The Role Of The Vessels In The Growth Plate: Morphological Examination, K. Draenert, Y. Draenert Aug 1984

The Role Of The Vessels In The Growth Plate: Morphological Examination, K. Draenert, Y. Draenert

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Combined methods of light microscopy to present ossification zones by means of fluorochrome dyes make it possible to explain the contradicting presentations of the vascular system of the growth plate in the literature. The vascular system was casted with methacrylates which can be presented in the scanning electron microscope 3-dimensionally together with the trabeculae as a result of their resistance in the electron beam.

The 3-dimensional presentation in the electron microscope allows a clear distinction between the various vascular sections in the arterial flow system. In the microcorrosion casts the vessels of the epiphyseal side of the growth plate can …

Nutritional Ecology Of The Northern Pocket Gopher: A Study Of Nitrogen Balance, Miki M. Stuebe May 1984

Nutritional Ecology Of The Northern Pocket Gopher: A Study Of Nitrogen Balance, Miki M. Stuebe

Biology

The northern pocket gopher, Thomomys talpoides, is probably not able to maintain nitrogen (N) balance in winter in northern Utah if it eats only belowground plant material typical of that found in the caches it makes. Gophers burrowing 10 h/day would meet about 81% of their daily N requirement on such a diet, which has a true N digestibility of 49.0%, and a biological value of 90.6%. However, gophers could easily meet N requirements in winter by consuming material only slightly higher in N than cached material. High-N material (both plant and animal matter) is probably available to most …

The Effects Of Altered Prey Availability And Shrub Architecture On Spider Community Parameters: A Field Experiment In A Shrub-Steppe Ecosystem, Kathryn Wing May 1984

The Effects Of Altered Prey Availability And Shrub Architecture On Spider Community Parameters: A Field Experiment In A Shrub-Steppe Ecosystem, Kathryn Wing

Biology

The effects of altered prey availability and shrub architecture on spider community parameters were studied in a field experiment in northeastern Utah. Treatments of 2 states of foliage density--"normal" and tied (= high density)--and 2 states of insect attractant-- control and baited--were applied to big sage shrubs (Artemisia tridentata) using a factorial experimental design. Temperature and humidity were not significantly different between the 2 types of shrub architecture. The species array and abundance of shrub insects were not significantly altered by the foliage density treatment. Shrubs with insect attractant had significantly larger insects (as measured by body length) …

Isozyme Variation Among Geographic Populations Of The Alfalfa Weevil, Hypera Postica (Gyllenhal), In Utah, John M. Stutz

Biology

The objectives of this study were to estimate the amount of genetic variation present among populations of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and to determine the amount of divergence between these populations. The enzyme products of 25 loci (acid phosphatase, alcohol dehydrogenase-2, alcohol dehydrogenase-3, amylase-1, amylase-2, aldehyde oxidase, esterase-1, esterase-2, esterase-3, fumarase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamate-oxaloacetate-transaminase, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase-1, malate dehydrogenase-2, malate dehydrogenase-3, malate dehydrogenase-4, malic enzyme, superoxide dismutase, tyrosinase-1, tyrosinase-2, tyrosinase-3, xanthine dehydrogenase) were examined using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for four Utah alfalfa weevil populations; two from the north (Logan and Payson) …

The Distribution Of Sialic Acid In Selected Tissues And Body Fluids During The Female Reproductive Cycle, Donald Reed Jensen May 1984

The Distribution Of Sialic Acid In Selected Tissues And Body Fluids During The Female Reproductive Cycle, Donald Reed Jensen

Biology

An intriguing and dynamic chapter in the history of biochemical research concerns the acylated derivatives of neuraminic acid, the so-called "sialic acids." These substances have been found to occur naturally as constituents of a wide variety of mucoproteins, mucolipids, and related compounds. Because of their vast distribution throughout the animal kingdom, considerable attention has been focused on the chemical, physical, and biological properties of these acids. Attendant studies have shown the functional integrity of certain of the protein and lipid conjugates to be dependent on the presence of sialic acid residues, thereby assigning physiological importance to the acylated derivatives of …

Xylorhiza Glabriuscula Var. Linearifolia (Asteraceae - Astereae): Stabilized Hybrid Derivative Or Evolutionary Intermediate?, Tamalyn Stockton May 1984

Xylorhiza Glabriuscula Var. Linearifolia (Asteraceae - Astereae): Stabilized Hybrid Derivative Or Evolutionary Intermediate?, Tamalyn Stockton

Biology

Morphological, ecological, flavonoid, and cytological studies were conducted to determine the origin of Xylorhiza glabriuscula var. linearifolia. These data strongly suggest that X. glabriuscula var. linearifolia (2n = 12, 24) has a hybrid origin, the putative parental taxa being X. glabriuscula var. glabriuscula (2n = 12) and X. tortifolia var. imberbis (2n = 12). Variety linearifolia is intermediate to the latter taxa morphologically and ecologically. In addition, it has a partially additive profile of the flavonoids found in the parental taxa. All the major types of flavonoids found in the parental taxa are represented in variety linearifolia, but it …

