Aspen suckers from 1-m-long root cuttings survived and grew better than those from 12.5-cm-long cuttings. Sucker survival and growth were also inversely related to parent root diameter. Discusses the practical implications for aspen management.

To evaluate the effectiveness of overland flow treatment in upgrading secondary wastewater lagoon effluent, three 15 x 36 m plots on a 2.5 percent slope were constructed and sown for a high density vegetative cover using Reed Canary grass. Wastewater was applied to the upper end of each plot at rates of 7.5, 15, and 22.5 cm/wk. Results from the overland flow system investigation were compared with similar data obtained the preceding year from an existing slow rate land application system on an adjacent site. The general goal of this study was to develop a functional model of the sociological and related hydrologic elements in flood control decision-making. Conceptual system models were developed for the hydrologic system and for the sociological system. The sociological variables were identified as they related to the steps in the process of the model. Following the conceptual decision process model the social elements of the model were calibrated from data obtained from field studies and mathematical equations were developed and tested. Mirid Fauna Associated With Old-Field Goldenrods (Solidago: Compositae) In Ithaca, N.Y., Frank J. Messina

The mirid fauna associated with oldfield goldenrods (Solidago spp.) was sampled from May 10-Oct. 25, 1977 in Ithaca, New York USA . Species (23) belonging to 16 genera were recorded; 97% of all individuals (1099) belong to 6 genera (Lygus, Slaterocoris, Lopidea, Plagiognathus, Adelphocoris and Polymerus). The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris, was the most common species. The dominant mirids can be divided into 2 fairly distinct guilds, L. lineolaris, 2 Plagiognathus spp. and A. rapidus feeding primarily on goldenrod flowers and 3 Slaterocoris spp., Lopidea media and Polymerus venaticus feeding on the immature foliage. Previous work at Utah State University determined minimum levels of different nutrients that would produce the maximum rate of gain or gain/feed ratio by feeding graded levels of the nutrients. Fitting broken lines to the data from work with one nutrient tended to underestimate the minimum requirement for that nutrient. It appeared that the response was not linear up to the level required to give maximum performance as the "broken line" approach to estimating the requirement assumes. The purpose of the research was to ascertain the effect of guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate on hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity in laboratory female rats, a free-living population of male and female house sparrows, and bovine pineal glands obtained from the abbatoir, in vitro. The data showed that guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate significantly inhibited hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity in all three species, but the bovine pineal preparation was the least sensitive. From these data, it appears that guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate acts as a second messenger to the neurotransmitter norepinephrine for the control of hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity as follows: Darkness effects the release …

Recent studies suggest problems resulting from using essentially linear ordination techniques on non-linear ecological data. A new non-linear method, termed polynomial ordination, was developed in response to these problems. Its effectiveness was compared to that of two standard techniques, Bray-Curtis ordination and principal components analysis, by testing with both simulated and field data. The original species axes are resolved into their principal components. If significant curvilinear relationships between principal components are present, new axes are defined along these curves. The demography of the sagebrush defoliator, Aroga websteri Clarke, and its impact on the productivity of Artemisia tridentata were studied during 1974 and 1975. UDPGA fortified rat liver homogenates were incubated with various concentrations of the pineal polypeptide, arginine vasotocin (AVT), and testosterone-4-14C to determine if AVT influenced the rate at which the ∆4-3-ketosteroid molecule was inactivated by the liver. The purpose of this investigation was to examine different aspects of the social tendency among three age classes of House Sparrows (adults, first-year, and juvenals). The social preferences of these birds were studied in relation to: (1) different flock sizes of conspecifics and nonconspecifics; (2) the sexes of conspecifics; (3) the playback of conspecific vocalizations in the presence of flocks of conspecifics; and (4) abstract models displaying configurations considered relevant from House Sparrow plumage patterns of either sex. Oxidative respiration and morphological changes in soybean mitochondria isolated from etiolated hypocotyls were investigated, Aliquots from mitochondria in defined respiratory states were negatively stained with isotonic aqueous ammonium molybdate, pH 7.2. Similar experiments were conducted with mitochondria incubated for three minutes in an assay medium containing either 1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 x 10-2 M KCl or KF prior to the addition of either L-malate or succinate. Neither KCl nor KF affected the biochemical integrity of mitochondria judged on their ability to reduce both ADP/0 and respiratory control ratios, even though KF had a definite inhibitory effect on the rate of …

The effect of nitrogen intake, nitrogen source, calorie intake, body weight, adaptation time, research group and sex on the nitrogen balance of human adults was investigated. Data from studies reported in the literature were combined and analyzed statistically by multiple regression techniques. Analyses were made separately for six sources of nitrogen: egg, beef, rice, corn, wheat and wheat gluten.

Nitrogen intake, caloric intake and body weight exerted significant effects on nitrogen balance (5% level of confidence) for six, three and two of the six nitrogen sources, respectively. Other variables were not significant at the 5% level. Although differences were not …
