Biofilm Mediated Calculus Formation In The Urinary Tract, Robert J. C. Mclean, David J. Stickler, J. Curtis Nickel Jan 1996

Biofilm Mediated Calculus Formation In The Urinary Tract, Robert J. C. Mclean, David J. Stickler, J. Curtis Nickel

Cells and Materials

Mineralization and subsequent calculus formation is a common complication of biofilm infections. In the urinary tract, these infected calculi often arise from infections by urease-producing bacteria. Ammonia, liberated by bacterial urease activity, increases urine pH, resulting in the precipitation of Ca and Mg as carbonateapatite {Ca10(PO4,CO3)6(OH,CO3)2} and struvite (NH4MgP04·6H2O). These minerals become entrapped in the organic matrix which surrounds the infecting organisms and ultimately grow into mature calculi. When the causative organisms grow on urinary catheters and stents, the resulting mineralization can …

In Vitro Degradation Of Poly (Dl-Lactide-Ε-Caprolactone) Nerve Guides, M. F. Meek, W. F. A. Dunnen, I. Stokroos, A. J. Pennings, P. H. Robinson, J. M. Schakenraad

Cells and Materials

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro degradation of a poly (DL-lactide-ε-caprolactone) nerve guide with an initial molecular weight (Mw) of 1.1 x 106 kg/kmol in phosphate buffer (pH = 7.4), after different time intervals, ranging from 7-98 days. We evaluated the changes in Mw, dry and wet volume, dry and wet mass and pH of the buffer. In addition, cryo scanning electron microscopical (cryo SEM) evaluation of the degrading nerve guides was carried out to evaluate the effect of the degradation on the surface of the nerve guide.

The degradation …

Perturbations Of Periosteel Bone During Healing: Effect Of Non-Weight Bearing, Helen E. Gruber, Mary E. Kirchen, John R. Sweeney, William E. Anderson, G. June Marshall Jan 1996

Perturbations Of Periosteel Bone During Healing: Effect Of Non-Weight Bearing, Helen E. Gruber, Mary E. Kirchen, John R. Sweeney, William E. Anderson, G. June Marshall

Cells and Materials

Weight bearing (WB) is an important factor influencing bone remodelling. The present study evaluates the effects of weight bearing and non-weight bearing (S) (achieved by tail suspension and hindlimb elevation) on the healing of a fibular osteotomy in adult male rats. After 9, 18 or 36 days under WB or S conditions, periosteum near the callus formed at the osteotomy site was compared to periosteum of the contralateral fibula (which did not receive an osteotomy) or to periosteum of fibula of control animals which did not receive an osteotomy. Data show that periosteal bone healing is sensitive to alterations in …

A Composite Biomaterial: Poly 2 (Hydropoxyethyl) Methacrylate / Alkaline Phosphatase Initiates Mineralization In Vitro, R. Filmon, D. Chappard, J. P. Monthéard, M. F. Baslé Jan 1996

A Composite Biomaterial: Poly 2 (Hydropoxyethyl) Methacrylate / Alkaline Phosphatase Initiates Mineralization In Vitro, R. Filmon, D. Chappard, J. P. Monthéard, M. F. Baslé

Cells and Materials

Bone substitutes are nowadays largely used in orthopedic surgery but they lack osteoinductive properties. Poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) has numerous biomedical applications. Alkaline phosphatase (AlkP), an ectoenzyme elaborated by osteoblasts, initiates bone mineralization by hydrolyzing organic phosphates before calcium-phosphorus deposition. We have immobilized AlkP in pHEMA in a copolymerization technic. Histochemical study revealed that AlkP has retained its biological activity . Image analysis of sections using a tessellation method showed a lognormal distribution of the area of tessels around AlkP particles thus confirming an homogeneous distribution of the enzyme in the polymer. Pellets of pHEMA and pHEMA + AlkP were …

Validation Of Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry As A Method To Standardize Backscattered Electron Images Of Bone, E. G. Vajda, R. D. Bloebaum, J. G. Skedros Jan 1996

