Color Coded Media: Portrayals Of Race In Newspaper Coverage National Hockey League Athletes, Camille E. Anderson Apr 2015

Color Coded Media: Portrayals Of Race In Newspaper Coverage National Hockey League Athletes, Camille E. Anderson

Student Research Symposium

Media representation of athletes may inform broader racial stereotypes. Examining the differences in journalists’ when describing both minority and non‐minority athletes within the NHL illustrates the ways in which this language contributes to readers’ constructions of race. The difference in the racial composition of the NHL presents a unique opportunity to examine how this difference affects the way in which minority athletes are portrayed in the mass media. Minority players are truly the minority in the NHL, whereas other professional sporting leagues could be considered minority-majority sports.

Urbanization, climate, and ecosystem change represent major challenges for managing water resources. Although water systems are complex, a need exists for a generalized representation of these systems to identify important components and linkages to guide scientific inquiry and aid water management. We developed an integrated Structure-Actor-Water framework (iSAW) to facilitate the understanding of and transitions to sustainable water systems. Our goal was to produce an interdisciplinary framework for water resources research that could address management challenges across scales (e.g., plot to region) and domains (e.g., water supply and quality, transitioning, and urban landscapes). The framework was designed to be generalizable …

Stability Of Children And Adolescents' Friendships: A Meta-Analytic Review, Diana J. Meter, Noel A. Card Mar 2015

Stability Of Children And Adolescents' Friendships: A Meta-Analytic Review, Diana J. Meter, Noel A. Card

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

Decades of research has assessed the benefits of children’s and adolescents’ friendships, but friendships among youth often dissolve within a matter of months or years. Studies have investigated predictors and consequences of friendship stability with the expectation that, in order for friendships to have a positive or negative influence on youth, they need to be enduring. However, differing methodology used to assess friendships affects the proportion of stable friendships observed, which may confound conclusions. In this meta-analysis a number of methodological and substantive study comparisons were made to assess their contribution to differences in effect sizes across studies of friendship …

The Digital Distribution Of Public Health News Surrounding The Human Papillomavirus Vaccination: A Longitudinal Infodemiology Study, L. Meghan Mahoney, Tang Tang, Kai Ji, Jessica Ulrich-Schad

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Background: New media changes the dissemination of public health information and misinformation. During a guest appearance on the Today Show, US Representative Michele Bachmann claimed that human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines could cause “mental retardation”. Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore how new media influences the type of public health information users access, as well as the impact to these platforms after a major controversy. Specifically, this study aims to examine the similarities and differences in the dissemination of news articles related to the HPV vaccination between Google News and Twitter, as well as how the content of …

Cognitive And Psychomotor Responses To High-Altitude Exposure In Sea Level And High-Altitude Residents Of Ecuador, John E. Davis, Dale R. Wagner, Nathan Garvin, David Moilanen, Jessica Thorington, Cory Schall Feb 2015

Cognitive And Psychomotor Responses To High-Altitude Exposure In Sea Level And High-Altitude Residents Of Ecuador, John E. Davis, Dale R. Wagner, Nathan Garvin, David Moilanen, Jessica Thorington, Cory Schall

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Background High-altitude inhabitants have cardiovascular and respiratory adaptations that are advantageous for high-altitude living, but they may have impaired cognitive function. This study evaluated the influence of altitude of residence on cognitive and psychomotor function upon acute exposure to very high altitude. Findings Ecuadorians (31 residing at 0–1,500 m [LOW], 78 from 1,501–3,000 m [MOD], and 23 living >3,000 m [HIGH]) were tested upon their arrival to a hut at 4,860 m on Mount Chimborazo. Cognitive/psychomotor measurements included a go-no-go test (responding to a non-visual stimulus), a verbal fluency test (verbalizing a series of words specific to a particular category), …

Tracing Temporal Changes In The Human Dimensions Of Forest Insect Disturbance On The Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, Hua Qin, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

A rapidly growing literature on the human dimensions of forest disturbance by insects has emerged over the past decade. As a result, the diverse social and economic impacts of forest disturbances and their implications have become increasingly understood. However, little research has assessed the temporal dynamics of community experience, perceptions, and actions related to changing forest landscapes and risks. Using longitudinal survey data from 2004 to 2008, this study examines the changing human dimensions of forest disturbance in the context of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula spruce bark beetle outbreak. Findings suggest ramifications of forest risks related to bark beetles were more …
