"On Down The Road" An Intergenerational Fathering Experience, Jeffery G. Chapman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fathering has been studied with renewed interest by scholars seeking to understand the unique effects and contributions fathers have in the lives of children. Father involvement has been measured by tracking fathers· engagement with. accessibility to. and responsibility for their children during childhood and adolescence. Generative fathering theorists have proposed that fathering and fatherhood are better understood by expansion of the dimensions of father involvement. Generative fathering research has found that father-child relationships are imbued with meaning across the life cycle. The meaning of generative fathering was explored in this study across four generations of fathers. all from one extended …

A Multilevel Analysis Of Young Adult Migration, 1980-1998, Ji-Youn Lee May 2002

A Multilevel Analysis Of Young Adult Migration, 1980-1998, Ji-Youn Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the propensity to migrate the destination choices of young adults, and the importance of individual, household, and community characteristics in these migration choices. Using cohort data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth79 from 1980 to 1998, this study specifies the set of individual-, household-, and community-level of determinants on migration and then incorporates these variables in multivariate analyses to test their direct and relative effects on the migratory behavior of young adult groups. A Cox proportional hazard analysis suggests that among three levels of factors, individual characteristics are the most …

Fear Of Crime And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement Among American Youth, Bruce K. Bayley May 2002

Fear Of Crime And Perceptions Of Law Enforcement Among American Youth, Bruce K. Bayley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fear of crime and the public's satisfaction with police has been a focus of criminologists for a number of years. Most studies, however, have focused on the general population as a whole. What is not known is how fearful American youth are of the crime in their neighborhoods and how they perceive those in law enforcement. The purpose of this study was to explore this subgroup of the population and to begin the investigation of youths' fear of crime and their perceptions of law enforcement.

Using a national sample of 1,897 youth ages 16-25 collected from 12 cities throughout the …

The Educational Pipelinie For Women In Biology: No Longer Leaking?, Louise Luckenbill-Edds Jan 2002

The Educational Pipelinie For Women In Biology: No Longer Leaking?, Louise Luckenbill-Edds

ADVANCE Library Collection

Describing the past 30 years of progress toward gender equity in science, one observer wrote: "Although optimistic about future prospects, I must also point out some daunting toads and serpents lurking in the gardens of science. These challenge the rising generation of young scientists to be no less intrepid [that past activists who catalyzed change]" (Herschbach 1999, p. 66). The failure of the sciences to attract and retain women has meant a loss of diversity, as well as a loss of talent and creativity, that impoverishes research viewpoints and limits effective communication of science with diverse sectors of society.

Planning For Agriculture In Wisconsin: A Guide Forcommunities, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this guide is to provide you with basic information to help Wisconsin’s rural communities prepare to plan for agriculture. The guide was developed in response to the Comprehensive Planning Law passed under the 1999-2001 Wisconsin State Biennial Budget. This law requires that by January 1, 2010, all programs, actions, and decisions affecting land use must be consistent with the locally adopted comprehensive plan in order for the community to continue making land use related decisions. The law applies to cities, villages, towns, counties, and regional planning commissions.

Leave The Dishes In The Sink: Adventures Of An Activist In Conservative Utah, Alison Comish Thorne Jan 2002

Leave The Dishes In The Sink: Adventures Of An Activist In Conservative Utah, Alison Comish Thorne

All USU Press Publications

Alison Thorne provides a small-town Utah perspective on the progressive social movements that in the mid to late twentieth century dramatically affected American society. A born activist, Thorne has fought for women's rights, educational reform in public schools and universities, the environment, peace, and the war on poverty. Her efforts have been all the more challenging because of the conservative social and cultural environment in which she has undertaken them. Yet, Thorne, who has deep personal and familial roots in the politically conservative and predominantly Mormon culture of Utah and much of the West, has worked well with people with …

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc Jan 2002

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc

All USU Press Publications

From the Introduction: "Contemporary Composition is still inflected by the epistemic turn taken in the 1980s, convincing me that we need to remember what we've forgotten—namely, how impassioned resolves and thrilling discoveries were abandoned and why. I'd like to retrace the road not taken in Composition Studies, to salvage what can still be recovered... I want to inspect the wreckage, in order to show what was the promise of the Happenings for Composition, as well as the huge gray longueur of its pale replacement, Eighties Composition. In so doing, I hope to begin a reconfiguration of our field's pre- and …

When Talk Is Not Cheap: Substantive Penance And Expressions Of Intent In Rebuilding Cooperation, William P. Bottom, Kevin Gibson, Steven E. Daniels, J. Keith Murnighan Jan 2002

When Talk Is Not Cheap: Substantive Penance And Expressions Of Intent In Rebuilding Cooperation, William P. Bottom, Kevin Gibson, Steven E. Daniels, J. Keith Murnighan

