Circular No. 62 - Summary Of Publications
Circular No. 62 - Summary Of Publications
UAES Circulars
Circular No. 62 contains a summary of publications of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station issued since September 1925. The publications of this Station are no longer sent to a general mailing list (except in the case of libraries), but are sent. only on request. Therefore, copies of any of the publications listed will be sent without charge to those requesting them as long as the supply is available. However, in the case of abstracts of scientific and technical papers the supply is very limited and the requests for these should therefore be limited as far as possible only to those …
Grazing Periods And Forage Production On The National Forests, Arthur W. Sampson, Harry E. Malmsten
Grazing Periods And Forage Production On The National Forests, Arthur W. Sampson, Harry E. Malmsten
Aspen Bibliography
Stockmen in the West have always had confidence in the adequacy of the native forage crop to provide pasturage for their livestock. Indeed, under normal climatic conditions this enormous natural resource has not failed the grazier, except where it has been called upon to meet unreasonable demands. The productivity of the range has declined sharply, however, wherever the requirements of plant growth have been disregarded for many years in succession. Where there has been too early or too frequent and to heavy grazing, undue trampling, or some other unsatisfactory feature of range use, the results have been uniformly bad. Many …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the summer of 1923 the writer was a mamber of a class directed by Dr E. A. Gaw in the study of Vocational Education. Among the experiments conducted with the class was one for musical sensory discrimination for which the five discs arranged by one, Professor Carl E. Seashore of Iowa University, were used.

Bulletin No. 197 - The Pear Leaf Blister Mite As An Apple Pest, I. M. Hawley
UAES Bulletins
The blister mite is a pest of foreign origin, that has been in the United States for many years. It was introduced into this country, probably from Europe, sometime before 1872, and by 1894 it was rather general in its distribution thruout the United States and Canada. At the present time this mite is a serious pest of apples in many of the fruit-growing sections of Western America. The blister mite was first reported in Utah by Hedrick as early as 1898. During the last few years it has been abnormally abundant in some parts of Utah.

Bulletin No. 196 - The Fruit Tree Leaf Roller And Its Control By Oil Sprays, I. M. Hawley
UAES Bulletins
When the fruit tree leaf roller is present in large numbers in an apple orchard it i the most destructive apple insect in the state. Fortunately, it is not a pest of general occurrence. Tho this insect is known to occur from Cache Valley south to Beaver, serious losses from its ravages have been restricted to occasional orchards within the infested territory.

The Evaluation Of The Dairy Cow, George Gardner
The Evaluation Of The Dairy Cow, George Gardner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The accurate appraisal of property is in a great many cases a difficult task. A savings account in a bank may be evaluated with high precision. A business building in a large city may bring in returns sufficiently steady and permanent so that a careful appraiser with a reasonable knowledge of depreciation losses to be anticipated might fix a value without very much error.

Bulletin No. 195 - Field Studies Of Sugar-Beet Nematode, George Stewart, A. H. Bateman
Bulletin No. 195 - Field Studies Of Sugar-Beet Nematode, George Stewart, A. H. Bateman
UAES Bulletins
The sugar-beet nematode has now become of importance in Utah. It occurs in spots in practically all of the older beet-growing districts and in a few parts of the state in much larger areas. The intensity of infestation varies from mere traces to nearly complete occupation. One of the areas of severe infestation in Utah on a large area is in the Lewiston district, of northern Cache Valley. The survey here reported was undertaken in order to find the extent of nematode infestation in Cache Valley and the possibility of its control by ordinary cultural practices.
Correlated Inheritance In Wheat, George Stewart
Correlated Inheritance In Wheat, George Stewart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Since the rediscovery of Mendel's law in 1900, there have been many studies of inheritance in wheat. Of these rather numerous investigations, however, only a few have consisted of correlated studies of various characters on the same plant.
Inheritance of awns and of spike density have received some attention but the studies have hardly more than indicated the problem. Both have been thought by some to be rather simple in their inheritance, and in some crosses without doubt such is the case, but lately there has come a recognition of considerable complexity.
Density. As here used, "density" refers to …
The Effect Of Alternate Freezing And Thawing On Impermeable Alfalfa And Dodder Seeds, A. R. Midgley
The Effect Of Alternate Freezing And Thawing On Impermeable Alfalfa And Dodder Seeds, A. R. Midgley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is surprising to know the small amount of work that has been done on alternate freezing and thawing of seeds. Many experiments, however, have been conducted to see the effect of very low temperatures on seeds and to notice the effect it had on their vitality. Some experimenters subjected seeds to temperatures as low as liquid hydrogen with very interesting results but in very few cases, if any, was the effect of alternate freezing and thawing studied.
The work that follows deals directly with the effects of alternate freezing and thawing on impermeable seeds of alfalfa and of dodder. …
Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed
Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. Most of our plant breeders however, have been too busy working on experiments with single characters and have given little or …

Circular No. 60 - Seed-Potato Treatment: For The Control Of Four Common Diseases Rhizoctonia, Scab, Blackleg, Dry-Rot, B. L. Richards
UAES Circulars
Potato diseases are a constant menace to the Utah potato crop. During the 4-year period from 1920 to 1924 losses sustained from disease averaged 19.5 per cent, or approximately one-fifth of the entire state crop. This means that every year a large percentage of the seed planted is useless and that one-fifth of every acre planted to potatoes is wasted. Again, labor in the way of planting and in cultivation is used to poor advantage, and finally the grower suffers a direct financial loss which frequently eats up his expected profit.

Circular No. 59 - Control Of Stinking Smut Of Wheat With Copper Carbonate, B. L. Richards, A. F. Bracken
UAES Circulars
Stinking smut or bunt of wheat is an ever-present and destructive disease in the wheat fields of Utah. During the past season (1925) this disease was especially prevalent, causing losses in certain fields of from 25 to 50 per cent, not counting the loss to the grower in reduced grade of grain. In the threshing of smutty wheat there is also the risk of loss from smut explosion. Almost every season cases of this sort are reported. In addition of all of the wheat tested by the U. S. Grain Inspector at Logan for Northern Utah and Southern Idaho 30 …
