Outside Inside: A Survey Of Field Activities In The Virtual And Non-Virtual Natural Resources Classroom, Kieran J. Lindsey, Robert Bush Mar 2012

Outside Inside: A Survey Of Field Activities In The Virtual And Non-Virtual Natural Resources Classroom, Kieran J. Lindsey, Robert Bush

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

When the possibility of incorporating the virtual classroom into a natural resources curriculum is broached, faculty members often will argue that this approach to education doesn’t make sense for a discipline in which future professionals need to walk away from their computers, at least occasionally, and go outside. Similar discussions with colleagues at our own university, and with faculty at other institutions involved in the Natural Resources Distance Learning Consortium, caused us to wonder how and how often field experiences are actually incorporated into both non-virtual and virtual classrooms. We searched the employee directories of 294 U.S. universities to find …

High School Science Teachers And Forestry Education: How Are They Connected?, Shannon M. Fowler, John F. Munsell

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

A quantitative study of high school science teachers in the five state Southern Piedmont region of the United States investigating their attitudes toward and understanding of forestry as well as the extent to which they are teaching forestry concepts was conducted. Specific factors that were addressed include teachers’ attitudes toward the impacts of forest management, specific forest management practices, forest management goals, the forestry profession, and forestry education. The primary method of data collection for this study was a web-based survey and data analysis included calculating descriptive statistics, performing exploratory factor analysis and producing several regression models. Very few similar …

Recruiting And Advising Minority Students In Cooperative Land-Grant/Hbcu Programs, Kevin M. Hunt Mar 2012

Recruiting And Advising Minority Students In Cooperative Land-Grant/Hbcu Programs, Kevin M. Hunt

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Many agriculture and natural resources academic departments at southern land-grant institutions often have a difficult time attracting minority students directly from high schools. Resultantly, some have developed cooperative programs with related departments at historically black colleges and universities to help diversify their student body. Based on the course offerings at HBCUs, these programs usually require that students attend two to four semesters at the land-grant institution. These cooperative programs provide benefits to program students as well as the partner institutions, but also present unique challenges to advisors at the land-grant universities charged with mentoring these students. The objectives of this …

Factors Influencing Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources, Terry Sharik, Robert Lilieholm, William Richardson Mar 2012

Factors Influencing Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources, Terry Sharik, Robert Lilieholm, William Richardson

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Our 30-year record of undergraduate enrollment trends in natural resources shows pronounced cyclical swings over time, well beyond those for enrollments across all disciplines in four-year U.S. institutions of higher learning. Despite large increases in overall student enrollments, current natural resources enrollments are at about the same level as historic highs in the early 1980s and mid 1990s, and are increasingly dominated by broad degrees in natural resources. The reasons for these cycles are many and complex, and appear to be influenced by the political climate, unemployment rates, changing public values towards forests, a perceived lack of jobs and low …

14 Rainfall Prediction Using Teleconnection Patterns Through The Application Of Artificial Neural Networks, Gholam Abbas Fallah-Ghalhari Mar 2012

14 Rainfall Prediction Using Teleconnection Patterns Through The Application Of Artificial Neural Networks, Gholam Abbas Fallah-Ghalhari

Modern Climatology

All aspects of human life are, directly or indirectly, affected by climatic processes. This effect is especially noticeable in such fields as agriculture, irrigation, economy, telecommunications, transportation, traffic, air pollution and military industries (Haltiner & Williams 1980). A number of researchers have studied the possibility of forecasting rainfall several months in advance using climate indices such as SOI, PDOI and NPI (e.g. Silverman and Dracup 2000). A well-known atmospheric phenomenon is the Southern Oscillation (SO). The SO is an atmospheric see-saw process in the tropical Pacific sea level pressure between the eastern and western hemispheres associated with the El Niño …

10 Cenozoic Climatic Record For Monsoonal Rainfall Over The Indian Region, Mohan Kuppusamy, Prosenjit Ghosh Mar 2012

10 Cenozoic Climatic Record For Monsoonal Rainfall Over The Indian Region, Mohan Kuppusamy, Prosenjit Ghosh

Modern Climatology

Atmospheric carbon dioxide level is one of the major drivers responsible for the global temperature change (Lacis et al., 2010). The role of carbon dioxide as an important greenhouse gas, and its contribution towards regulation of global surface temperature has been recognized for over a century (Arrhenius, 1896; Chamberlin, 1899; Royer, 2006). The ice core records along with other proxy based records provides an evidence signifying a strong coupling between CO2 and global temperature for at least the last ~65 m.y. (million years) (Petit et al., 1999; Siegenthaler et al., 2005, Zachos et al., 2001). The intensification of convective hydrological …

Modern Climatology - Full Text, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Robert R. Gillies

Modern Climatology

Climatology, the study of climate, is no longer regarded as a single discipline that treats climate as something that fluctuates only within the unchanging boundaries described by historical statistics. The field has recognized that climate is something that changes continually under the influence of physical and biological forces and so, cannot be understood in isolation but rather, is one that includes diverse scientific disciplines that play their role in understanding a highly complex coupled “whole system” that is the Earth’s climate. The modern era of climatology is echoed in this book. On the one hand it offers a broad synoptic …