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Interpersonal relationships can be fragile. The mere perception of opportunistic behavior can lead to a breakdown in cooperation. Once damaged, the question then arises as to whether and how cooperation might be restored. Noncooperative game theory raises serious doubts about the possibilities, although interactional justice and impression management research have shown that verbal explanations can dampen reactions to aversive behavior. Philosophical, anthropological, and ethological research all suggest that genuine forgiveness may require something more tangible and substantive than an explanation. Thus, the current experiment investigated the effects of explanations and varying forms of substantive amends on the restoration of mutual …

Professional Writing For A Natural Resources Policy Course, Jeff Edgens, Tom Greider

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Writing, there's no doubt, is important to anyone's career. Natural resource professionals, whether in agencies, nonprofits, academe, or in private practice have a need to express themselves in a cogent and succinct manner. In a “Natural Resource Policy” course students learn the skills of critical reasoning, conciseness, and editing with a variety of assignments that compel creativity and problem solving. Over the semester students write several letters to the editor, letters to a client, memoranda, opinion pieces worthy of the Wall Street Journal, and briefing papers of less than five pages. For each assignment, students identify a co-editor, someone who …

Testing Models Of Depression And Paranoia In Men And Women: The Role Of Cognitive Style, Guilt, Shame, And Defense Mechanisms, Chad Sombke May 2001

Testing Models Of Depression And Paranoia In Men And Women: The Role Of Cognitive Style, Guilt, Shame, And Defense Mechanisms, Chad Sombke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Gender differences in psychopathology have long been of interest in the fields of clinical, developmental, and personality psychology. Lewis proposed two models to explain the emergence of the development of gender differences in depression and paranoia. Lewis stated that gender differences in depression and paranoia can be traced to corresponding gender differences in cognitive style, guilt-proneness, shame-proneness, and the use of specific defense mechanisms. Although research evidence has validated certain components of these two models, neither model has ever been tested in its entirety. This research project intended to test Lewis's models in their entirety by utilizing structural equation modeling. …

The Use Of Therapeutic Rituals In Substance Abuse Treatment, Becky L. Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study explored the use of rituals in substance abuse counseling. Data were obtained from a total of 25 mental health workers in the substance abuse field from the northern region of Utah. Four research questions were asked about rituals and their use in substance abuse counseling: (1) Are addictions therapists using rituals? (2) How did therapists determine when to use rituals? (3) What types of rituals do they use? and (4) How do therapists assess ritual effectiveness? Results indicated that about three fourths of the mental health workers questioned were using rituals in their treatment protocol with substance abuse …

This thesis is an analysis of survey research data evaluating Journeys, a place-based environmental education teacher inservice training program developed and administered by Teton Science School. Information gleaned from stakeholder interviews was used to develop the specific evaluation questions. A self-administered mail survey was then sent to all teachers known to have received Journeys training.

Nearly all trained teachers go on to use Journeys with their classes, and show a commitment to making Journeys a permanent part of their classroom. Teachers generally agreed that their involvement with Journeys has had positive effects on their teaching behaviors and attitudes towards teaching. …

Religious Activity And Mortality In The Elderly: The Cache County Study, Andrea D. Hart May 2001

Religious Activity And Mortality In The Elderly: The Cache County Study, Andrea D. Hart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

No study, to date, has systematically examined the interplay of social contact, depression, functional disability, and cardiovascular health when examining the relation between religious activity and all -cause mortality. This study used Cox regression models as well as a series of structural equation models to elucidate these relations and resultant mortality over a 5-year period. This sample included 3,607 persons, age 65 and older, who participated in the Cache County Study on Memory in Aging, and who were not demented. Results indicate that when using Cox regression modeling, after controlling for other variables related to mortality, both religious activity and …

Female Adolescent Role Models And Body Image, Tracy L. Funk May 2001

Female Adolescent Role Models And Body Image, Tracy L. Funk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study primarily examined the relationship between role model choices and body image of female adolescents. More specifically this study sought to examine the relationship between the reasons that adolescent females give for choosing a role model and body image. Because body image dissatisfaction has been found to be associated with self-esteem and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa, these variables also were investigated. Body image was examined by using two measures of the body image construct· the Figure Rating Scale and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ). Both were used in order to capture a greater portion …

An Impact Study Of The Youth And Families With Promise Mentoring Program On Parent And Family Outcomes, Janet H. Cox May 2001

An Impact Study Of The Youth And Families With Promise Mentoring Program On Parent And Family Outcomes, Janet H. Cox

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined the effects of the Youth and Families with Promise mentoring program on family relationships; specifically, whether aspects of the youth's relationship with parents and siblings changed while he/she was involved in the mentoring program, and whether parent functioning and behavior became more effective and positive. Family systems theory and the social systems model of family stress provided the theoretical frameworks for the analysis.

