Distance Collaboration: A Study Of Professional Conversations Between Isolated Church Education System Teachers, Zachary J. Cowan
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This qualitative research reports on the experience of eight single person faculty seminary teachers as they participated in four collaborative structured discussions with a colleague, while using distance technology. The structure of each discussion consisted of discussion of a selected talk or article, the giving and receiving of feedback on a lesson plan, and the discussion of other ideas, concerns, problems, and questions. Data was also gathered in an exit interview. Constant-comparative analysis was used to discover patterns and themes from observations notes and the exit interview. There are several implications from the data. The reason articles were selected for …

Treasure In Heaven: Economics And Christian Monasticism In Late Antiquity, Benjamin Wade Harman
Treasure In Heaven: Economics And Christian Monasticism In Late Antiquity, Benjamin Wade Harman
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In the 3rd century CE a new variety of Christian practice emerged to popularity that took a marked turn from traditional practice. It was an ascetic movement that led many people to deny themselves bodily pleasures, and even some to self-inflict pain. There were some who chose to live a solitary life in the desert or in caves, and others lived in monasteries or isolated on top of stone pillars. This movement encouraged individuals to sell all of their belongings and rely on others' charity, or even God's grace, to survive. While asceticism had previously existed in other cultures and …

“The Workingman Of Nazareth”: Representations Of Jesus As Laborer In The Masses (1911-1917), The Politics Of Jesus’ Profession, And Historical Jesus Debates, Michael Casey W. Woolf
Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies
From 1911-1917 a Socialist magazine called The Masses published art, essays, and poetry that aimed to support and foment class struggle in the United States. While their work was not primarily religious, from time to time authors chose to depict Jesus as an agent of class struggle. This paper focuses on these occasions, discussing how images of Jesus as union member and “workingman” are used to promote the magazine’s aims. Finally, this paper uses The Masses’ depictions of Jesus as a touchstone for analyzing some current debates within historical Jesus scholarship and argues for The Masses’ Jesus to be taken …
Symbolism In Asian Statues Of The Buddha, Cristina Richie
Symbolism In Asian Statues Of The Buddha, Cristina Richie
Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies
Any medium of art can have ether a literal or a symbolic function; iconography is the study of both. In statues of Siddhartha Gautama is a correspondence between parts of the body and the items surrounding the Buddha to a deeper meaning that the artist is aware of, and intend the devotee to understand. Once these aspects of Buddhist art are elucidated, additional insight into the adoration and following of the way of Buddha can be more readily practiced.
This paper will examine the visual themes in Asian statues of the Buddha, including the head and parts of the head, …
On The Development Of Spinoza’S Account Of Human Religion, James Simkins
On The Development Of Spinoza’S Account Of Human Religion, James Simkins
Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies
This paper provides a narrative account of the development of Spinoza's view of human religion in terms of historical influences in Spinoza's life. Spinoza embraced a position in which the majority of religious beliefs are reduced to anthropological phenomena on naturalistic grounds. However, certain rationally grounded religious beliefs are defended as objectively valid. This paper seeks to demonstrate that the philosophical substance of Spinoza's position was derived from the philosophical work of Maimonides and Hobbes. However, the impetus behind the radical conclusions which Spinoza drew came from the atmosphere of early modern Amsterdam. It is through a novel synthesis of …
Revisiting Joseph Campbell’S The Power Of Myth, Daniel Gorman Jr.
Revisiting Joseph Campbell’S The Power Of Myth, Daniel Gorman Jr.
Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies
This paper considers the relevance of The Power of Myth to the secular study of religion. First, I identify the scholars from whom Campbell borrows concepts. I organize these scholars into three groups – the qualitative religious scholars, the quantitative religious scholars, and those who draw from both approaches. Next, I identify Joseph Campbell’s key ideas (the monomyth, the hero’s journey, the existence of a higher power or energy, the lack of myth in the modern world, and the notion that religion possesses given qualities). I then analyze the contradictions inherent within Campbell’s argument, for Campbell fails to synthesize three …