Multi-Decadal Drought Cycles In The Great Basin Recorded By The Great Salt Lake: Modulation From A Transition-Phase Teleconnection, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Robert R. Gillies, Thomas Reichler Mar 2012

Multi-Decadal Drought Cycles In The Great Basin Recorded By The Great Salt Lake: Modulation From A Transition-Phase Teleconnection, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Robert R. Gillies, Thomas Reichler

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

This study investigates the meteorological conditions associated with multidecadal drought cycles as revealed by lake level fluctuation of the Great Salt Lake (GSL). The analysis combined instrumental, proxy, and simulation datasets, including the Twentieth Century Reanalysis version 2, the North American Drought Atlas, and a 2000-yr control simulation of the GFDL Coupled Model, version 2.1 (CM2.1). Statistical evidence from the spectral coherence analysis points to a phase shift amounting to 6–9 yr between the wet–dry cycles in the Great Basin and the warm–cool phases of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO). Diagnoses of the sea surface temperature and atmospheric …

Western Striped And Western Spotted Cucumber Beetles, Diane Alston, Dennis Worwood

All Current Publications

Cucumber beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) are pests of cucurbits throughout the U.S. Western species of cucumber beetles will also feed on leaves of other vegetables (especially corn, tomato, potato, and bean) and soft fruits (especially apricot and peach) (Table 1). In Utah, watermelon and cantaloupe have been the main commercial crops attacked. In home gardens, zucchini, cucumber and cantaloupe have suffered the most damage.

Glycolate Oxidase Modulates Reactive Oxygen Species–Mediated Signal Transduction During Nonhost Resistance In Nicotiana Benthamiana And Arabidopsis, Clemencia M. Rojas, Muthappa Senthil-Kumar, Keri Wang, Choong-Min Ryu, Amita Kaundal, Kirankumar S. Mysore Feb 2012

Glycolate Oxidase Modulates Reactive Oxygen Species–Mediated Signal Transduction During Nonhost Resistance In Nicotiana Benthamiana And Arabidopsis, Clemencia M. Rojas, Muthappa Senthil-Kumar, Keri Wang, Choong-Min Ryu, Amita Kaundal, Kirankumar S. Mysore

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

In contrast to gene-for-gene disease resistance, nonhost resistance governs defense responses to a broad range of potential pathogen species. To identify specific genes involved in the signal transduction cascade associated with nonhost disease resistance, we used a virus-induced gene-silencing screen in Nicotiana benthamiana, and identified the peroxisomal enzyme glycolate oxidase (GOX) as an essential component of nonhost resistance. GOX-silenced N. benthamiana and Arabidopsis thaliana GOX T-DNA insertion mutants are compromised for nonhost resistance. Moreover, Arabidopsis gox mutants have lower H2O2 accumulation, reduced callose deposition, and reduced electrolyte leakage upon inoculation with hypersensitive response–causing nonhost pathogens. Arabidopsis gox mutants were not …

Fabrication And Performance Of A Microfluidic Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis System, K. D. Jo, J. E. Schiffbauer, Boyd F. Edwards, R. Lloyd Carroll, A. T. Timperman Feb 2012

Fabrication And Performance Of A Microfluidic Traveling-Wave Electrophoresis System, K. D. Jo, J. E. Schiffbauer, Boyd F. Edwards, R. Lloyd Carroll, A. T. Timperman

All Physics Faculty Publications

A microfluidic traveling-wave electrophoresis (TWE) system is reported that uses a locally defined traveling electric field wave within a microfluidic channel to achieve band transport and separation. Low voltages, over a range of-0.5 to +0.5 V, are used to avoid electrolysis and other detrimental redox reactions while the short distance between electrodes, ∼25 μm, provides high electric fields of ∼200 V cm -1. It is expected that the low voltage requirements will simplify the future development of smaller portable devices. The TWE device uses four interdigitated electrode arrays: one interdigitated electrode array pair is on the top of the …

Measurement Methods Of Electron Emission Over A Full Range Of Sample Charging, R. Hoffmann, John R. Dennison Feb 2012

Measurement Methods Of Electron Emission Over A Full Range Of Sample Charging, R. Hoffmann, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

Spacecraft charging codes require accurate models of electron yields as a function of accumulated charge to correctly predict the charge build up on spacecraft. The accumulated charge creates equilibrium surface potentials on spacecraft resulting from interactions with the space plasma environment. There is, however, a complex relation between these emission properties and the charge built up in spacecraft insulators.

This paper focuses on different methods appropriate to determine the fundamental electronic material property of total electron yield as the materials accumulate charge. Three methods for determining the uncharged total yield are presented:

(i) The DC Continuous Beam Method is a …

Charge Enhanced Contamination And Environmental Degradation Of Misse-6 Suspecs Materials, John R. Dennison, Amberly Evans, Danielle Fulmer, Joshua L. Hodges

All Physics Faculty Publications

The effects of prolonged exposure to the LEO space environment and charge-enhanced contamination on optical, thermal, and electron emission and transport properties of common spacecraft materials have been investigated by comparing pre- and post-flight characterization measurements. The State of Utah Space Environment and Contamination Study (SUSpECS) deployed in March 2008 on board the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE-6) payload, was exposed for ~18 months on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS), and was retrieved in September 2009. A total of 165 samples were mounted on three separate SUSpECS panels on the ram and wake sides on the …