Several aspects of the mentoring relationship were examined to understand their impact on family outcomes. These factors included the intensity of the mentoring experience, family involvement in program activities, and the unique aspects of …

Therapeutic Benefits Of A Wilderness Therapy Program And A Therapeutic Community Program For Troubled Adolescents, Kreg J. Edgmon May 2001

Therapeutic Benefits Of A Wilderness Therapy Program And A Therapeutic Community Program For Troubled Adolescents, Kreg J. Edgmon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wilderness therapy is increasingly seen as a viable treatment alternative for troubled youth, yet there is a noticeable dearth of research comparing the effectiveness of wilderness therapy with more traditional treatment programs. To help address this research need, this study conducted an exploratory analysis of the therapeutic benefits of a wilderness therapy program, Wilderness Quest (WQ), compared to a therapeutic community program, Life-Line (LL). The WQ and LL programs both are based on a 12- step recovery philosophy and emphasize the integral role of the family in adolescent treatment.

The study employed a qualitative methodology, beginning with an extended period …

Changing The Role Of Appraisal And Interpersonal Factors In Guilt Induction: Time, Perspective, And Responsibility, Chris Lee Treadwell May 2001

Changing The Role Of Appraisal And Interpersonal Factors In Guilt Induction: Time, Perspective, And Responsibility, Chris Lee Treadwell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Appraisal theories of emotion assert that guilt arises from the evaluations one ill makes about one's behavior. Perpetrators experience guilt when they view themselves as responsible for harm caused to their victims. Interpersonal theories of emotion hold that guilt is a function of relational factors, including the need to repair relationships. Theorists argue that guilty feelings often arise in spite of appraisals, and that perpetrators feel guilty because of a need to communicate reconciliatory messages to their victims. These two views of guilt are generally seen as mutually exclusive. This study proposed integrating both views of guilt into a single, …

The Effects Of Parental Modeling On The Health-Related Behaviors Of American Indian Adolescents: A Culturally Specific Investigation Of Social Learning Theory, Amy Jo Williams May 2001

The Effects Of Parental Modeling On The Health-Related Behaviors Of American Indian Adolescents: A Culturally Specific Investigation Of Social Learning Theory, Amy Jo Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Health-compromising behavior is a leading cause of death among American Indian (Al) adolescents. Examples of these behaviors include: smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use, and lack of seatbelt use. Theories that predict which Al youth are most at risk for executing these behaviors are needed.

Social learning theory (SL T) has shown adolescents' behaviors are sometimes highly correlated with their parents' behaviors across different ethnic groups. However, there has been little previous research done with Als.

The present study attempted to determine if SLT was applicable to Al adolescents and their parents with regard to four health-related behaviors: cigarette smoking, alcohol …

Non-Clinical Risk Factors Of Hysterectomy, Chung-Won Lee May 2001

Non-Clinical Risk Factors Of Hysterectomy, Chung-Won Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the United States, hysterectomy is one of the most commonly performed operations for women that is not related with pregnancy. However, not enough attention has been paid to how women's exposure to the surgery differs according to their social characteristics as well attitudinal/behavioral factors. Using cohort data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Mature Women, this study investigated two aspects: (1) the association between socioeconomic status and hysterectomy and (2) the impact of women's attitudinal/behavioral characteristics on hysterectomy. With Cox proportional hazards analyses, this study found that women's exposure to hysterectomy significantly differs according to their social and attitudinal …

Predicting Marital Discord And Depression In Early Head Start Mothers: A Step Toward Marriage And Family Therapy Collaboration, Wade Taylor May 2001

Predicting Marital Discord And Depression In Early Head Start Mothers: A Step Toward Marriage And Family Therapy Collaboration, Wade Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) recently sponsored Head Start-Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program partnerships. MFT programs can begin building similarly successful collaborative partnerships with Early Head Start (EHS) programs through using all or portions of this research study. This study has been dedicated to describing the occurrence, co-occurrence, and predictive characteristics of marital discord and depression in families served by EHS programs. This identification of at-risk families can then be used to bolster existing treatment efforts, develop new maritally based interventions, and facilitate increased referrals.

Marital discord and depression are two often interrelated problems EHS …

Spatial Perception And Integration Of The Interior And Exterior Environments, Eric Don Howard May 2001

Spatial Perception And Integration Of The Interior And Exterior Environments, Eric Don Howard

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

My course of study, which focused on spatial perception and integration of the interior and exterior environments, has fulfilled my expectations completely. The underlying premise of my personal design philosophy is the idea of integrating the man-made environment with the natural environment. I felt before I undertook this specialized coursework, and feel so even more now, that there is much to learn about the multitude of effects -- therapeutic, emotional, psychological and experiential, to name a few -- that designed spaces have on people.