Validation Of Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry As A Method To Standardize Backscattered Electron Images Of Bone, E. G. Vajda, R. D. Bloebaum, J. G. Skedros

Cells and Materials

The use of backscattered electron (BSE) imaging as a tool for the qualitative measurement of mineral content in bone has been well documented. The challenge still remains to develop BSE imaging as a tool for quantitative mineral content analysis in bone. The limiting factor has been the ability to standardize the BSE signal within and between laboratories. Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX) has been proposed as a method to standardize the BSE operating environment. The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between EDX-determined wt.% Ca measurements and BSE graylevels. A comparison with traditional ash content measurements will …

The Effect Of Vitronectin And Other Extracellular Matrix Molecules On Endothelial Expansion And Plasminogen Activation, P. Anne Underwood, Penny A. Bean Jan 1996

The Effect Of Vitronectin And Other Extracellular Matrix Molecules On Endothelial Expansion And Plasminogen Activation, P. Anne Underwood, Penny A. Bean

Cells and Materials

Endothelial recovery following procedures used to alleviate blood vessel occlusion is modulated by the local extracellular matrix upon which it has to migrate and proliferate. This extracellular material is derived from vessel wall cells, and plasma proteins which bind to the exposed surfaces. We have demonstrated that vitronectin adsorbs efficiently to tissue culture polystyrene in competition with other plasma proteins, which suggests that it may adsorb to biomaterial surfaces in vivo. We have compared the adhesion, migration and proliferation of human umbilical artery endothelial cells on surface-coated vitronectin, with other extracellular matrix molecules encountered in this environment, namely fibronectin, …

Douglas-Fir Beetle, Richard F. Schmitz, Kenneth E. Gibson Jan 1996

Douglas-Fir Beetle, Richard F. Schmitz, Kenneth E. Gibson

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

The Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuqae Hopk.) infests and kills Douglas-fir throughout most of its range in western United States British Columbia and Mexico. Occasionally western larch trees are infested when growing among Douglas-fir under attack. Attacks in standing larch are always unsuccessful, while those in freshly felled larch are usually successful and brood emergence is equivalent to that in Douglas-fir. Douglas-fir beetles normally kill small groups of trees, but during outbreaks 100 tree groups are not uncommon (fig. 1). Losses can be devastating during periodic outbreaks, such as four that occurred in western Oregon and Washington from 1950 through 1969, …

Fire-Bgc -- A Mechanistic Ecological Process Model For Simulating Fire Succession On Coniferous Forest Landscapes Of The Northern Rocky Mountains, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

An ecological process model of vegetation dynamics mechanistically simulates long-term stand dynamics on coniferous landscapes of the Northern Rocky Mountains. This model is used to investigate and evaluate cumulative effects of various fire regimes, including prescribed burning and fire exclusion, on the vegetation and fuel complex of a simulation landscape composed of many stands. Detailed documentation of the model FIRE-BGC (a FIRE BioGeoChemical succession model) with complete discussion of all model parameters is followed with results of an application of the FIRE-BGC to a whitebark pine landscape in the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex. Simulation results of several management scenarios are …

Characterization Of Ground And Excited Electronic State Deprotonation Energies Of Systems Containing Double Bonds Using Natural Bond Orbital Analysis, J. K. Badenhoop, Steve Scheiner Jan 1996

Characterization Of Ground And Excited Electronic State Deprotonation Energies Of Systems Containing Double Bonds Using Natural Bond Orbital Analysis, J. K. Badenhoop, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Natural bond orbital analysis is applied to the ground and excited states of a set of neutral, cationic, and anionic doubly bonded species HnC=XHn (X=C, N, O) isoelectronic with ethylene. The character of the excitation is correlated with calculated charge shifts and geometry changes upon relaxation. For these planar molecules, depopulation of the π bond or population of the π∗ antibond causes an out‐of‐plane twist or pyramidalization upon relaxation correlated to the amount of charge shift. These nonplanar distortions generally lower the energy more than changes in bond lengths and angles. Population of a σXH∗ …

