An Indigoidine Biosynthetic Gene Cluster From Streptomyces Chromofuscus Atcc 49982 Contains An Unusual Indb Homologue, Dayu Yu, Fuchao Xu, Jonathan Valiente, Siyuan Wang, Jixun Zhan
Biological Engineering Faculty Publications
A putative indigoidine biosynthetic gene cluster was located in the genome of Streptomyces chromofuscus ATCC 49982. The silent 9.4-kb gene cluster consists of five open reading frames, named orf1, Sc-indC, Sc-indA, Sc-indB, and orf2, respectively. Sc-IndC was functionally characterized as an indigoidine synthase through heterologous expression of the enzyme in both Streptomyces coelicolor CH999 and Escherichia coli BAP1. The yield of indigoidine in E. coli BAP1 reached 2.78 g/l under the optimized conditions. The predicted protein product of Sc-indB is unusual and much larger than any other reported IndB-like protein. The N-terminal portion of this enzyme resembles IdgB and the …

The CXBN mission goal is to significantly increase the Cosmic X-Ray Background measurement precision in the 30-50 keV range. The mission addresses a fundamental science question central to our understanding of the structure, origin, and evolution of the universe by potentially lending insight into the high energy background radiation. The CXBN spacecraft will map the Extragalactic Diffuse X-Ray Background (DXRB) with a new Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detector. The DXRB measurement will pose a powerful tool for understanding the early universe and a window to the far-away universe. The science objectives were condensed into a novel spacecraft concept characterized by …

Enabling Dexterous Manipulation And Servicing By Smallsats, David Akin, Nicholas Limparis, Katherine Mcbryan
Small Satellite Conference
The University of Maryland Space Systems Laboratory is currently developing two flight-ready smallsats to demonstrate and validate the critical technologies for this new class of smallsat servicing system. The Dynamic FLight MAnipulation EXperiment (DYMAFLEX) , supported by the U. S. Air Force University Nanosat Program, is a smallsat incorporating a four degree-of-freedom high-performance manipulator and a fully maneuvering spacecraft bus, including a cold-gas reaction control system. Unlike past manipulator-equipped spacecraft such as ETS-VII or Orbital Express, the DYMAFLEX manipulator inertia (depending on payload) equals or exceeds that of the spacecraft bus, resulting in significant base reaction dynamics in response to …

‘Charybdis’ – The Next Generation In Ocean Colour And Biogeochemical Remote Sensing, Christopher Lowe, Malcom Macdonald, Steve Greenland, David Mckee
Small Satellite Conference
Within the field of Space-based Maritime observation, there exists an opportunity in the form of high spatial, high temporal resolution multi-spectral imaging to map coastal and inland waterway colour and biogeochemistry. Information provided would help environmental agencies and the scientific community to better understand patterns and evolution of ecological systems, sediment suspension in river estuaries and the effects of anthropogenic processes on our water systems. In addition, monitoring of these colour patterns with respect to the well understood tidal sequence would provide significant benefits to our understanding of the way in which tidal forcing affects ocean colour. This paper describes …

A Comparison Of Methods For Measuring Co2 And O2, Jake Nelson
A Comparison Of Methods For Measuring Co2 And O2, Jake Nelson
Techniques and Instruments
Understanding the dynamics of respiratory gasses gives critical insight into the metabolic processes of a biological system. An efficient and effective means of measuring respiration is essential to understanding aspects of the biosphere. Many methods have been developed for measuring changes in CO2 and O2, both as integrated systems and as individual components. Many experiments use an alkali trap with subsequent titration as an inexpensive method for CO2 measurement. Haney et al. (2008) compared the titration method against infrared gas analysis (IRGA) and found them to be highly correlated, with r2=0.95. The use of …

Testing A Pyroclimatic Hypothesis On The Mexico-United States Border, Peter Z. Fule, Larissa L. Yocom Kent, Citlali Cortes Montano, Donald A. Falk, Julian Cerano, Jose Villanueva-Diaz
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
The “pyroclimatic hypothesis” proposed by F. Biondi and colleagues provides a basis for testable expectations about climatic and other controls of fire regimes. This hypothesis asserts an a priori relationship between the occurrence of widespread fire and values of a relevant climatic index. Such a hypothesis provides the basis for predicting spatial and temporal patterns of fire occurrence based on climatic control. Forests near the Mexico–United States border offer a place to test the relative influence of climatic and other controls in mountain ranges that are ecologically similar and subject to broadly similar top-down climatic influence, but with differing cultural …
