USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications
The Reno Atmospheric Mercury Intercomparison Experiment (RAMIX) was carried out from 22 August to 16 September, 2011 in Reno, NV to evaluate the performance of new and existing methods to measure atmospheric mercury (Hg). Measurements were made using a common sampling manifold to which controlled concentrations of Hg species, including gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and HgBr2 (a surrogate gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) compound), and potential interferents were added. We present an analysis of Hg measurements made using the University of Washington’s Detector for Oxidized Hg Species (DOHGS), focusing on tests of GEM and HgBr2 spike recovery, the potential for interference …

Teacher Design Using Online Learning Resources: A Comparative Case Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers, Mimi Recker
Teacher Design Using Online Learning Resources: A Comparative Case Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers, Mimi Recker
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Using a comparative case study design, this paper explores the impacts of a technology-related professional development (TTPD) design aimed at helping science and mathematics teachers design classroom activities using the wealth of resources available on the Internet. Using the lens of curricular adaption and the notion of teachers’ varying pedagogical design capacity, we analyzed the experiences of four teachers in terms of the kinds of instructional activities teachers designed, how these were supported with online resources, and teachers’ perceptions of impacts on student learning. Findings suggested that participants used a variety of personally relevant design strategies when applying TTPD concepts …

Articles
Erosion rates of overland flow on rangelands tend to be relatively low, but under certain conditions where flow is concentrated, soil loss can be significant. Therefore, a rangeland site can be highly vulnerable to soil erosion where overland flow is likely to concentrate and exert high shear stress on soil grains. This concept is commonly applied in cropland and wildland soil erosion modeling using predictions of flow effective shear stress (shear stress applied on soil grains). However, historical approaches to partition shear stress in erosion models are computationally complex and require extensive parameterization. Furthermore, most models are not capable of …

Disclosing Extra-Dyadic Involvement (Edi): Understanding Attitudes, Subjective Norms, And Perceived Behavioral Control, Ryan B. Seedall, Austin Houghtaling, Erica J. Wilkins
Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications
Extra-dyadic involvement (EDI) is a complex issue that affects many individuals, couples, and families. One important, relatively unexplored issue concerns the disclosure of EDI. Despite some scholarly discourse on whether disclosure should be facilitated in a therapeutic context (e.g., Butler et al. in J Marital Fam Ther 35:125–143, 2009; Butler et al. in Am J Fam Ther 36:265–283, 2008), empirical research has not studied the intrapersonal or interpersonal processes related to disclosure. In this study, we explored potential factors involved in the decision to disclose EDI by looking at the relationships among attitudes towards EDI (in terms of perceived justifications …

A Well Designed Goat Grazing Plan Can Reduce Noxious Weeds, Sterling Banks
All Current Publications
Goat grazing can be an effective tool in reducing noxious weeds, if the right grazing plan is designed and implemented. Areas where herbicides are not an option or limited, goat grazing can reduce noxious weeds by reducing seed production and plant growth.

From August 22 to September 16, 2012, atmospheric mercury (Hg) was measured from a common manifold in the field during the Reno Atmospheric Mercury Intercomparison eXperiment. Data were collected using Tekran systems, laser induced fluorescence, and evolving new methods. The latter included the University of Washington-Detector for Oxidized Mercury, the University of Houston Mercury instrument, and a filter-based system under development by the University of Nevada-Reno. Good transmission of total Hg was found for the manifold. However, despite application of standard protocols and rigorous quality control, systematic differences in operationally defined forms of Hg were measured by the sampling systems. …

Genetic And Physiological Responses Of Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis To Hydrogen Peroxide Stress, T. S. Oberg, Robert E. Ward, J. L. Steele, Jeff Broadbent
Genetic And Physiological Responses Of Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis To Hydrogen Peroxide Stress, T. S. Oberg, Robert E. Ward, J. L. Steele, Jeff Broadbent
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
Consumer interest in probiotic bifidobacteria is increasing, but industry efforts to secure high cell viability in foods is determined by these anaerobes’ sensitivity to oxidative stress. To address this limitation, we investigated genetic and physiological responses of two fully sequenced Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis strains, BL-04 and DSM 10140, to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) stress. Although the genome sequences for these strains are highly clonal, prior work showed they differ in both intrinsic and inducible H2O2 resistance. Transcriptome analysis of early stationary phase cells exposed to a sub-lethal H2O2 concentration detected …
A Novel Sodium Channel In The Mammalian Taste System, Melissa N. Fillmore
A Novel Sodium Channel In The Mammalian Taste System, Melissa N. Fillmore
Biology Posters
Salty taste, one of the five taste qualities recognized in the mammalian peripheral gustatory system is thought to be mediated by an ion channel receptor. The epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, is thought to be the channel for salt taste transduction. ENaC is crucial in regulating salt reabsorption, helps control overall salt and water homeostasis in an organism, and contributes to blood pressure. While ENaC plays an important role in salt taste perception, it is responsible for only part of the total sodium transduction pathway in humans, suggesting that there may be another component in the salt transduction mechanism. We have …
Forest Development And Carbon Dynamics After Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks, E. Matthew Hansen
Forest Development And Carbon Dynamics After Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreaks, E. Matthew Hansen
The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography
Mountain pine beetles periodically infest pine forests in western North America, killing many or most overstory pine stems. The surviving secondary stand structure, along with recruited seedlings, will form the future canopy. Thus, even-aged pine stands become multiaged and multistoried. The species composition of affected stands will depend on the presence of nonpines and outbreak severity, among other factors, and can range from continued dominance by pines to hastened conversion to more shade-tolerant species. The loss of mature host trees results in reductions of ecosystem carbon productivity. The surviving and recruited stems, however, grow more quickly in response to the …

The Legacy Of Destructive Snow Goose Foraging On Supratidal Marsh Habitat In The Hudson Bay Lowlands, David N. Koons
The Legacy Of Destructive Snow Goose Foraging On Supratidal Marsh Habitat In The Hudson Bay Lowlands, David N. Koons
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Ecological succession and climate change are pushing tundra as well as Arctic and subarctic lowland plant communities toward increased woody vegetation cover. However, areas along the Hudson Bay Lowlands that are over-grazed by hyper-abundant lesser snow geese are experiencing drastic losses of grass, sedge, and woody cover. We assessed long-term changes in proportional ground cover and habitat patch characteristic at a subartic supratidal marsh that was largely vacated by breeding snow geese over a decade ago. We found no evidence of habitat recovery, Rather, snow geese leave a legacy on the land that propagates degradation of habitat recovery. Rather, snow …