The Dynamic Effects Of U.S. Food Aid On Recipient Country Agriculture, Christopher B. Barrett, Sandeep Mohapatra, Donald L. Snyder Jan 1996

The Dynamic Effects Of U.S. Food Aid On Recipient Country Agriculture, Christopher B. Barrett, Sandeep Mohapatra, Donald L. Snyder

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Although food aid may have important medium- to long-tenn effects, there is a glaring absence of empirical research on food aid dynamics. This paper applies structural vector autoregression and dynamic structural equations modeling methods to a panel of production, trade, and food aid data from eighteen countries over the period 1961-95. We find evidence of a J-curve effect of food aid on recipient country commercial food imports, but only modest effects on food production. The implication is that food aid primarily serves donor goals of export market development.

On Some Aspects Of The Management Of A Stochastically Developing Forest, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 1996

On Some Aspects Of The Management Of A Stochastically Developing Forest, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In this paper I focus on some important biological aspects of the forest management problem. I model a stochastically developing forest as a multidimensional, continuous-time Markov chain. Next, I pose three questions concerning the long-run characteristics of a stationary forest, the stochastic process followed by dying species, and the age of an arbitrary species in the forest. I then (a) characterize a stationary forest probabilistically, (b) describe the stochastic process governing the demise of species in this forest, and (c) provide a method for determining the age of an arbitrary species in the forest. Finally, I discuss the forest management …

Pluralism, Science, Ethics, And The Intersecting Spheres Of Social Concerns And Environmentalism, Christopher B. Barrett, Raymond E. Grizzle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds on alternative perspectives offered by the environmental and sustainability traditions to advance a holistic yet practical conceptual model that explicitly integrates social and environmental concerns. Ours is a pluralistic approach founded on synthesis. Employing the economic concept of path dependence, we emphasize that there exist multiple paths society can follow in environmental ethics and policy, but that onc e one has been chosen, implicitly or explicitly, there may be little opportunity to reverse such choices. Hence, the importance of process to the pursuit of social and environmental objectives.

An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou Jan 1996

An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The population of the Ounein Valley in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is at high risk of iodine deficiency. We investigated local children's iodine deficiency and goiterpattems as well as food consumption habits through a household survey. Median urinary iodine content and goiter analysis both reflect moderate iodine deficiency. Total fish consumption has a statistically significant, positive effect on urinary iodine content. Fish consumption, like that of salt, is closely related to market access. Respondents are uniformly unaware of the dietary etiology of goiter. An effective strategy to reduce the high incidence of iodine deficiency disorder among children in …

Simulated Growth And Production Of Endangered Snake River Sockeye Salmon: Assessing Management Strategies For The Nursery Lakes, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Phaedra E. Budy, H. P. Gross

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We examined the potential of employing a series of lake management strategies to enhance production of endangered Snake River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in its historical nursery lakes in central Idaho. We used a combination of limnological sampling, experimentation, and simulation modeling to assess effects of lake fertilization and kokanee reduction on growth and survival of juvenile sockeye salmon. Juvenile sockeye salmon from a broodstock of this endangered species are being introduced into the lakes from 1995 to 1998. Results of our analyses indicated that several lakes were suitable for receiving broodstock progeny. Field experimentation and simulation modeling indicated that …

Comparison Of The Aquatic Ecology Of Side-Canyons And The Main Channel Of Lake Powell, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Kirsten L. Gallo Jan 1996

Comparison Of The Aquatic Ecology Of Side-Canyons And The Main Channel Of Lake Powell, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Kirsten L. Gallo

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

From 18-21 April 1996, students in a Utah State University class (Aquatic Ecology Laboratory; FW 560) measured limnological and fisheries characteristics in two side canyons (Halls Creek Bay and Moki Canyon) and the main channel of Lake Powell. Inclement weather precluded sampling of two other side canyons. Most of the sub-projects, directed by indiVIdual students, addressed the following two hypotheses: (1) productivity gradients existed from the inflows of the side canyons toward the main channel and; (2) productivity was higher in the side canyons than in the main channel of the lake. In most cases, parameters were measured at 3-5 …