A Comparison Of The Desiccation Resistances Of Three Species Of Crab Spiders Occuring Sympatrically In Northern Utah, Eric James Zurcher May 1984

A Comparison Of The Desiccation Resistances Of Three Species Of Crab Spiders Occuring Sympatrically In Northern Utah, Eric James Zurcher

Biology

Respiration rates, water contents, water loss rates, and abilities to withstand water loss were assessed at 15, 25, and 35 C for adults of three species of crab spiders occuring sympatrically on shrub-steppe vegetation in northern Utah. The three species, Misumenops lepidus (Thorell), Xysticus cunctator (Thorell), and Philodromus histrio (Latreille), differ in their apparent seasonal distributions, with M. lepidus being collected most frequently in spring and fall, X. cunctator appearing most frequently in summer, and P. histrio occuring in all seasons. Rates of oxygen consumption paralleled casual observations of the general rates of activities of these spiders. Hence the generally …

Assessment Of Esterases Variation In Different Strains Of Spotted Alfalfa Aphid Therioaphis Maculata (Buckton) (Homoptera:Aphididae), With Special Reference To Endosulfan Susceptibility And Synergism, Nazar Nowman Hama May 1984

Assessment Of Esterases Variation In Different Strains Of Spotted Alfalfa Aphid Therioaphis Maculata (Buckton) (Homoptera:Aphididae), With Special Reference To Endosulfan Susceptibility And Synergism, Nazar Nowman Hama

Biology

Endosulfan susceptibility and synergism with DEF (S.S.S-tributylphosphorotrithioate) and PB (piperonyl butoxide) for different strains of adult apterous spotted alfalfa aphids were examined in addition to evaluating the correlation between esterases and the aphid's tolerance or resistance to endosulfan. Unsynergized endosulfan LC50 values for populations of spotted alfalfa aphids from near Delta, Utah, Nampa, Idaho or Nyssa, Oregon, were 57.56, 37.51 and 45.60 µg/vial, respectively, while pretreatment with DEF reduced the LC50 values to 3.32, 3.2 and 4.73 µg/vial respectively. PB had either little synergistic or antagonistic effects on the endosulfan toxicity. Senergistic data suggested the dominance of esterases as detoxifying …

Aerosol Stability Of Reovirus, Alan Jeff Mohr

Biology

Reoviruses type 1 Lang, type 2 Jones and type 3 Dearing were aerosolized with a Collison nebulizer and aged for two and a half hours in an environmentally controlled Dynamic Aerosol Toroid to determine reovirus inactivation rates. Results from this study were used to evaluate reoviruses as indicators of viral aerosol pollution. Reovirus viability was determined at three temperatures (2°C, 14°C and 27°C) and four relative humidities [(RH) 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% RH]. After the aging period potentially infectious viruses (PIV), those with a complete outer capsid, were treated with trypsin and transformed into infectious virus (IV) with an …

An Electron Microscopic Study Of The Gill Chamber Of A Dragonfly Nymph (Odonata:Anisoptera), Patricia Bohm Trostle May 1984

An Electron Microscopic Study Of The Gill Chamber Of A Dragonfly Nymph (Odonata:Anisoptera), Patricia Bohm Trostle

Biology

The respiratory chamber of the dragonfly nymph, Aeshna multicolor, was studied by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Transmission electron micrographs enable several cellular types, includig two epithelial types, to be distinguished within the individual gill fold. Epithelial cells located basally on the gill fold show features of an osmoregulatory tissue. Cuticle limiting these cells is thinner than-that of typical epithelium, the plasmalemmae are infolded enclosing numerous mitochondria, and a system of extracellular channels is located basally with mitochondria and glycogen seen in the basal cellular outfoldings. Tracheoles are rare. Epithelial cells more distally placed are typical of …

Arthropod Faunas Of Reseeded Rangelands: Effects Of Vegetation Structure, Steve M. Spangler May 1984

Arthropod Faunas Of Reseeded Rangelands: Effects Of Vegetation Structure, Steve M. Spangler

Biology

Arthropod faunas in different types of reseeded rangeland vegetation were studied in 1980 and 1981, with an emphasis on sap-feeders and predators. Manipulations of grass density and sagebrush presence/absence were performed in 1981 to assess the relative effects of these 2 factors in producing the observed arthropod faunas. Major sap-feeders of crested wheatgrass (Ayropyron cristatum L.) were Irbisia brachycera (Uhler) and Conostethus americanus (Knight) (Miridae), and Oikraneura carneola (Stal) (Cicadellidae). The major sap-feeder of tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum panticum (Podp.) Barkworth & Dewey) was Laccocera obesa Van Duzee (Delphacidae). I. brachycera, C. americanus, and L. obesa showed population patterns related to …

Genetic Manipulation Of Rhodopseudomonas Sphaeroides For Lactose Utilization, Brian Stevenson May 1984

Genetic Manipulation Of Rhodopseudomonas Sphaeroides For Lactose Utilization, Brian Stevenson

