavating quantitative soil pits. However, this methodology is labor intensive and time consuming. We propose that diamond-tipped rotary cores are an acceptable if not superior alternative to quantitative soil pits for the measurement of soil mass, coarse fragment content, C and …

Noise And Complexity In Human Postural Control: Interpreting The Different Estimations Of Entropy, Christopher K. Rhea, Tobin A. Silver, S. Lee Hong, Joong Hyun Ryu, Breanna E. Studenka, Charmayne M. L. Hughes, Jeffrey M. Haddad Mar 2011

Noise And Complexity In Human Postural Control: Interpreting The Different Estimations Of Entropy, Christopher K. Rhea, Tobin A. Silver, S. Lee Hong, Joong Hyun Ryu, Breanna E. Studenka, Charmayne M. L. Hughes, Jeffrey M. Haddad

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Background: Over the last two decades, various measures of entropy have been used to examine the complexity of human postural control. In general, entropy measures provide information regarding the health, stability and adaptability of the postural system that is not captured when using more traditional analytical techniques. The purpose of this study was to examine how noise, sampling frequency and time series length influence various measures of entropy when applied to human center of pressure (CoP) data, as well as in synthetic signals with known properties. Such a comparison is necessary to interpret data between and within studies that use …

Leaf Number Indicates Salt Tolerance Of Young Seedling Families Of European Aspen (Populus Tremula L.) Growing In Different Soils, Lu-Min Vaario, Kim Yrjälä, Matti Rousi, Timo Sipila, Pertti Pulkkinen Mar 2011

Leaf Number Indicates Salt Tolerance Of Young Seedling Families Of European Aspen (Populus Tremula L.) Growing In Different Soils, Lu-Min Vaario, Kim Yrjälä, Matti Rousi, Timo Sipila, Pertti Pulkkinen

Aspen Bibliography

Soil salinity limits plant productivity and quality. We evaluated the response of 12 aspen (Populus tremula) families to salt stress in two different soils irrigated for 4-weeks with 0, 80 or 160 mM saline solution. Easily measurable characteristics such as shoot height, leaf number, dry mass as well as the distribution of sodium (Na+) ions were measured in 5-month-old aspen seedlings raised in controlled greenhouse conditions on two different soils. Growth among families varied significantly, and the interaction between family and soil type was significant. From 2–5 months, leaf number correlated with that of the first month and salin-ity tolerance. …

Linking To Scientific Data: Identity Problems Of Unruly And Poorly Bounded Digital Objects, Laura A. Wynholds Mar 2011

Linking To Scientific Data: Identity Problems Of Unruly And Poorly Bounded Digital Objects, Laura A. Wynholds

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Within information systems, a significant aspect of search and retrieval across information objects, such as datasets, journal articles, or images, relies on the identity construction of the objects. This paper uses identity to refer to the qualities or characteristics of an information object that make it definable and recognizable, and can be used to distinguish it from other objects. Identity, in this context, can be seen as the foundation from which citations, metadata and identifiers are constructed. In recent years the idea of including datasets within the scientific record has been gaining significant momentum, with publishers, granting agencies and libraries …
