Approaches To Adult Probationary Supervision: A Positive Perspective, Douglas Wilson May 1981

Approaches To Adult Probationary Supervision: A Positive Perspective, Douglas Wilson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The field of probationary supervision today is marked by division and confusion. The probation officer who attempts to define the most effective approach to supervision is confronted with conflicting advice or, perhaps even worse, no advice at all. As Allen, Carlson, and Parks (1979) point out:

  • In summary, if we ask which caseload management strategies have been shown to be the more effective or efficient, we must answer that too little research has been done in this area to come to any definitive conclusion. (p. 67)

In spite of the lack of research to provide a "definitive conclusion," the literature …

Socio-Demographic And Economic Factors Affecting Fertility In Rural And Urban Thailand, Pichit Pitaktepsombati

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The major purpose of this study is to measure the relationship between socio-demographic and economic factors and fertility of rural and urban women in Thailand, utilizing national level survey data collected in 1972 and 1973. Specifically, a regression model of fertility and socio-demographic and economic variables will be developed and analyzed. Also, a general comparison will be made between the results of the present study, based on the 1972 and 1973 surveys, with those from an earlier round of surveys conducted in 1969 and 1970.

A Proposed Method Of Student Selection Using A Biographical Inventory As An Adjunctive Predictive Criterion, Jeffrey Scott Orme May 1980

A Proposed Method Of Student Selection Using A Biographical Inventory As An Adjunctive Predictive Criterion, Jeffrey Scott Orme

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper was to investigate whether or not the use of a biographical inventory would be a feasible and viable adjunctive means of making more accurate predictions of student success in programs of upper-division and graduate study in speech pathology and audiology. During the past years, biographical inventories have been found to be predictive of creativity, performance as a military officer, performance in varied occupations, and academic performance. It was hypothesized that a biographical inventory could be developed which, when used in conjunction with the existing academic predictors of Grade Point Average and Graduate Records Examination scores, …

Job Qualification And Activities Of Post Secondary Cooperative Education Coordinators In Utah, Carl L. Grunander May 1978

Job Qualification And Activities Of Post Secondary Cooperative Education Coordinators In Utah, Carl L. Grunander

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

"While a 1973 English major tends bar in a local nightspot, a social work graduate labors in a steel mill. A math major washes dishes in Florida, an education graduate works as a bank teller and a psychology major serves cocktails in Maine." (Jolly & Pierce, 1976, p . 2) . As these examples point out, there is a great need for our institutions of higher learning to be more responsive to the needs of the job market today.

For the past several years, colleges and universities have been criticized on the basis that they do not prepare young people …

Energy Development And Differential Migration Intentions Of High School Seniors In Rural Utah In 1975, Carole L. Seyfrit May 1977

Energy Development And Differential Migration Intentions Of High School Seniors In Rural Utah In 1975, Carole L. Seyfrit

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This analysis of the relationship between energy development and short and long-term migration intentions indicate that seniors in highly energy impacted counties are just as likely to intend to leave their counties as those in non-impacted counties. Furthermore, these findings apply to groupings of students based on father's occupation, student's educational aspirations, occupational aspirations, number of places lived, sex, and religion.

The findings were based on an analysis of survey data collected from about 900 1975 high school seniors in rural Utah. Level of energy impact was treated as a factor that might operate to increase economic opportunities and hold …

A Comparative Study Of Mmpi Variables And Their Relationship To Successful Alcoholic Rehabilitation, Verl G. Prestwich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was designed to determine whether the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory could successfully predict the outcome of rehabilitative treatment given 84 racially mixed male alcoholics having a mean age of 42.2 years who were admitted to the Wyoming State Hospital between September 1, 1965, and September 1, 1966. The subjects were given the MMPI before receiving 16 weeks of treatment consisting of education, group and individual psychotherapy, alcoholics anonymous, routine "ward treatment," disulfiram (antibuse), special ward unit, and special program without ward. After their release from hospital, the subjects were evaluated yearly for five years by relatives, employers, and …

Shoshoni Conceptualizations Of Plant Relationships, Bryan Ray Spykerman May 1977

Shoshoni Conceptualizations Of Plant Relationships, Bryan Ray Spykerman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Interviews were conducted with 10 Shoshoni-speaking people to investigate conceptualizations of plant relationships. A card-sort technique and informal questioning were employed in an attempt to elicit plant classifications and taxonomic relationships. Results indicate classifications are based on multiple criteria including morphology, cultural utilization, geographic setting and growth habit. A paradigm which postulates conceptualizations based on prototypic images fits the data better than the supposition that memory is composed of extensive taxonomic structures.

Telephone Crisis Intervention: Empathy And Conceptual Level, Paul J. Seymour May 1976

Telephone Crisis Intervention: Empathy And Conceptual Level, Paul J. Seymour

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The telephone crisis intervention service at Utah State University (Help-Line) was evaluated in order to make the training program accountable and to produce recommendations for improvement in volunteer training.

Help-Line training teaches a "non-directive" counseling model and incorporates experiential sensitivity type exercises, didactic discussion, and role playing.

Help-Line volunteers were assessed by two methods. The first was a pretest-posttest control group design. Training was the independent variable and the discrimination of core conditions (as measured by the Crisis Center Discrimination Index) and the communication of empathy (as measured by the Crisis Center Communication Index) were the dependent variables. The Indexes …

Strengths Enhancement Training: Self-Concept And Self-Actualization, Tony J. Strelich May 1976

Strengths Enhancement Training: Self-Concept And Self-Actualization, Tony J. Strelich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The strengths enhancement training program was developed and evaluated in order to determine empirically if a group method designed specifically to assist subjects in the identification of personal strengths, resources, and potentials, would be effective in broadening their perceptions of themselves in a positive direction.

The strengths enhancement training program was based primarily on the work of Herbert A. Otto, using the Multiple Strengths Perception method as the central component of the training program. That method was pilot tested, and program modifications were made on two occasions.

A pretest-posttest control group design was used to assess the 80 Introductory Psychology …