Biology

The purpose of this work was to construct a DNA vector containing the Escherichia coli lactose operon and devise a method for the subsequent introduction into Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides. Expertise in methods for the purification and manipulation of DNA was developed and improvements upon methods were devised. PRSF 1010 proved to be a poor cloning vector due to a lack of selectable resistance markers and useable restriction sites. The lac operon was cloned into pBR 325 using either HindIII or BamHI restriction endonucleases. Restriction maps of the resulting plasmids were constructed. Attempts to transform R. sphaeroides with plasmid DNA by established …

Pedigree Analysis Of The Gardner Syndrome And Other Polypoid Diseases, Scott Ray Woodward

Biology

The purpose of this study was to identify persons at risk for polypoid disease by pedigree and cell culture analysis. A new investigation of the solitary polyp family, Kindred 133 was completed and familial polyposis families, Kindreds 353 and 409, were added to ongoing investigations of Gardner syndrome and familial polyposis coli. Approximatly 130 cell cultures were established from patients at risk and their unaffected sibs. Chromosome analysis showed high levels of random karyotype instability. Sister chromatid exchange analysis demonstrated no statistical difference between affected and unaffected patients in response to challenge by mitomycin-C. Cell cycle analysis by flow cytometric …

Development And Evaluation Of Enzyme Labeled Immunosorbent Assays Using Acetylcholinesterase And Its Application To The Study Of Murine Rotaviral Infection Of Infant Mice, Edwin D. Neas May 1984

Development And Evaluation Of Enzyme Labeled Immunosorbent Assays Using Acetylcholinesterase And Its Application To The Study Of Murine Rotaviral Infection Of Infant Mice, Edwin D. Neas

Biology

An enzyme labeled immunosorbent assay (ELISA) which uses the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AchE) as the immunoreactant label has been developed. The AchE was detected by a reaction between the hydrolysed substrate acetylthiocholine (AchS) and 5:5-dithiobis-2-nitrobenzoate ion. This reaction was spectrophotometrically followed at a wavelength of 405 nm. The exposed thiol group will also react with a thiol-specific fluorochrome, monobromobimane, to produce fluorescence. AchE was conjugated to immunoglobulin using glutaraldehyde without loss of enzyme or antibody activity. The AchE-ELISA was shown to be equal in activity and sensitivity to two widely used commercial ELISA's at an 8-fold increase in the dilution of …

The Effect Of Reproductive Phase And Hormone Treatment On Receptor Sites For Reproductive Hormones In The Ewe, Jane R. Mole May 1984

The Effect Of Reproductive Phase And Hormone Treatment On Receptor Sites For Reproductive Hormones In The Ewe, Jane R. Mole

Biology

Groups of at least six ewes each during the estrous and anestrous seasons were estrus synchronized using progesterone implants and superovulated using follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) or pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG), or left as nonsuperovulated controls. Ewes were sacrificed 30 h after removal of implants. The hypothalamus, adenohypophysis and ovaries were removed and frozen in liquid nitrogen. Frozen sections of all tissues were incubated with radiolabeled hormones to determine location and quantity of receptor sites. Slides were dipped in autoradiography emulsion and allowed to self expose 10 days before they were developed and stained. Slides were then examined using …

Eeg And Evoked Potential Measured Of Age And Sex Differences In Central Nervous System Processing, Judith Ann La Marche

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Age and gender differences in CNS information processing were investigated with EEG measures of power spectral analysis and cortical coupling, and evoked potential measures of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs), visual evoked potentials (VEPs), pattern reversal evoked potentials (PREPs), and P300 evoked potentials. Eighty normal volunteers comprised four subgroups of 20 subjects: young females and young males (25-35 years); old females and old males (55-70 years).

Trends were generally consistent across evoked potential measures: women and young people produced faster latency responses; females and oldsters produced larger amplitude responses. Old age was associated with reduced variability of electrophysiological responding across …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of grandfather's relationships with his adult child and their oldest child. A questionnaire was used to obtain demographic data, determine some personality and interaction patterns that can be observed as the male adult develops in the parent and grandparent roles, and examine how specific variables affect grandfather relationships and behavior. Data were gathered from 165 Utah State University students and their spouses, of which over 75% belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The results support good intergenerational relationships. Proximity of grandfather and extended family members was …

Resource Acquisition In The Presence Of A Novel Stimulus By Coyotes Of Different Social Rank, Warren E. Johnson May 1984

Resource Acquisition In The Presence Of A Novel Stimulus By Coyotes Of Different Social Rank, Warren E. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the acquisition of food by hand-reared coyotes, Canis latrans, of different social rank in a familiar area with and without novel objects (safe and potentially unsafe conditions). The first objective was to test the hypothesis that dominant animals are more hesitant than subordinates in approaching food in the presence of a novel stimulus. The results were that dominant pups usually were the first to feed in the absence of novel stimulus, and subordinate pups were the first to feed when novel objects were present. The second objective was to see if the behavior of subordinates in …
